world. My work initially involved the onshore planning for the project mobilization and I then moved to an offshore role. My offshore responsibilities involved the optimization of the well abandonment process that is, how could we do the job more safely and more efficiently without adding any risks of damage to the environment or to the people doing the work? I was also responsible for capturing and implementing lessons learned between wells and spent my time working alongside the BP team leader offshore. I felt a real part of the team and am proud to say that I played a part in delivering cost savings and safety improvements on the project. Current role Now I am in an offshore role in the Magnus platform drilling and completions team in the North Sea. My offshore responsibilities include engineering support for the ongoing operations performing calculations and identifying problems; logistics coordination ensuring people and equipment arrive offshore at the right time; coordination of the technical limit process offshore, and reporting. I work alongside the drilling supervisor, helping him manage the operation, learning how he deals with situations and getting involved in the decision-making. Aside from working offshore, I have also been involved in the well planning side of the operation, to gain experience for my third year, office-based role. I was also given the opportunity to represent the Magnus team at the drilling and completions conference in Banff, Canada giving a presentation to people from around the world on multilateral wells. The experience The place where I have learned the most has been at the well site. Actually seeing the equipment in use and speaking with the people that operate it day in/day out allows you to gain a complete grasp of its functions and limitations. I would say the formal training has exceeded my expectations. The majority of the courses I've attended have been taken by experts in that field, flown in from all corners of the world. The variety of courses is sometimes bewildering but mentors and line managers are always there to point you in the right direction. Hopefully, I've made a difference already. As I learn more and my skills develop, I'm sure I'll be able to make an even bigger difference. My current ambitions: to have a successful career and gain a reputation for high quality work, visit New Zealand by the end of next year - and have three number ones and a platinum selling album by the time I'm 26! back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/Careers/Geophysicist Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Careers Select your country United Kingdom Students and graduates Profiles Technical opportunities Commercial opportunities Internships Profiles What we look for Our recruitment process Benefits Guidelines for candidates FAQs Log a query Geophysicist Name: Ed Rushmere - Geophysicist Job title: Geophysicist Location: Sunbury Age: 25 Academic profile: BSc, Geology and Geophysics, University of Durham; MSc, Applied Geophysics, University of Birmingham Joined BP: October 2001 Why BP? I applied to BP along with several other companies while studying for my MSc, having decided to extend my studies to broaden my employment possibilities. BP sponsored my university place and set up the summer project I undertook, so I had plenty of contact with the company and the people who worked there. I realised BP was a company I would enjoy working for, and I felt I could achieve and contribute a great deal. Having been offered a job, I started at BP within 10 days of completing my MSc! The work The transition from university into the workplace was smooth for me, as my MSc summer project led naturally into my initial role in the exploration and production technology group in Sunbury. I spent a year expanding on my geophysics processing background, and I gained some operational experience in Baku, Azerbaijan, acting as the onshore representative for a seismic survey in the Caspian Sea. I followed this with a year in the same team but based with the Angolan business unit in Staines, Middlesex, working on volume estimations and lithology modelling. I completed my Early Development Programme with a year in the Azerbaijan business unit, in the Black Sea exploration team. This role provided several new opportunities to spend time offshore on a seismic acquisition vessel, as well as observing and working on an area in the very earliest stages of exploration. This was the most challenging area as all the data you expect to be readily available doesn t exist. The team was working on all the available 2D data and the recent solitary 3D volume, with no offshore well information and an uncertain geological setting. I also gained the most from my time there, as I saw the ideas and understanding of the basin develop over the year. Current role My current role is still in the Azerbaijan business unit, in the Black Sea exploration team.A typical working day starts fairly early. I ve usually received a few emails when I arrive, so if required I respond to them. The day is then filled with updating the structural interpretation of the seismic data we have, or meetings with the geology or geophysics teams to discuss the latest developments. There are also several geophysical processing projects being carried out on the data and I am responsible for carrying out a proportion of them. Aside from my main role, I am also responsible for some of