Additionally Air BP is one of the largest suppliers of lubricants to the aviation industry. Avaiation - Air BP BP Bitumen UK BP Bitumen UK has many years of useful experience throughout the world in the develpment, production and supply of bitument products. The UK business is based at Llandarcy near Neath in South Wales. This former refinery location is now a dedicated bitumen blending and distribution terminal which is rail fed from the primary bitumen production unit at Coryton Refinery in Essex. These range from large international institutions to small local groups Community health initiatives We work in collaboration with the American University in Cairo, we are funding a project on 'Improving Water Quality,' with Maadi chosen as a pilot area We have established relationships with two organisations that help the disadvantaged. The Special Olympics is an international organisation that provides training and competition in Olympic type sports for children and adults with mental retardation. The Friends of Children with Cancer is a local group that makes the lives of children suffering from cancer more bearable and eases the burden on their families Environment Our subsidiary company, NGVC, promotes the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) as an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline for cars and taxis. This year we have sent two Cairo Transport buses to California for re-engineering to use CNG. With the success of this pilot, we hope to establish the capability in Egypt to convert thousands of buses On another scale, we are sponsoring a project by the University of Wales using satellite telemetry to determine the key foraging areas for endangered marine turtles in the Mediterranean. The project will start in July 2002 and last for almost one year. Cultural programmes We assist two initiatives helping preserve Egypt's heritage: the work of the Epigraphic Society of the University of Chicago at Chicago House in Luxor, and the renovation of the 17th Century Gayer Anderson museum in Old Cairo. In 2002, we sponsored a visit to Egypt by the London Chamber Players to perform at the opening ceremony of the Alexandria library and at other venues in Egypt. These are a few examples to illustrate the scope of our programme. We believe that wherever we operate, we should make a positive contribution to the communities that are affected by our activities. Our Social investment programme is a key component of that commitment. The Burullus offshore and North El Burg offshore blocks lie in water depths of less than 100 metres, and complement existing deepwater acreage to provide BP with a leading position across the Nile Delta. Burullus offshore has an area of about 1,309 square kilometres and lies west of the producing Ha py field. During the initial three year exploration period BP Egypt is committed to drill at least one well and to spend a minimum of $40 million. North El Burg has an area of 1,250 square kilometres and lies in the central part of the Nile Delta. BP Egypt is committed to drill no less than one well and to spend a minimum of $23 million on exploration activities during the first 3 years of the concession. Eng. Sameh Fahmy, Egypt s Minister of Petroleum, and Hesham Mekawi, BP Egypt President and General Manager, signed the agreements to extend the MCA by 20 years and the South Gharib concession by 10 years from the date of signing. Extension of the MCA and South Gharib concessions with modified terms for BP will extend the life of the existing oil fields, maximize the recovery of the remaining reserves in these two concessions and provide a foundation for growth through future exploration. The agreements enable BP to continue investing in these concessions and commit it to invest at least $615 million over 7 years in exploration and development activities, as well as renewing and upgrading the existing facilities and infrastructure across the Gulf of Suez. Operations in these two concessions are conducted by Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO), which is a 50/50 joint venture between BP and Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), and the agreements create new opportunities for the development of GUPCO through continued investment, transfer of knowledge and application of new technologies and reservoir management practices. Commenting on the agreements, Hesham Mekawi said: BP is very pleased to have been awarded these extensions. They pave the way for a long-term sustainable oil business. We have a long and successful history of working here in Egypt, and we are delighted to have the chance to further grow our business. Notes to editors The Merged Concession Agreement and South Gharib Concession represent about 80 per cent of BP s total oil business in Egypt. Production from these concessions amounts to over 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day (boed). Through Gupco, the 50/50 joint venture with EGPC, BP has been involved in the two concessions since the 1960s. Since 1967 GUPCO has produced some 4.7 billion barrels of oil, more than one third of the country s total oil production, and invested more than $9 billion, in these areas. In recent years a number of significant discoveries have been made in the Gulf of Suez including Saqqara and Edfu.
