e hand and BP, Unocal and Statoil on the other hand." Michael Hackenbruch, Manager Social Responsibility added "It is particularly pleasing to see that this project supports a range of activities that are supported by IFC and GTZ in the private sector which is a key focus of our social investment activities. This project will be a first step in a series of support activities that will strengthen the private sector and SMEs in particular." Good governance Our last key theme is good governance. This aims at improving administrative capacity and transparency with particular interest in issues like revenue management, civil society development and domestic energy. As for institution building and the development of civil society we have funded training for local media, and we have also sponsored a number of projects that are working closely with national NGOs. As part of good governance theme we support building the institutional and organisational capacities of competent and professional national NGOs, serving mutual interests of the society and the company. Society will benefit, since the capacity building effort will support the strengthening of the NGO sector and civil society in the country. BP will benefit by strengthening NGOs ability to assist us in delivering our community and social investment programmes. We will continue to focus on helping the local media have a better understanding of western business standards, policies and procedures through our training programmes and workshops. These are also aimed at helping the media raise their own standards and supporting them in their efforts to become a more visible component of the civil society. If we put the figures together, we and our partners in the various projects that we are running in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey expect to spend more than $30 million on social investment during the four-year period 2003-2006. Allocation of the funds on the individual projects is as follows: BTC - all three countries; SCP Azerbaijan and Georgia, and ACG and Shah Deniz Azerbaijan. We are currently involved in intensive discussions with multi-lateral and bi-lateral agencies to decide what we are going to do beyond 2006 and from there over the next ten or twenty years. Our main business stream activities are Chemicals and Lubricants Chemicals The most established activity in the country exists within our Chemicals business in the form of the three joint venture chemical companies that have been formed with the Samsung Group. These are: Samsung Petrochemical Company (SPC): SPC is a joint venture company that was formed in 1974 to produce PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid). The company was first established with a partnership between Amoco (35%), Mitsui Chemical (15%) and Samsung (50%). In March 2003, the share holdings were revised and coupled with Mitsui exiting the venture, the present shareholdings are now 47.4% (BP), 47.4% (Samsung) and 5.2% (Shinsegae). The initial plant capacity of 130,000 metric tons started production in 1979 at a site located in the Ulsan Petrochemical Complex. The company has since expanded to two sites (Ulsan and Seosan) with a total production capacity of 1,800,000 metric tons and employs 314 people. Samsung BP (SSBP) Samsung-BP Chemicals Co., Ltd. ( SSBP ) is a joint venture between BP (51%) and Samsung (49%). SSBP was incorporated in Korea on July 13, 1989 to produce and sell acetic acid in Korea with exports to the Asia Pacific region. The facility is located at a chemical complex in Ulsan, Korea. The initial production capacity was 150,000 metric tons per annum and came into commercial operation in late 1991. The current capacity is 430,000 metric tons per annum and the company employed 170 employees. Asian Acetyls Co. Ltd. Castrol lubricants are marketed in Bangladesh through an authorized distributor, Ben-Lub (Pte) Limited. Castrol lubricants are sold through high street outlets and directly to commercial and industrial customers. In 1997 BP signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Meghna Petroleum Ltd. to study the feasibility of establishing a Joint Venture lubricants' manufacturing and marketing company in the Country and to study the LPG market. To fulfil the obligations of the MoU, BP established a Liaison Office in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1998. The office has seven employees, headed by an expatriate, and reports into BP Middle East, Dubai. The company is a part of the BP group and is managed by BP Africa Limited, which provides financial, technical and physical support services. It obtains its supplies of petroleum products by rail from the South African Petroleum Refineries (Sapref) and from the lubricating oil manufacturing plant (Blendcor) both in Durban. Storage and distribution from Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, is carried out from a depot shared with Caltex. Five depots situated in South Africa at various points along the Lesotho border undertake deliveries. The petroleum market in Lesotho follows the pattern set by South Africa and is partially government-regulated. Wholesale prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin are price-controlled. The oil industry s wholesale profit margin on petrol is set by government, as is that of the retailers. A Rationalization Plan restricts the number of stations that may be erected during a given period. BP Lesotho is strong in the retail market, which contributes greatly to its position of overall industry leader in the country. Substantial investment is spent annually on improving the network. There are 15 fully-fledged BP service stations and ten general dealer resellers. Retail sales contribute 70% of overall profits and have been increasing annually at a rate of 4%. Currently our operations are focused on chemicals