July, 2003 ... a young fellow of 11 left his Scarborough home and stepped aboard the "British Volunteer", a sailing vessel of 140 tons, then berthed in the harbour, to begin a life-time's association with ships and shipping between the East Coast of England and the Baltic ports - an association, moreover, which was to continue through succeeding generations down to the present day, when John Good & Sons Ltd., still maintain the connections established by that youngster, John Good, 186 years a go. John Good's seven years' apprenticeship began with a voyage in convoy to St. Petersburg. For 20 years thereafter, he sailed in vessels trading to the Baltic, White Sea and Mediterranean ports, gaining a Master's Certificate. In the picturesque language of his calling, he "swallowed the anchor" in 1833. His retirement from the sea, however, was not to be an end of his association with shipping and the Baltic. In 1833, John Good moved with his wife to Hull and established a Ship-Chandler's business, where several difficult years were spent in building up connections with the local shipowners and with the Dutch, Greek, Scandinavian and Finnish vessels trading into the Humber port. It was not long before John Good owned shares in several ships. In addition, he bought his own vessel, the schooner "Bothnia", which was lost on a voyage from Fowey to Antwerp. He also became the owner of a new brig which was lost in a storm near the Azores en route for the West Indies. Despite these misfortunes, which were, after all, the common lot of shipowners of that day, John Good was able to consider himself a soundly established merchant by 1853. Much of his early success was due to the connections he had built up with the Baltic, particularly Finland. He faced a serious setback in the Crimean War when the British bombarded the harbours and shipyards of Finland, which was then an ally of the Russians. Fortunately, the end of the Crimean War brought a resumption of the suspended business with Finland and orders began to flow back from the Finns to their old associate in Hull. In 1864, John Good retired from the business. Although he devoted a great deal of his working life to the Finnish people, this did not absorb the whole of his interests outside his business. He was, after all, a sea-faring man, and he never forgot it. Efforts to improve safety at sea won his full support and he was, himself, the inventor of a handy portable rocket apparatus to be carried aboard ships. John Good died in 1876. When John Good retired in 1864, his sons, Joseph and Thomas, trading as John Good & Sons continued the business. The brothers, in conjunction with Francis and James Reckitt, established the firm of Good Brothers & Co., as shipowners. They bought in 1870, a screw steamer, the "Carolina", of 733 tons, and in the following year the "Mont Cenis". The "Carolina" foundered in the North Atlantic in 1872 while bound from Boston to Bristol with a cargo of wheat. The "Mont Cenis" was also seriously damaged on the North Atlantic while carrying general cargo from New York to the United Kingdom, losing her Master, the ship eventually made Portsmouth with difficulty. She was later sold. S.S "CAROLINA", 1278 GRT, owned by Good Brothers & Co. (1870-1872) a partnership of Joseph & Thomas Good, and Francis & James Reckitt. The vessel was purchased to carry mails to the Cape but later traded to the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic. She was lost in Novemeber 1872 on passage from Boston, Mass. to Bristol, but fortunately all the crew were rescued. Painting of original by Peter Whittock, 1987. In the early 1870's, John Good & Sons, became agents for a number of Finnish owners trading to Hull, Newcastle and Middlesborough, beginning an association with Finland, which is still maintained. The original Finnish owners largely merged into the Finland Steamship Company, who entered the Hull-Finland trade on a regular basis in 1883 for which John Good & Sons were appointed agents. In 1908 the company was incorporated as a limited liability company, under the title of John Good & Sons Limited, in which the first directors were the sons of the founder and his four grandsons. From then on, the story is one of continual development as, in addition to the association with Finnish trade, the firm developed substantial connections as coal exporters, among their most important customers being the Finnish and Italian State Railways. To further this branch of the business, the firm became appreciable operators in the time charter market, and at one time had as many as 28 vessels flying their houseflag. The First World War brought business almost to a standstill and post-war conditions put an end to coal exporting. The Company concentrated upon liner agencies and warehousing. After the Second World War, all the pre-war agencies resumed and further liner agencies were obtained. In addition, the Company continued its activities with Agency work, handling tankers, timber and a wide range of miscellaneous cargoes. The Company extended their warehousing projects and developed forwarding and transport interests, which were complimentary to the regular liner trades. A further milestone was achieved in 1950, when John Good & Sons were invited to attend to the London business of one of the Principals for whom they already acted in Hull. The London Office has also expanded in the ensuing years, with the addition of other agencies. In 1959, in association with other shipping friends, John Good & Sons opened a subsidiary company in Ipswich, General Cargo Brokers (Mercia) Litd., which was largely responsible for introducing general cargo trades between the port of Ipswich and Continental and Baltic Ports. This company is now re-named John Good & Sons (G.C.B.) Ltd., and is a wholly-owned subsidiary. All the shipping offices now trade within the John Good & Sons (Shipping) Ltd., Group. Since then several other offices have been opened throughout the U.K. making the company one of the few nationally-based independent shipping agents remaining today. For today, 162 years after John Good established his ship-chandlery business in Hull, the company remains a family business covering five generations. Over the last 162 years we have taken pride in our reputation which could not have been achieved without the confidence of our many Principals and the loyal co-operation and endeavours of every member of staff - past and present.