the graduate programme events and budget, and there is invariably some aspect of that network that I need to work on. The experience I ve managed to complete a wide range of high-level courses in my first three years. I ve found every course exceeds my expectations, as they are designed specifically for BP employees, and contain the technical background as well as all the latest developments in the field. The variety in the courses also allows you to pick up skills that you could not have developed elsewhere. BP prides itself on attaining best-in-class in all areas, and there is a company expectation to be at that level at all times. This philosophy is carried through all areas, but there s also a strong culture of progression and innovation, with lessons being taken from all parts of BP and reincorporated into later work. Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) also has a key role in BP, with the three rules of no accidents, no harm to people, no damage to the environment underlining everything we do. I think BP is a company that allows people who want to achieve things to flourish, and I believe that is a great way to operate. I finished university with a lot of positive ideas about the environment and the role businesses play within it. Consequently I applied to companies with strong environmental views and a real desire to improve the way they operate. A number of companies came back to me, but BP really stood out. I was immediately encouraged to fully express my enthusiasm for the subject and allowed to express my views, whether they fit with the company line or not. BP struck me as open to new ideas, enthusiastic and progressive. The company was growing at an enormous rate and offered opportunities to work in areas of the world I also wanted to visit. Obviously the financial benefits of working for such a well-established and respected organisation could not be overlooked. The work My first year was spent as an environmental advisor in Aberdeen, supporting the Southern North Sea business. This involved a number of roles such as supporting project HSE requirements, producing a permit for a seismic operation, creating a biodiversity action plan, and implementing the new chemical regulations into our operations. My second role was based in The Hague as an integrity engineer. This involved many of the aspects that I was exposed to in Aberdeen such as emergency response, risk assessment and incident investigation but went into detail in completely new areas such as mechanical integrity, corrosion monitoring and control, pipeline management, compressor performance and chemical management. Current role Now I am back in Aberdeen as an environmental adviser for two of the biggest North Sea Platforms, Bruce and Magnus. Bruce is a predominantly gas platform that on a good day can produce 10% of the UK's gas demand. Magnus is the northernmost platform in the North Sea and produces oil that comes ashore at the Sullom Voe terminal in Shetland. The range of issues I am responsible for reflects the very different nature of the two assets and their importance to BP. I am the main focal point for discussions with the DTI. I advise the assets on upcoming legislation, get involved in permitting for new projects, manage the environmental management system and coordinate audits. I am also the adviser for any new projects coming onto the two platforms. Mainly I am based in the office with meetings and communication taking most of the time. During a typical month I will try to make one trip offshore that usually spans over two to three days. Offshore, I will have a specific task to complete, such as leading an audit on our atmospheric emissions, coordinating training for the platform crew and management team or being involved in risk assessments for specific jobs. This can be tiring but great fun. The experience The support to learn something outside your day-to-day role is always there. The general attitude that I've come across is that if you understand the broader context of the work that you're doing in terms of commercial, ethical, environmental or even political then you will be able to make more effective and informed decisions. In this way you quickly become exposed to the entire spectrum of the business. I've also been encouraged to see the benefit in conferences, workshops, peer assists, special projects and also on-the-job training. My buddy was important during the first month of being with BP as he helped me to find accommodation and meet other people. Since then, my mentor has become the primary sounding board for my aspirations, problems, requests and frustrations. He's also helped me contact the right people at the right time and given me invaluable insights into how the company really operates the unwritten rules. My work is interesting, challenging and immensely rewarding. I m learning new skills every day, am involved in many tasks and hopefully am making a real difference. back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/Careers/Instrument, control and electrical (ICE) engineer Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Careers Select your country United Kingdom Students and graduates Profiles Technical opportunities Commercial opportunities Internships Profiles What we look for Our recruitment process Benefits Guidelines for candidates FAQs Log a query Instrument, control and electrical (ICE) engineer Name: Ian Livingston - Instrument, control