production but they also include lubricants blending and marketing, as well supplying products for the marine and aviation markets. We market products under both the BP and Castrol brand names. BP Belgium has three chemicals factories in Belgium: Our plant at Geel has a total annual production of approximately 2 million tonnes and the main products produced at this factory are PTA , the raw material for PET bottles, and polypropylene. This factory employs 560 staff. Our plant at Feluy has a total annual production of approximately 400,000 tonnes, manufactures mainly linear alphaolefins, poly alphaolefins and aluminium alkyls and employs 290 staff. In 2001, BP acquired the polyproylene activities from Solvay, which led to the acquisition of the Lillo plant and a chemicals research center in Neder-over-Heembeek employing a staff of 35. Our plant at Lillo has a total annual production of approximately 130,000 tonnes and employs 45 staff. We also have a chemicals joint venture with Solvay, BP Solvay, employing some 200 staff in Lillo and Neder-over-Heembeek, for the production of High Density Polyethylene. Our Refining and Marketing (Downstream) business comprises two blending plants: The first is located at Ghent producing lubricants for the inland market and employing 120 people. Core business there is oil and gas exploration and production, and is conducted through a number of partnerships: Empresa Petrolera Chaco S.A. Through its interest in Pan American Energy, BP owns 30% of Empresa Petrolera Chaco, a joint venture (JV) company, whose other principal shareholders are the Bolivian population, represented by BBVA and Futuro de Bolivia pension funds. It is one of the key players in the country's Exploration and Production (Upstream) gas business and a major Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and gas supplier. Chaco was formed in 1997 as a result of the capitalization of the Bolivian state-owned petroleum company (YPFB) and is dedicated to the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. Chaco is one of the most important Bolivian producers. In mid 2000, Chaco fulfilled its investment commitment of $US 307 million, five years before the date established by the Bolivian government. Chaco carries out its exploration and development activities over an approximate area of 730,000 hectares. It has four exploration blocks, two associated blocks, and nine production fields. The most important exploration blocks are Aguarague (in the southern part of the country) and Chimor (in Cochabamba). Chaco's primary production fields are: Carrasco (Cochabamba), Patujusal and Los Cusis (Santa Cruz) and Vuelta Grande (Chuquisaca). Caipipendi Pan American Energy (60% BP) holds a 25% stake in the Caipipendi block in Tarija, together with British Gas (37.5%) and Repsol (37.5%). The block contains the Margarita discovery which has certified reserves of 13 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas. Air BP Air BP was awarded airport assets and aviation fuelling business through a competitive privatization process in September of 2000. They operate refueling facilities at Bolivia's 15 airports, which handle around 39 million US gallons per year. Air BP has exclusive marketing rights in Bolivia until the year 2022. To date, Air BP has invested over 3.2 million dollars in airport capital improvement projects, as well as more than 1.2 million dollars in newer fuelling vehicles and equipment. back to top Employees BP directly employs 10 employees in the country - 3 in Chaco and 7 in Air BP. Chaco has 231 employees in Bolivia. back to top Social investment and community initiatives One of BP's most important contributions to Bolivia has been the financial support provided in expanding the Noel Kempff National Park. Chaco S.A. initiates yearly community outreach programmes. In 2002, the main activities were the sponsorship of the Baroque Music Festival and a programme to teach household safety to elementary students. This programme reached 1,000,000 households - relaying educational messages on television broadcasts. At the same time, presentations were made to over 15,000 children between the ages of 6-10, a number that should increase as the programme continues. Chaco also donated close to two tonnes of medicine and supplies in Bolivia as well as sponsoring a variety of other events, such as the local Special Olympics. Chaco carries out socio-economic studies in all communities close to their production and exploration activities. An integral part of these studies are open dialogue workshops so that the communities are kept informed of: Chaco's activities or projects The longer term benefits of these activities for the community The underlying policies of Chaco's social investment These meetings also help Chaco's employees understand local needs and requests for assistance. Projects are then prioritized in collaboration with the communities; a budget designated and detailed plans arranged to complete for the projects that Chaco will finances. Since 1997 Chaco has contributed approximately $US760, 000 in social investment projects to improve education, health, and basic infrastructure that will encourage development in the area. Chaco's investment plans have had a positive impact on the communities by improving the quality of life. Because of the participation and agreement of the communities concerned, the programmes are designed to be sustainable. In 2002 the emphasis of Chaco's social investment planning will be in the area of education. back to top In this section Contact BP in Bolivia Related downloads BP Sustainability Review 2004 Spanish language version , pdf , 1720KB back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/About BP/Malawi Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global About BP Where we operate BP worldwide Malawi Malawi BP has