Crude oil LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Chemicals Crude oil The Middle East is major oil producing region and much of the world's oil is transported from there around the world, primarily to Europe and North America, South East Asia and Japan. Crude oil is a mixture of many substances, mainly compounds of carbon and hydrogen, together with varying portions of sulphur. Crude oil has a wide range of quality, varying from light sweet crude to heavy sour crude. Heavy crude is dark, thick, sticky and viscous. Light crude is coloured light golden brown and flows fairly easily. Medium crude has characteristics in between those of light and heavy crude. Back to top LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Natural gas is transported as LNG from the Middle East and western Australia to Japan, Western Europe and the United States. LNG is formed by cooling natural gas to -160 deg. C to form a liquid. The process of liquefaction reduces the volume of the gas by 600:1 and this reduction in volume makes sea transport from areas where gas is produced to consuming countries an economically viable proposition. BP is playing a leading role in the worldwide growth of the LNG market. We are applying innovative and progressive approaches to bring LNG to new markets and customers and positioning to be a major force in the short term trading of LNG. BP was the first major LNG producer to place a tender for new LNG ships where neither supply source nor end customer were identified or contractually tied. The order signalled our commitment to creating greater flexibility and transport optimisation within the LNG chain. The ships, British Trader, British Merchant and British Innovator were delivered in 2002 and 2003 and are amongst the most advanced in the world. Find out more about BP LNG Back to top Chemicals BP Shipping transports petrochemical products to and from its own manufacturing sites. BP Shipping provides technical and operational assurance to ensure the highest possible safety standards. BP does not operate any chemical vessels but uses quality ships and barges as required under charter agreements. In 2002 the ship vetting team received over 27,000 vetting enquiries for BP Group, through its on-line system. Last year the vetting team assessed some 3,100 ships for their suitability for BP business, based on a range of criteria including. Management Operations Crewing and structural standards Using its own inspection reports some 2,200 combined with those shared across the industry We provide services to the entire BP Group. The database of some 17,500 ships contains information on all oil, gas and chemical vessels used by the group worldwide. BP Shipping's vetting and inspection criteria are particularly strict for older vessels. A ships over 20,000 tonnes dwt and over 15 years old are required to have a structural condition assessment programme (CAP) rating and an associated fatigue analysis by a leading Classification Society. BP Shipping is an active participant in SIRE and was involved in the setting up of the system. Some 75 reports per month are pulled from the system for analysis. BP was also one of the founder members of the CDI system and has been involved in its development and start up and further development. BP Shipping is committed to the selection of quality vessels for BP use and to raising standards within the industry. Operating standards BP Shipping's operational team provides operational management for one of the world's largest shipping companies with a modern fleet. In addition, there is also large number of small coastal ships used by BP Group companies around the world. BP Shipping is committed to maintaining and improving on this performance by massively investing in new tonnage; significantly reducing reliance on the spot market; continuing to operate the industry's most stringent ship vetting and inspection programme and by recruiting and retaining the very best people. The BP Shipping fleet is expanding following a decision to embark on a $3 billion build programme in the period 2001-06. This will see over forty new ships joining the BP-operated fleet of oil and gas tankers. By 2006 this will boost the capacity of the 'Controlled Fleet' (i.e. ships either directly operated or time chartered) to around half the Group's business requirement, with voyage charter ships continuing to supply the balance. BP Shipping's commercial and technical teams are involved in the design, procurement and construction of the new ships; all are double-hulled and many have additional features such as on-line systems to monitor hull stress. However, despite all that is done to reduce risk, there is always a possibility that something could go wrong. Clearly defined and well thought out plans are essential to deal with emergencies at every level of BP operations. Within BP Shipping, each ship has an Incident Management Plan and this is supported by onshore teams who are on-call 24 hours a day seven days a week. BP Shipping's emergency response plans are also designed to dovetail with BP's national and regional response plans and to ensure that roles and responsibilities are clearly understood. The British Pride was the only passing ship in the area which stopped to offer assistance. The Setia Jaya had suffered an engine room explosion and fire which gutted the accommodation area, and destroyed the bridge and communications equipment. The vessel had been adrift for six days. Very regrettably, six members of the crew were killed in the explosion. In total fifteen survivors were rescued and brought to safety. Two of these persons were treated for their injuries on board the British Pride. The survivors have been made comfortable, and will be repatriated in Bali in about four days time. BP Shipping has a long and proud tradition of providing assistance to those in need. Capt Chris Moss and his crew are to be commended for their actions. The event will be held at the Barbican, London, on June 30th and is expected to attract much interest from all areas of the shipping industry, not just the tanker sector. More than 50,000 distances between 1,000 ports have already been calculated by a ten-strong team of Master Mariners. "We know that the shipping industry needs high quality, credible data that it can rely on," said Bill Morris, of AtoBviaC, the software specialists working with BP Shipping on the first major update for ten years. AtoBviaC is bringing the Marine Distance Tables into line with modern trading routes, larger ships and increasing numbers of ports in more regions of the world. AtoBviaC will make the Marine Distance Tables available as computer software, via the internet; www.atobviac.com and in CD and in book form. Distances will be available to over 2000 ports and more than 150,000 freshly calculated distances are expected to be in the first release of the revised Marine Distance Tables. Ports will be selected from the existing publication, Worldscale ports plus additions from Lloyds Port Call Data. Voyage planners will be able to see the start point and destination, routeing options and a visual display of the route on a scalable map. Among many new features, AtoBviaC enhancements will automatically route to avoid environmentally sensitive areas whilst still retaining the ability to select the shortest route if required. New capabilities will make the Marine Distance Tables attractive to other sectors of the shipping industry such as dry bulk, containers and demurrage interests, not just oil and gas vessels. Notes to editors: BP Shipping's Marine Distance Tables were first issued in 1958. The last substantial revisions were issued in 1976 and an update was issued in 1991. The Tables have been available on disk since 1991. AtoBviaC is a well resourced and dedicated company run by the people who developed the software and produced the last update to the Distance Tables for BP Shipping in 1991. Worldscale's annual schedule of nominal tanker freight rates is published by a joint endeavour of two non-profit making organisations known as Worldscale Association (London) Limited and Worldscale Association (NYC) Inc. During the past 12 months, the ship has been fully employed and has set some impressive trading statistics. For example, she has loaded 20 cargoes from 3 different load ports and discharged at 7 different LNG terminals. In the process she has travelled 113,242 nautical miles and carried over 1.1 million tonnes of LNG worth some $280 million if valued at current US gas prices. All this has been achieved safely, with no DAFWC (Days Away From Work Cases) and the vessel has amassed 251,952 hours DAFWC-free since entering into service. The British Trader is one of three LNG carriers delivered to BP in the last year without being tied to a specific LNG source or customer, a first for the industry. About LPGLPG - Propane and Butane - exist as colourless and odourless gases at normal room temperature and atmospheric pressure, but liquefy with moderate changes in temperature and or pressure. It is this property that permits the transportation and storage of LPG in liquid form. LPG expands upon release and 1 litre of liquid will form approximately 250 litres of vapour. LPG comes from two sources. It can be obtained from the refining of crude oil or extracted from natural gas or crude oil streams coming from underground reservoirs. LPG is used as a fuel for domestic (cooking) and industrial heating and drying processes. It can also be used an automotive fuel or as a propellant for aerosols.