and electrical (ICE) engineer Job title: Instrument electrical engineer Location: Hull Age: 24 Academic profile: 2.1, Electronics and communications systems engineering, Lincolnshire and Humberside Joined BP: September 2001 Why BP? I applied to BP because of the vast opportunities of working for a global energy company. Movement is possible not just geographically, but between streams and disciplines if you are willing to put the work in, and this variety appealed to me. BP's graduate Early Development Programme seemed first-rate. I was particularly attracted to BP's commitment to develop people while letting them hold the reins. The BP people I met at the assessment centre were very supportive and showed great commitment to helping candidates demonstrate their strengths. The work Since joining BP, I've completed three placements as a graduate instrument electrical engineer and am now in a substantive role. I ve worked in three different manufacturing groups at BP's Saltend site at Hull, gaining knowledge of a number of manufacturing processes as well as a variety of instrument electrical equipment. In each role there has been a diverse workload including numerous turnarounds. Tasks vary from maintaining high voltage switchgear, to configuring Distributed Control Systems, to reviews of maintenance manpower requirements. During my second placement I was given the role of test and commissioning engineer for a project that formed a critical path for a large turnaround. The project involved the replacement of a control system for a molecular sieve drier. The control system was tested in a unique way - a PLC simulator was used to simulate the field inputs and outputs, so that the testing could be automated. Because of the in-depth knowledge of the control system I gained during the test and commissioning stages of the project, I was asked to train the operations team in the new control system. I thoroughly enjoyed the responsibility that was placed with me and feel that I really made a contribution. Current role A typical workday does not exist! In my current role, the majority of time is spent on performance work. This includes modification to the plant's hardware, software, procedures and systems to ensure that maximum reliability is achieved. BP strongly supports your progress to chartered status with the professional institutions. My mentor is currently guiding me through to achieving chartered status with the Institute of Electrical Engineers. BP allows me to make a difference by involvement in the school links scheme. I'm a link officer for a local school, in fact the very school that I attended. This allows me to spend some time helping teachers and students learn about science, engineering and industry in general. I've also recently been involved in the Royal Academy of Engineering's 'Engineering Education Scheme'. Again BP supported my involvement with a local school. The scheme involves an engineer - me - giving a group of sixth form students and their teacher a real project to work on. The ability to aid young people interested in engineering and help them decide whether it is for them or not is extremely rewarding. The experience BP's corporate culture is one of trust and mutual respect. Development discussions take place at many levels, with colleagues, with line management and with mentors. The most impressive development experience I have undergone so far was a GDP (Graduate Development Panel). This is basically a presentation to a senior group of BP staff about what you want to do with your career. It allows you to look into your short, medium and long-term future with BP and discuss what you want to do with the panel. The panel then gives valuable advice and feedback on how you can achieve what you want. I have a great work-life balance at present, thanks to the compressed working week scheme, whereby an hour extra is worked each day over two weeks. This enables you to have every other Friday off, which is fantastic. back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/Careers/Mechanical engineer Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Careers Select your country United Kingdom Students and graduates Profiles Technical opportunities Commercial opportunities Internships Profiles What we look for Our recruitment process Benefits Guidelines for candidates FAQs Log a query Mechanical engineer Name: Dan Young - Mechanical engineer Job title: Area Engineer Location: Coryton, Essex Age: 26 Academic profile: 2.1, Mechanical Engineering (M.Eng), Southampton Joined BP: September 2001 Why BP? BP seemed to be a company that offered me the scope to develop my own direction. With engineering integral to most of BP's operations, it was a company that would give me options and opportunities as an engineer in the short term as well as teach me how to successfully apply my engineering skills in a business environment. The work I initially joined BP's Coryton refinery, where my first role was to work with the inspection group looking at pressure equipment and tankage. As a young engineer this is a good place to start, you get a feel for the responsibilities of running a refinery and get to practise some of your theory from university. From here I spent time with the site machinery group, completed a role on the site's gas turbine major overhaul and started to get involved with maintenance projects. In January 2003 it was all change. I got the opportunity to