been operating in Malawi since 1976. Initially this was through a minority shareholding interest in a local company - Oilcom (the Oil Company of Malawi). However in 1999, BP acquired a further 30% shareholding from the other Oilcom shareholder, Press Corporation, to increase its shareholding in the company to 50%. As a result, all Oilcom retail sites are being re-branded to BP. Oilcom has always been the market leader of the four companies operating in Malawi, commanding about 50% of the market share (1999). The other industry players are ExxonMobil (30%), Caltex (13%) and Total (7%). A new addition to the market is Petroda. Pricing of fuels is still under government control. There is, however, a general pricing structure that has been agreed between the government and the oil industry in Malawi. There has also been partial liberalization in the industry as far as product procurement is concerned. A government body, the Petroleum Control Commission (PCC), carried out all fuel imports until May 2000. Today, 80% of the country's fuel is imported by Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL), a private company owned by the oil companies in Malawi and managed through a body of directors drawn from each oil company. The remaining 20% is still being imported by PCC. Malawi obtains most of its lubricants from the BPSMS blending plant at Willowvale, Zimbabwe, with a small quantity coming from BP Southern Africa. Pricing and procurement of lubricants are fully liberalized. Oilcom Malawi is the sole importer and supplier of aviation fuels in the country. Malawi has an agro-based economy, which forms the bulk of Oilcom's customers. Tourism is an important source of revenue and one of the country's highlights is Lake Malawi, which is 52 miles wide and 365 miles long. Oilcom is the only oil company with a network of service stations stretching from one end of the lakeshore road to the other. Over the last 38 years, BP has established an excellent base in Malaysia. Since it started operating, BP has grown to include a group of wholly owned, joint venture and subsidiary companies engaged in the full spectrum of activities in the petroleum, chemicals, solar and exploration industries. BP's years in Malaysia have been marked by significant developments, which have paralleled the country's own growth and progress. From a modest beginning as a small petroleum marketing operation, the company has established a strong presence with a network of 270 service stations, backed by two modern fuel terminals, five oil depots, two fully automated LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) bottling plants and an ISO 9002 certified lubricant blending plant. BP has also taken a major stake in petrochemical industry with investments in three joint venture operations in Kertih, Terengganu and one wholly owned manufacturing plant in Kuantan, Pahang on the East coast. The polyethylene plant, which employs the BP Chemicals Innovene process, and ethylene plants were commissioned in 1995 and has the flexibility to produce a full range of high, medium and linear low-density polyethylene to meet the needs of the local and overseas plastic fabrication industries. In September 1997, BP announced a further petrochemical investment in an acetic acid plant in Kertih which commenced operations in late 2000. The Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) plant in Kuantan was incorporated in 1993 and started up in 1995. Following the acquisitions of Arco, BP is also now involved in upstream partnership with Petronas through the development of the CTOC project in the Malaysian/Thailand joint development area. The total BP investments in these developments including partner shares amounts to US$2.5 billion making it the largest British investor in Malaysia. back to top Employees BP's share of the capital invested is US$1.4 billion and it employs over 1,200 people, close to 98% of who are nationals. BP's continued focus on world-class safety standards has also been recognized by the Malaysian Industry with BP Malaysia being the only company to receive the Grand Award from the Malaysian Society of Occupational Safety & Health in 1997. In addition, Ethylene Malaysia and Amoco Chemicals Malaysia received an HSE award for their safety achievements in 1998 and 1999 respectively. With the setting up of the BP Solar manufacturing plant in 2000 in Kuala Lumpur, BP is expected to play a significant role in bringing energy to the remote rural areas of Malaysia. back to top Social investment and community initiatives BP is committed to raising awareness of Malaysia's environmental heritage. Together with the people of Malaysia we will strive to educate and support the community in which we operate to protect the environment and enrich the quality of life. The projects, which aim to inculcate environmental awareness and promote science education amongst young Malaysians, depend heavily on involvement of BP's own staff. They work closely with partners from Government and NGOs in the planning and implementation stages. back to top Business Council for Sustainable Development in Malaysia The Business Council for Sustainable Development in Malaysia (BCSDM) was registered as a non-profit organization in 1992 to support the Government's Environmental Policy through a business community committed to environmental care. BCSDM acts as the catalyst for sustaining environmental conservation and economic growth in Malaysia and is the main link between Government, Business community and the society. BP has a direct continuous involvement as a Vice President of the Council and has in the past seconded a staff to be the Executive Director of the body. back to top Turtle conservation BP in collaboration with the Worldwide Fund for Nature Malaysia (WWF Malaysia) runs an education programme in which camps are held to