Fawad and Sharon share their experience of BP Retail.... Fawad Customer Service Assistant to Assistant Store Manager Fawad started as a Customer Service Assistant in 2001. It wasn t long before he passed the internal selection for our Management Training Scheme. After talking to friends in a range of other companies, Fawad s come to the conclusion that the development opportunities at BP are exceptional. The training is some of best around, he says. From courses at head office to activities on-site in different stores, I ve had lots of chances to develop my skills. He s also a big fan of the open culture at BP. There s a real chance for you to show your true colours, he says. And if you prove your talent, there s lots of support to progress. He also appreciates the way that everyone is encouraged to use their initiative. If you come up with a better way of doing things, you ve got the freedom to put your ideas into practice. Perhaps that s why Fawad is keen to stay with BP. I d like to stay with the company, and progress further, he says. Sharon Trainee Store Manager to Training Specialist Sharon s had a rich and varied career with BP. She joined us in 1983 as a Trainee Store Manager. Only 6 months after taking on the role of a Relief Store Manager, she was running her own site. Sharon says the training she received was Fantastic, wide-ranging and continuous. As soon as one element stopped, another began. It was a result of the great training Sharon received that she decided that this was the direction she wanted her career to take and so now Sharon has joined the Area Training Specialist team. There s nothing better than having someone come up to you at the end of a training session to thank you for helping them learn such a lot, she says. Sharon also likes the friendly supportive atmosphere at BP Retail. If you have a problem, or need advice, there s always someone at the end of a telephone who can help you out. back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/Careers/Retail store managers Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Careers Select your country United Kingdom Careers in BP Retail stores Retail store manager About BP retail Meet our people Retail store manager Wild Bean Caf manager Deputy store manager Customer services assistants Retail store managers With previous retail management experience, you will be making sure that our fast growing business grows even faster. I applied to BP because it looked like a particularly interesting company to work for, with an extremely diverse array of job opportunities during the Early Development Programme and beyond. The trading roles interested me greatly as the jobs are fascinating and challenging, and you get to work in a very fast-paced environment - I think the atmosphere is one of the things that attracts people to this work. BP was also preferable to other companies due to the fact that the work-life balance here is much better than any of our peers in the trading arena. Current role My first 30 minutes in the office are spent clearing out my inbox as I receive quite a few e-mails from our other trading floors in Chicago and Singapore overnight. My first work of the day is to collate the market values from yesterday's close of business and the forward curves for our existing trades. I then translate this into profit or loss figures for the day, which I communicate to our traders, charterers and management. Twice a week we have a meeting to discuss the impact of these figures and to define our trading strategy for the days ahead, and part of my role is to provide all the necessary information to ensure that these meetings are as productive as possible. As deals are done throughout the day, I enter the details into our trading systems and advise my colleagues on their effect to our trading exposure and risk. I work hand in hand with the freight swaps trader to establish the best course of action, and provide early warnings as to when we might want to close out an existing position. As the freight trading book is relatively new and the market is immature, the rest of my time is taken up in meetings or working on ways to improve our current systems and processes to make our information more valuable and accurate. Recently I've been working towards setting up a joint venture trading book with our crude bench, to share knowledge and trading strategies for mutual benefit. The work The nature of the business I work in is that there are times where there is a large amount to do and other times when things are quieter. One of the greatest challenges has been to make my own decisions as to what the most pressing need is -and schedule my work accordingly. As a performance analyst, a large part of the job is communicating various actions and results to different people within the company. When discussing trading decisions, it's OK to use all the jargon when you are talking to traders or charterers, but when you are discussing these things with accountants and senior management, you need to pitch it accordingly. When I'm asked for a piece of analysis it's necessary to realise, early on, the importance of the work and therefore how accurate the numbers need to be. This is crucial from a time management point of view. If someone just wants some indicative numbers to back up an argument, then it's not necessary to spend hours collecting all of the information from our various databases to provide the answer to the nearest dollar. However, if I'm providing a piece of analysis for the Group Financial Outlook, the finer details are important and therefore the extra time needs to be spent. The experience The work so far has been extremely interesting and I've been actively encouraged to get involved as much as possible. I have also been fully supported to get all of the training needed for my current role and my future - I've been encouraged to attend various courses and other types of training that I feel may benefit my career. The job definitely gives a feeling of real responsibility and the satisfaction that goes with that. back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers Contact us Use this form to contact BP.