move to Grangemouth (Scotland) and into a projects role. I was immediately assigned to a project, refitting tankage at the site's Finnart terminal. My work changed and there was a shift from the day-to-day running of a refinery to focusing on the short-term delivery of a project on time and on budget, while being embedded in a contract support company. In early 2004 I was given the opportunity to return to Coryton as the area engineer for the site s Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) at a challenging time running up towards a major unit shutdown. The engineering team was also changing with a new role in the organisation and a new direction. However, this new role was to take me away from the projects world and back to the coal face of running units Current role I work as one of three area engineers at Coryton refinery, responsible for the mechanical equipment (machinery and pressure equipment) on different areas of the plant. My area is the FCC complex. Our role is to improve the availability of the process units by improving the reliability and performance of our equipment. Working within the maintenance work cycle, the engineers also generate work scopes for repairs and upgrades while helping the refinery make best use of its maintenance and capital budgets. This type of role is both enjoyable and challenging through its diversity but can also be frustrating due to the continuous and changing priorities and plant problems. It can feel never-ending at times, but very rewarding when you get it right and start to break failure cycles or implement effective strategies. My day is split between the office and site, interfacing with the refinery s management team as well as craft technicians and operators. I also spend much of my time working through repair and upgrade options with third party companies and off-site BP specialists. Doing this type of role puts you at the centre of a team running a complex set of assets with very big commercial, safety or environmental consequences when you get it wrong. It is the best type of experience of what refining and production is all about. The experience Training at BP is one of those things you drive yourself - and the more you push, the more training you will get. There is a lot of good internal and external training available to you, but don't expect a "menu" which you and all your graduate colleagues will complete together. My mentor is a senior engineer at Coryton - he's helped me pursue my route to chartership, and create the opportunities I need to pursue for my development plan. My buddy relationship has also worked well. There is definitely life beyond work. I try to spend as much of my free time as possible climbing and walking, and am also starting to take up sailing. back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/Careers/Petroleum engineer Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Careers Select your country United Kingdom Students and graduates Profiles Technical opportunities Commercial opportunities Internships Profiles What we look for Our recruitment process Benefits Guidelines for candidates FAQs Log a query Petroleum engineer Name: James Boyle - Petroleum engineer Job title: Petroleum engineer (PE), Middle East & Pakistan Location: Sharjah, United Arab Emirates Age: 29 Academic profile: Masters, Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Joined BP: November 1998 Why BP? I applied to BP because of its reputation as one of the top oil companies. I had friends in BP and they spoke favourably of the company, especially with respect to the development of graduate engineers. I had some experience with other oil companies as I was sponsored by Amerada Hess during my Masters year at university and had spent a year in industry with Shell in Aberdeen during my Bachelors, but I thought BP suited me best. In BP there is a strong support structure to assist with your development. The range of opportunities is large and there is help and advice available, depending on which career path you decide to take. The work My first two positions were based in Aberdeen. Initially, I worked as a petroleum engineer in the Aberdeen office for a year and then I requested a move into operations. This resulted in a move to a rotational (two weeks on / two weeks off) role on a North Sea platform. After 18 months I applied for an international move and was lucky enough to be sent to Sharjah in UAE, again as a petroleum engineer. My most challenging task was to transfer the skills I d learned in the North Sea to Sharjah, while taking into consideration the cultural differences of the location. Typically in the first three or four years you will do three placements. Thereafter, you have the choice of how long you stay in each job usually three or four years. Current role My day typically starts with an operations meeting. We talk to the well site supervisors working on the drilling rig to review the operations from the previous day and to discuss work to be carried out over the next 24 hours. This is followed by a review of all the producing wells in the field. I m responsible for ensuring that the wells continue to produce gas at the expected rates: if the rate from a well drops, we have to find out why and then come up with a plan to restore the production. The safety of the workers is of prime importance. A lot of time is spent assessing risks before a job starts and also carrying out audits as the