stimulate conservation awareness (particularly about turtles) among children. This project, which began in 1999, forms part of a wider programme, which targets fishermen, and other members of the local community. back to top Plastics waste management BP is an active member of the Plastics Waste Management Task Force set up to instill awareness about proper waste management including plastics recycling amongst the public. Apart from organizing educational campaigns in schools and workshops on proper waste management, the Task Force has also produced coding symbols to assist segregation of plastic items for re-use and recycling. back to top Student mentoring The Student Mentoring Programme is a win-win project to raise the educational aspirations of young people in science-based subjects and those who will eventually pursue a career in science. At the national level, the project, jointly managed by University Malaya and International Islamic University, hopes to boost enrolment in science and technology courses at the local universities, to meet the requirements of Wawasan 2020. back to top Biodiversity conservation programme Biodiversity is now a dominant theme in the global conservation movement but not many Malaysians have heard of this word let alone grasp the concept. As one of the largest British investors in Malaysia, one of the twelve mega diverse countries in the world, we felt that we should initiate a programme to raise awareness about biodiversity. Recognising that we are not a biodiversity specialist, we invited key biodiversity players from government, universities and NGOs to form a Steering Group. This unique partnership, initiated by BP in early 2000 decided to initiate a programme which would impress upon Malaysians the importance of managing and conserving our biodiversity and the critical need to have trained professionals in this field to ensure proper management and conservation. Two workshops have been held to do this and the partnership is confident that the programme will contribute to capacity building in biodiversity in line with the country's emphasis on sustainable development as stated in the 8th Malaysia Plan and the Outline Perspective Plan III. back to top Ma'Daerah Turtle Sanctuary Centre At least 70% of turtles in Malaysia are found in the state of Terengganu where three of BP's petrochemical joint-venture plants are located. BP Petronas Acetyls (BPPA) is involved in protecting these endangered species by establishing and managing the Ma'Daerah Turtle Sanctuary in partnership with the Department of Fisheries and WWF Malaysia. The sanctuary is an exceptional example of the company and staff working with Government, NGOs and the community to enhance BP's reputation through promoting conservation, education and active community involvement. It ties in with an education programme that BP already runs in Malaysia in co-operation with WWF Malaysia in which camps are held to stimulate conservation awareness (particularly about turtles) among children. The goal for the Sanctuary is To create a Centre which will be a model for turtle conservation and management and the first involving joint participation from government, private sector and a non-governmental organisation'. The objectives of the sanctuary are: to increase protection for turtle eggs; improve monitoring & recording of number of nesting turtles; instill awareness in the local communities of the need to conserve the marine turtles and terrapins; upgrade ecological status of area; develop a model turtle sanctuary for the East Coast; establish partnerships with local consortiums and government bodies in turtle conservation initiatives Four different programmes are being implemented - Weekender Camps, Adopt-a-Nest Scheme, Adopt-a-Turtle Scheme and Educational Camps for Kids. The Weekender Camp is a two-day camp targeting families who would like a short break from city life camping in an area of outstanding natural beauty while at the same time assisting sanctuary staff to help monitor turtle landings; collect, transfer and re-bury turtle eggs at a hatchery and release turtle hatchlings. The weekend camps are part of the education and awareness programmes enabling both Malaysians and foreigners to be involved in turtle conservation work in Terengganu. It is also be a source of revenue for the Sanctuary and the turtle conservation programme, in line with the long-term plan that the sanctuary would be self-sufficient financially. The educational camps are sponsored by BP and targeted at local schoolchildren to raise awareness about the critical need to conserve turtles. The Adopt-a-Nest and Adopt-a-Turtle are special programmes allowing people to become "parents either to a nest of turtle eggs or a turtle. It is hoped that this will inculcate understanding of the threats faced by turtles and provide the opportunity to the public to participate meaningfully in the conservation efforts besides generating revenue for the sustainable management of Ma'Daerah turtles. back to top Sea Ocean Underwater Life for Underprivileged Kids (SOULkids) BP Malaysia organized and sponsored the environmentally based community programme involving youth volunteers and underprivileged children. The programme advocates learning through having fun, aimed to give underprivileged children the opportunity of a lifetime experience to learn and create an awareness of the marine environment particularly ocean, coral reefs and turtle conservation, swamps and wetland habitats, and the ecosystem's interdependencies. It also allows caring Malaysian youths, willing to contribute their time and energy, to assist the underprivileged in the community. The Minister of Youth and Sports agreed to be the programme Patron and lauded BP for their contribution towards instilling environmental awareness in young people who will be leaders of