Hydrogen could be used in virtually every application where other fuels are used today However, it faces competition from other energy sources, from the internal combustion engine, and from existing refuelling infrastructure. Expertise and technology in these fields has been built up over the past 100 years, and advances continue to be made. For hydrogen to succeed we need technical and commercial breakthroughs not only in vehicle technology but also for the creation of a totally new fuelling infrastructure. Hydrogen pathways diagram Enlarge image BP presents these options in this diagram. At each stage there are a variety of options to be selected to build a pathway to the Hydrogen Economy'. Each pathway has both advantages and drawbacks. What succeeds technically may not succeed economically or vice versa. Customer preference and impact on the environment must also be considered. To add to the complexity, regional variations and market conditions mean that different pathways are likely to suit different parts of the world. For example in China large indigenous coal resources may encourage the production of hydrogen from coal, whereas Iceland may choose to exploit its vast geothermal resources to produce hydrogen using electrolysis. Hydrogen, coupled with fuel cells, offers another route to deliver cleaner, more secure energy to customers. BP s hydrogen efforts are focused on the production, distribution and retailing of hydrogen. This builds on BP s core experience: BP already produces a vast amount of hydrogen in its refineries, and has a wealth of experience in distributing and retailing a wide range of different fuels. Right now, BP s focus is on identifying the most efficient and effective pathways to the Hydrogen Economy . BP has analysed the different hydrogen pathways and identified where challenges and barriers to success exist. To break through these barriers and overcome these challenges, BP is building demonstration refuelling stations across the globe, and working closely with industry and government to address the outstanding questions about hydrogen. BP is also contributing to the development of codes, standards and regulations and playing a key role in education and outreach activities. Demonstration projects are assisting BP to identify the most efficient and cost-effective production-to-consumption routes available, allowing BP to focus on areas where breakthroughs are needed. This is not a theoretical exercise; the emphasis is on learning-by-doing . Clean cities programme Cleaner fuels UK Cleaner fuels USA Cleaner fuels Australia Can you have mobility and clean air? We all want the freedom of mobility that our vehicles bring. We also demand the right to breathe clean air. But, in an age of rising vehicle numbers, can you have both? The downside of growing numbers of vehicles can be seen in the world's major cities. Government and public opinion is concerned at the impact of pollution on air quality and the longer-term implications of possible climate change. Major cities throughout the world regularly respond to pollution warnings. All over the world governments are imposing new and tighter standards on fuel quality and vehicle emissions. At the same time air quality targets are rising. The European Commission has introduced tough year 2000 quality levels for gasoline and diesel quality and has set even more stringent levels for 2005. In the US the Environmental Protection Agency has signed the final tier 2 regulations for exhaust emissions and fuel quality to be phased in by 2004, with tougher standards anticipated, beyond. But it doesn't have to be a stark choice - where you can have either a powerful vehicle, which is great to drive, or one, which is less harmful to the environment. BP is introducing cleaner fuels that will substantially reduce emissions and take us closer to a world where we can have both mobility and cleaner air. To learn more about our cleaner fuels strategy and how successful we have been in lowering emissions click on the link below. Transport fuels and health Gasoline and diesel fuel are complex mixtures of molecules formulated to optimise the performance of your engine. But research has shown that some of the substances naturally present, added to the fuel, or produced when the fuel is burned could be having a negative impact on our health and the environment. Governments are responding by setting new targets for emissions but at BP we are taking a proactive approach by introducing a new range of cleaner fuels - unleaded, low benzene, low sulphur. Here's why: Lead Lead is traditionally added to gasoline to enhance octane and help protect the older engine from wear. However studies have shown that exposure to lead can cause anaemia and affect the central nervous system. High levels may also adversely affect reproduction. Children are particularly susceptible to harm if exposed to lead pollution. Benzene Benzene is a minor component of gasoline, which can escape into the air through vehicle exhausts and also when gasoline evaporates. Long-term exposure to high levels of benzene vapour in the workplace has been associated with damage to the bone marrow and a low incidence of blood cancer. The amount of benzene in the open air is many times lower than this, but its presence is still a concern. Sulphur dioxide When fossil fuels - including gasoline and diesel - are burned, the sulphur they contain turns into sulphur dioxide. This gas is an irritant, and exposure to high concentrations, for example during bad air pollution days, can cause breathing difficulties. High sulphur dioxide levels also make asthma symptoms worse. Sulphur dioxide is a major constituent of 'acid rain', associated with damage to the environment. Particulate matter The incomplete combustion of fossil fuels produces minute carbon particles, along with other components, which are emitted from the vehicle's exhaust pipe. There is increasing evidence that exposure to particulate matter in the air may be linked to adverse effects on lung function,. The actual impact on health is still uncertain, but it appears that asthmatics and chronically ill, older people may be most at risk Nitrogen oxides (NOx) Traffic fumes are a major source of man-made nitrogen oxides in the air. Short-term exposure to high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide may cause worsening of symptoms in people with lung disease or asthma. Nitrogen oxides are also a major constituent of 'acid rain', can cause adverse effects on plant life and play a key role in the formation of smog. Local priorities Air pollution is a local issue which needs a local response. National and local priorities for improving air quality will vary depending on the severity of local air quality problems, the degree of industrialisation and urbanisation, the extent of existing controls on emissions and local health care priorities. For example, between European states, air quality priorities are different - Northern European countries are especially concerned about sulphur dioxide emissions because of the impacts of "acid rain" on their forests and lakes. In contrast, Southern European states are more concerned about benzene emissions because the climate and the fact that fewer cars have catalysts results in higher urban benzene concentrations than seen in Northern European cities. Transport fuels are not the only source of these pollutants. Benzene is present in cigarette smoke, while particulates, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide are also produced by industrial burning of fossil fuels. However, BP and our customers can together make a contribution to reducing these pollutants by converting to cleaner fuels. Clean cities programme Cleaner fuels UK Cleaner fuels USA Cleaner fuels Australia What is BP doing The short-term destination for gasoline is clear: unleaded, low benzene, low sulphur or no sulphur. For diesel fuel, low sulphur is also a priority BP is committed to providing these fuels. Cities are where air quality problems are most acute and that is where we must begin. When we launched our Clean cities programme in 1999, we committed to make Cleaner fuels available in 40 cities worldwide. We exceeded our target by making Cleaner fuels available in 59 cities by the end of 2000 and we make these available in 90 cities throughout the world by the end of 2001. Air quality is a local issue which needs local answers. In cities such as Johannesburg and Istanbul the issue is taking the lead out of gasoline. In Western Europe and the US the issue is sulphur and the priority is to move to very low sulphur fuels. We can't do everything at once, but we can do something. Over the coming months we will make announcements in each of the individual cities. We'll learn as we go, and we'll set ourselves progressive, higher targets. We believe that we can show, year by year, that the products we supply will progressively reduce harmful emmissions - without denying people the fundamental freedom of mobility. BP's Cleaner fuels strategy includes: making cleaner fuels available in 90 cities throughout the world by the end of 2001 working to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gases produced by our manufacturing operations by 10% from a 1990 baseline by 2010 launching the world's first emissions trading system to point the way to cost effective emissions reduction Cleaner fuels in the UK Locate your nearest BP cleaner fuel station in the UK Site locator back to top 1996-2005 BP p.l.c. | Legal Notice | Privacy Statement BP Global/Environment and society/Clean cities programme Site Index | Contact us | Reports and publications | BP worldwide | Home Search: About BP Environment and society Products and services Investors Press Careers BP Global Environment and society Our products Cleaner fuels Clean cities programme Cleaner fuels France Can you have mobility and clean air What is BP doing?