work takes place. My other responsibilities include forecasting production over the short term (next six to12 months) and long term (five years plus). On the whole, the work is very interesting. As we work on all phases of a well s life, from planning through to production, it is very rewarding when you see the benefits of all your work. Also I work with many different disciplines such as geologists, drillers, process engineers and accountants, which adds variety. The experience I would describe BP s culture as flexible. There are procedures and policies on how things should be done but we are encouraged to bring new ideas to the table if they will improve the way we work and make the operation more efficient. The diversity of the employees is probably one of the reasons for the company s success and what makes working for BP enjoyable. Everyone in BP is challenged with making a difference. The target for production is written into my performance contract and the team I am in is responsible for getting the production from the reservoir to the surface facilities. I feel I have an excellent work/life balance. More importantly, I m sure my wife agrees! In my spare time I play a lot of sports and enjoy travelling around the Middle East and Far East. Through my work I ve had the opportunity to visit different parts of the world I would not have had if I were working for another company. back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/Careers/Reservoir engineer Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Careers Select your country United Kingdom Students and graduates Profiles Technical opportunities Commercial opportunities Internships Profiles What we look for Our recruitment process Benefits Guidelines for candidates FAQs Log a query Reservoir engineer Name: Joanna Banks - Reservoir engineer Job title: Reservoir engineer Location: Sunbury Age: 33 Academic profile: 2.1, Natural sciences, Cambridge University and PhD, Earth sciences, Liverpool University Joined BP: September 1996 Why BP? The opportunity came up to do some work experience with BP while I was doing my PhD, and I worked in the research group for six months in 1995. We were looking at the influence of faults and fractures on the efficiency of water injection to sweep oil to the producing wells integrating our geoscience understanding with reservoir performance. When I d completed my PhD, I chose to join the graduate programme as a reservoir engineer. The work I did three jobs while on the early experience programme. Each of these projects was at a different stage of field development, which meant the focus of the work was different in each role. I was in Aberdeen for two of these roles. The Harding field had just started producing oil and was still drilling the early development wells, ramping up production and we were trying to understand and model reservoir performance in the first year. My next job, in the Miller team, was focussed on reservoir surveillance and well work to try to maximise oil production as the field declined. My final role, while still on the graduate programme, was in Vietnam, providing reservoir engineering support to the Lan Tay Gas Project in preparation for sanction, prior to project execution and production start up. I spent two years in Ho Chi Minh City, which is a fantastic place to be. You re working in a totally different environment and it makes you culturally aware: it was a brilliant learning experience. At the beginning of 2001 I moved back to Sunbury to the Egypt team. This team completed integrated field studies on declining fields in the Gulf of Suez, concentrating on longer term options to maximise recoverable oil, rather than the day-to-day operations. Current role My current role in the Angola team varies widely from week to week an important part of the role is to be flexible enough to respond quickly to requests as they arise. We are working on blocks that BP doesn t operate, so my role is to provide assurance on the Operator s activities, to transfer learnings to BP operated projects and to influence the Operator to adopt BP best-practice where appropriate. Consequently, I currently spend a lot of my time in meetings! In this role I am not doing detailed technical work rather I overview the Operator s work. I am working closely with geoscientists, drilling engineers and operations engineers as well as project managers and commercial analysts. This role is interesting because I have a broad view of the whole business - you see a lot of what s going on and how things interact. In my current job I also travel a fair amount to participate in partner meetings, mostly in Houston, but there are also meetings held in France and Angola. The experience I enjoy going to work every day if I didn t I wouldn t still be here! BP is a huge, diverse organisation, but almost everyone that I have worked with enjoys their job, and is motivated to do it as best they can. Usually I feel I can strike a happy work / life balance. In my spare time, I enjoy travelling to new places, especially after having spent two years exploring SE Asia, and photography I ve recently completed a City and Guilds qualification in photography through evening classes. I also enjoy climbing and walking in the mountains and most other activities that allow me to see the countryside. back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Site Index Site Index About BP BP at a glance Who we are -