tomorrow. back to top Project Ehsan Project Ehsan is an annual charitable effort undertaken by BP's 5 business units for the less fortunate during the festive season. Each unit contributes cash or kind to a deserving organization during Christmas, Deepavali, Chinese New Year or Hari Raya Puasa. Past recipients included orphanages, old folk homes, hospitals and the like. Fuels BU has to-date built three homes for three less fortunate families. back to top Love your environment Primary school children are educated on turtles and the threats to their existence and educational quizzes to test and reinforce learning. This includes visits to the turtle sanctuary at Cherating, Pahang and they are given leaflets and posters to take home and share with their classmates who are unable to join the programme. Community members, local government and authorities together with BP employees participate yearly in cleaning the area around the Tunggak River near the ACM plant. Trees are planted, fish released into the river and the public area upgraded and beautified. back to top In this section Contact BP in Malaysia back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/About BP/Sweden Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global About BP Where we operate BP worldwide Sweden Sweden BP has been operating in Sweden since 1927 and operates under the BP and Castrol brands. Although BP Botswana operates in one of the most highly competitive petroleum product markets in the BP Oil Africa region, it supplies more than one quarter of the country s petroleum products. Three market segments - government, mining and private vehicle operators - together account for about 80% of the market. The balance is primarily driven by the construction sector. Jwaneng Mine, owned jointly by the government and De Beers, singly produces more diamonds than the whole of South Africa and is supplied by BP Botswana. BP Botswana is supplied with refined and blended product by road and rail from BP's refinery in Durban (Sapref), the lubricants blending plant (Blendcor) on the Witwatersrand, and Walvis Bay in Namibia. BP Botswana has 40 retail sites across the country, competing with Shell, Engen, Caltex and Total. The strategy focuses on high volume and growth areas in the eastern part of the country, such as Gaborone and Francistown. Steady upgrading of the BP service station network in Botswana has been BP policy since 1991. The tempo has increased more recently as growth opportunities present themselves in urban areas. Whilst it is not strictly profitable to do so, BP maintains small fuel sites in the rural areas, helping to support one of the government s main objectives - rural development. LPG is supplied from Pretoria and delivered to some 500 customer delivery points spread across the country from Mamuno in the west to Bokspits in the south and Kasane in the north. All deliveries emanate from the three depots inside the country located at Gaborone, Francistown and Serule. Air BP operates at Sir Seretse Khama airport in Gaborone, refueling national and international airplanes, and in Maun in the north, with the main market being light tourist aircraft. BP Botswana has a whole range of commercial customers. Main contracts are with Debswana, the Diamond Company, Central Transport Company (CTO) the government fleet, Jwaneng Mine, construction companies and transport companies such as Seabelo's Transport and Lobtrans CTO, the Botswana government's transportation arm, and Botswana Railways, between them, consume a substantial volume of BP petroleum products annually. BP (Switzerland) employs over 160 people and has a revenue of over $US 27 million. The main centers of employment are Zug (headquarters), Lausanne (Sales center western Switzerland), Unterengstringen (headquarters Castrol) and Mellingen (Dispatching). Switzerland is a very diverse country with four national languages. BP's brand is well known and accepted within the population and BP (Switzerland) was one of the first countries in the word to rebrand all sites with the new Helios brand. BP (Switzerland) aims to remain number 1 in the convenience market in Switzerland and to continue to offer its customers leading service. The BP site network is one of the largest in Switzerland with centrally located and convenient stations, many of them with shops. In March 2002, a strategic alliance between BP (Switzerland) and the Swiss Gas industry was successfully signed. Together with the Swiss Gas industry, BP (Switzerland) will offer CNG (compressed natural gas) at selected BP sites in the Zurich market. It is the first time that an oil company has cooperated with the gas industry in Switzerland. This move maintains BP's position at the forefront of the green agenda in Switzerland. Social investment and community initiatives BP (Switzerland is also committed to social and community investment. As an example, BP (Switzerland) led a successful Charity Campaign for Swiss children. In partnership with 14 Swiss Cantonal Banks and one of the most reputed and credible foundations in Switzerland, BP's retail stations collected the funds, to date more that $US 2 million. Our chemicals business has been here for 25 years and our aromatics and acetyls division of the refining and marketing segment operates a joint venture with Rhodia Ster in a 240-kilo tonne/year PTA plant where we have 49% participation. Our Exploration and production (Upstream) activities have been in operation since 1998. In 2004, we completed exploration operations in two deep-water blocks offshore from the north coast of Brazil, and currently we are evaluating options for further deep-water exploration in South Brazil. Our Marine business sells marine lubricants and Castrol offshore supplies high quality control fluids, for the growing offshore oil and gas production market. Our latest