The initial success of the Company was due to the fact that its foundation and development coincided with the growing use of steam for ship propulsion. The Company rapidly expanded along the Brazilian coast, culminating with the establishment of a head office in London in 1845. With the authorisation of the company to operate under the laws of the Brazilian Empire officially approved by imperial letter in May, 1878, the head office of the Company was established in Rio de Janeiro, at that time the capital of Brazil.
