Reederei Claus-Peter Offen was established 1971 in Hamburg. On the 9th of June 1971, the first vessel was acquired at an auction at the district court in Hamburg. The vessel was the "Annie Hugo Stinnes", a small general cargo liner of 4.000 tdw and built in 1959. She was renamed the "Holstein". During the following years a number of second hand vessels were added to the fleet which, by 1978 had grown to 12 general cargo liners of up to 14.000 tdw. In 1978, the company ordered a series of six semi container vessels of 12.000 tdw / 576 teu each at Seebeckwerft AG in Bremerhaven. This was the start of the foundation of an important fleet of container vessels. More and larger vessels have been built since at Flender Werft AG, Lubeck, Thyssen Nordseewerke GmbH, Emden and Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Seoul. After completing a 19 ship newbuilding program at the end of 2002, the actual fleet consist of 44 vessels with totally 1.6 m. tdw or about 120.000 teu capacity. With an average age of about 4 years, it is a highly modern fleet. The Offen-group has become one of the largest suppliers world wide of charter tonnage for the container market. Since the beginning of 2003 orders for 27 containerships of up to 101.000 dwt respectively 8.000 teu and a length of up to 334 meters were ordered at Samsung Heavy Industries Co., LTD.; Hanjin Heavy Industries Co., LTD. and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., LTD. of Korea. To date the total volume of the newbuilding contracts comes to 2.320.000 dwt or 188.000 teu. All ships will be delivered between 2005 and 2007. Including the newbuildings the CPO fleet will stand at 71 units with a capacity of abt 3.9 m. dwt respectively 308.000 teu at the end of 2007. The company employs 1.400 people out of which 50 are working at the office in the city of Hamburg. The modern office of Reederei Claus-Peter Offen, with its maritime flair, are located in the center of the city of Hamburg. The "Kaufmannshaus" can be found on the junction between the streets "Gro?e Bleichen" and "Neuer Wall" - Bleichenbrucke No. 10. Built in 1907, it is one of the largest merchant houses built in Hamburg. Reederei C.-P. Offen has been residing on the 3rd floor of this representative building since 1995 on a office area of now 1,700 square metres.