business, Air BP, started operations in October 2002 and is currently investing in the construction of new a infrastructure for storage and distribution of aviation fuel and lubricants. We also have a key presence in renewables. Our solar power business has been in operation since 2000, and in 2003 it completed the largest solar project in the country s history for the Ministry of Mines and Energy. We installed systems for 1,852 schools in remote off-grid communities in 11 different states in the North and North-East of Brazil. We are an active business partner in Brazil. During the last 5 years, BP has led operating ventures with Petrobras, Shell, ENI, TFE and Exxon as co-venturers in the upstream area. Community investment As in all countries where we operate, we complement and underpin our business success, through a number of community investment activities. In Brazil, these primarily focus on three areas: we provide solar energy to communities in the North, North-East and South-East of Brazil close to our operations we support education in community schools, through voluntary work, funding for new facilities, and teaching of computer skills to underprivileged children we support enterprise building through the provision of local training and skills centres in partnership with local organisations in poorer communities. The state company, Petromoc, has a 48% share of the market, BP has 35% and two other oil companies share the remaining 17%. All intercontinental flights operated by TAP (Portuguese Airways), and Mozambique Airways (LAM), are handled by Air BP in Mozambique. BP controls eight depots and supplies Jet A1 and Avgas at eight airfields. Air BP also supplies Jet A1 to the national airline for domestic flights and international carriers on a contractual or on a spot basis. All liquid fuels are still imported by Imopetro, a private procurement company owned by the Industry, which has sole purchasing authority on the open international market. BP Mozambique has three ocean installations at Maputo, Beira and Nacala respectively, where initial receipts of bulk cargoes are made. The three ocean terminals supply fuel to the whole of the country, with the Beira terminal supplying large quantities to Zimbabwe and Malawi through the Beira-Mutare pipeline. Each country does its own procurement and nominates the vessels used. Onshore storage is handled by BP Mozambique which pumps the product from Beira to Zimbabwe by pipeline, or in the case of Malawi, transports it by road tanker from Beira and by rail from Nacala. There are 52 BP service stations concentrated mainly in Maputo, Beira and Nampula cities. Indicating growing confidence in the economy, BP plans to invest US$6 million in its Mozambique marketing and distributing infrastructure in the next two years. Although it competes with nine other oil companies in Mozambique, increases in traffic have been increasing sales. One of BP's most successful stations, Auto Estrada Service Station, on the Maputo Corridor, increased its sales from 8 000 litres a day to 12 000 litres a day over a three year period. BP operates the only lubricants blending plant in the country, supplying blends for Petromoc and ExxonMobil, and supplies 70% of the local lubricants market. On the commercial side, BP supplies fuels and lubricants to Toyota's entire vehicle fleet nationwide. A large contract also exists with Mozal, the aluminium smelter erected on the outskirts of Maputo. BP has erected a fuel depot and pumps on Mozal's site to serve the vast number of contractors. Pumps have also been erected at the harbour for the same purpose. For the duration of the contract, BP will supply all diesel, petrol and lubricants to Mozal. Cervejas de Mozambique (a subsidiary of South African Breweries), produce the prized local beers 2M and Manica. BP supplies all of its fuel and lubricant requirements and has erected fuel tanks on the premises. BP Mozambique also supplies fuel and lubricants to Coca-Cola Sabco Mozambique, CFM (Harbours and the Railway Company) and the Electricity Company (EDM). There is great excitement over the Maputo Corridor (a strip of development to be established between South Africa and Mozambique). It is estimated that the petroleum product transit trade will be worth in excess of US$100 million once the corridor is fully functional. Maputo is closer than Durban to Johannesburg, Swaziland and Mpumalanga in South Africa, and therefore well placed to gain a part of the trade presently handled via Durban. BP plans to upgrade its retail network along the Maputo Corridor, the Nacala Corridor into Malawi, and the Beira Corridor into Zimbabwe. It has strategic sites on the connecting roads between the three corridors, located in economic centres that are scheduled for private development. The upgrade will complement existing BP infrastructure. A bulk tank and kerosene-can filling plant was established in 1901, and for a while Zanzibar supplied the oil needs of much of the east coast of Africa and the Indian Ocean islands. Shell expanded to the mainland and, with the formation of the Consolidated Petroleum Corporation in the late 1920s, BP acquired an interest in the company. In 1970 the Government of Tanzania bought a 50% interest in what was then Shell and BP Tanzania Limited. In March 1982, BP bought out Shell's interest and the company became BP Tanzania Limited. Today BP's commercial customers include Portland Cement, Coca-Cola, the breweries, sisal and wattle estates, the cotton industry, shipping and the spice trade in Zanzibar. BP supplies the Trans Africa Railways Corporation Ltd and a number of transport operations and construction companies. The company has a 38% market share and, since market liberalization in 2000, it can offer its own prices at the fuel pumps. In the retail or service station sector, BP Tanzania holds approximately 35% market share. It holds about 35% in the commercial sector and 70% in aviation. BP Tanzania is among some 40 oil marketing and trading companies in Tanzania with Total, Oryx, Engen, GAPCO, GAPOIL and Oilcom Tanzania Limited, alongside BP, being the leading ones. BP is introducing convenience stores at some of its service stations. One store has opened in Dar es Salaam, with two to follow shortly. The company is improving its network of sites in Dar es Salaam and Arusha through new sites, raze and rebuilds, as well as site upgrades. Air BP is the sole supplier to most of the airports in Tanzania except for Dar Es Salaam. The new Jet A1 facility on Zanzibar Island has already exceeded expectations due to the booming tourist market. In Dar Es Salaam Air BP has 75% of the market share in aviation fuels and in Zanzibar 100%. It recently signed a supply deal with Oman Air, which does three flights a week. Part of BP's business is transit trade: bringing products into the port of Dar es Salaam and then through the country to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the former Zaire, Zambia and Malawi. BP Tanzania markets a diverse range of automotive and industrial lubricants as well as a newly introduced range of detergents and specialty products. Most of the major, fast-moving grades of lubricants are blended at the Oryx LOBP situated in Dar es Salaam. Specialties, slow moving grades and the detergent ranges are presently imported from a number of BP associate plants around the world such as Singapore, Dubai, Durban and Harare. LPG has been in the Tanzania market for over forty years. BP monopolized the market - which relied on LPG imports - until Agip entered after the construction of the local refinery, Tipper, in 1964. Now BP and Agip Tanzania Limited (which has since been sold to ADDAX and operates as Oryx Tanzania Limited) are the only leading players. BP Tanzania has a solar sales organization dealing with the marketing and installation of solar photo-voltaic systems and has been in the Tanzanian market for about eleven years. Based in Dar es Salaam, BP Solar's coverage of the up-country has been through the distribution network already created by BP Tanzania. Alaska-Canada Gas Pipeline BP and its partners, ExxonMobil and ConcoPhillips, are considering building a buried, high-pressure, natural gas pipeline from Alaska s North Slope to North American markets in response to growing demand for natural gas. The pipeline would ship 4.5 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) of natural gas and could be expanded to transport up to 5.6 bcfd. The pipeline would provide open access to producers and consumers along its route. This would be one of the largest private energy projects undertaken anywhere in the world. ______________________ Photography: 10 inch cochrane to edmonton Natural Gas Liquids pipeline. With the increase in development, the retail team has expanded its network here. Recently BP Namibia and BP Botswana worked closely together to place service stations at the best strategic locations along the new Trans-Kalahari toll road, linking Botswana with Namibia. Commercial customers range from farming, marine and the breweries, to dairies. On the West Coast in Walvis Bay, where BP has an installation, the main customer is the fishing industry. Air BP operates jointly with Shell and Engen at Windhoek's Hosea Kutako airport, and individually at Eros airport, just outside Windhoek. Other depots include Etosha, Ondangwa and the Caprivi Strip. Most imports, both fuels and lubricants, come through Walvis Bay while liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and white spirits are railed from Durban and Cape Town. Close proximity to Botswana makes exports from Buitebos Depot or Gobabis viable as it cuts out the long distribution line from the Witwatersrand. During this period, we have evolved from a foreign company operating in China, to one that is part of China Since 1973, we have experienced three distinct development stages. In the beginning, our growth came from chemicals licensing and marketing. In the 1980 s this developed into onshore and offshore exploration and production and from the mid 1990 s, large-scale equity investment and manufacturing. Since 2005, BP s activities in China include production and import of liquefied natural gas (LNG); supplying aviation fuel; importing and marketing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG); fuel retailing; lubricants; solar power installations; joint venture chemical plants and the sales of chemicals technology. With a total investment of over US$3 billion on commercial projects, BP is one of China s largest foreign investors. Operations Yacheng-13 operation, located in the South China Sea, is China s largest offshore natural gas field. It represents BP s major involvement in the exploration and production of oil and gas in China. Yacheng 13-1 supplies natural gas to both Hong Kong and Hainan Province via sub-sea pipelines. BP is the only foreign partner in China s first LNG import terminal and trunk-line project in Guangdong province. In August 2002 China selected Australia's North West Shelf, in which BP has a one-sixth interest, to supply LNG to the Guangdong LNG project. In addition, Indonesia s Tangguh natural gas project, in which BP holds a 37.2% interest, has been chosen as the supplier for China s second LNG terminal project in the Fujian province. In cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Science, BP designed, supplied and commissioned a 1 Mega Watt peak (1MWp) solar photovoltaic on-grid power system in the Shenzhen International Horticultural Exposition Park. BP and Guangzhou Development Industry Holdings (GDIH) jointly operate a world-class oil and Chemicals products terminal at Nansha. Nansha terminal has the largest fuel oil capacity in the Pearl River Delta area in China and has been selected by Shanghai Futures Exchange as a delivery point for future contracts. We are also working together with both PetroChina and Sinopec, the two major national players in China to acquire, revamp and operate 500 service stations in Zhejiang and Guangdong respectively by 2007. At present, BP has 6 LPG joint ventures in South and East China with a total investment of over US$250 million. We are currently the leading LPG importer and operator in China. We also operate an 80,000 tonne a year lubricant blending plant in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. Both BP and Castrol brands are participating in the premium lubricants market and have a combined market share in consumer sector of over 4%. Two BP entities registered outside China, BP Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. and BP Holdings B.V, have invested in two joint ventures registered in China in Shenzhen and Guangdong respectively. These two joint ventures supply jet fuel to airports located across South China. BP s Petrochemicals business has been active in China since 1973, initially as a licensor of petrochemical process technology, to date BP has signed 26 licencing agreements. In the mid-1990s we embarked on investments in manufacturing and marketing enterprises focused on growth of our core chemicals businesses in China. In partnership with the Fu Hua Group, BP established BP Zhuhai PTA joint venture in early 2003, currently the largest PTA manufacturing facility in the world. The Yangtze River Acetyls Company (Yaraco), a joint venture between BP and Sinopec, was the first major foreign infrastructure investment inland China. With an annual acetic acid capacity of 350 thousand tonnes and 80 thousand tonnes per year ethyl and butyl acetate, Yaraco represents the largest Acetic Acid complex in China. In May 2004, BP and Sinopec signed an agreement to build a 500,000 tonne of acetic acid per year in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. ____________________ * for the purpose of these pages, BP refers to the BP Group companies and other entities operating in China. Through BP's Northern Europe Gas & power business unit, we also market gas and electricity. While its strategic focus is on gas storage, BP Nederland Energie produces gas both onshore from around Alkmaar and offshore approximately 20 miles west of The Hague. Our interests in refining are represented by The Netherlands Refining Company (Nerefco), which is a joint venture between BP (69%) and ChevronTexaco (31%) and which operates the refinery in the Rotterdam port area. Producing a wide range of finished and intermediate products, the refinery has an annual production capacity of 400,000 barrels of crude oil (the largest in Europe) and a storage capacity of 4.3 million cubic metres. Our import/export terminal in Amsterdam has the port's largest storage capacity and has facilities for storage, blending and upgrading products. Our Gas business supplies propane and butane for heating and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) to our own service stations and those of other majors in the Netherlands. Our service stations have a strong focus on convenience and offer Freebees - a highly successful loyalty system run in partnership with a free Internet provider and a drug store chain. We also supply Castrol, BP and Duckhams branded lubricants for both the motorist and for business, industry and agriculture. Through Air BP we provide jet fuels and lubricants at both international and smaller airports, and through BP Marine we supply fuels, lubricants and technical services to shipping companies and the fishing industry. BP Solar, active in the Netherlands since 1992, has been involved in various projects, including the installation of solar panels on the roofs of 364 existing houses in Apeldoorn. At the Nerefco oil refinery, we are building a 22.5 megawatt wind farm, generating enough electricity for 20,000 households and displacing 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year. This is BP's first significant wind energy project, with first power planned for the end of 2002. There are approximately 1,700 BP employees in The Netherlands, the majority of whom are local. Social investment and community initiatives Because care for the environment, and health and safety are priorities for BP, the focus of our activities is on educational projects relating to road safety and renewable energy. We support Veilig op Weg' (Safe on the Roads) which since 1997 has taught primary school children how to deal safely with lorries in traffic. BP supplies the fuel for the demonstration lorry that visits the schools to give practical lessons. Together with an educational specialist SLO, we have developed an innovative CD-ROM game to promote traffic safety in the Netherlands. The CD-ROM, which was launched in June 2001 for children from 10 to 13 aims to teach them to deal with lorries in daily traffic more safely. In June 2002, BP and SLO received the Comenius Award for the CD-ROM. The European Organisation for Education and Information granted the award because children are very positive about the game and not only play it at school, but also at home. Together with the International Red Cross, BP Netherlands took part in one of the biggest pan-European charity coin collection campaigns during the Euro transition period. The money was collected at BP service stations in the Netherlands, Austria, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain. On 10 July 2002, children between the ages of eight and 12 enjoyed a special lesson from professor Wubbo Ockels (the first and only astronaut from the Netherlands) to celebrate the official inauguration of the 192 solar panels that BP had given to Space Expo (Europe's first large space travel exhibition).
