In 2004, our efforts to recruit the best continued We aim to recruit people who will build their careers in BP. We aim to grow our own by recruiting to the highest standards in the first place, then investing in development to enable our people to increase their skills over time. We recruit people from outside BP into senior roles if we do not have the specialist skills in house. Recruitment in 2004 During the year, we appointed 67 people into group leadership positions. 59 of these were internal candidates. Global MBA programme Our global MBA programme continued through 2004 providing 10 outstanding MBA students selected from the world s leading business schools with the opportunity to work with BP. The group who joined us in 2004 includes individuals from seven different countries, and between them they speak 13 languages. www.bp.com/careers During the year, an estimated 1.4 million people visited the careers section of our corporate website at www.bp.com/careers, and 112,000 registered an interest in working with BP. Their registrations help us to deepen the talent pool from which we select recruits. To do this, we must help our people to develop to their full potential so that they can contribute to, and share in, our success Development means a number of different things in BP: training courses and team development days: international assignments, mentoring schemes, workshops, seminars and good old fashioned on-the-job training. Our employees are encouraged to have a Personal Development Plan (PDP) and each year development conversations take place between employees and their line managers. In line with these conversations, employees fulfil development aspirations through new roles. We aim to advertise all internal job openings on our electronic bulletin board. Employees are encouraged to complete an average five training days every year. Development can help people whose ambitions and capabilities drive them into management roles; it can also be geared to meet the needs of people who prefer to progress as specialists or experts in a given role or profession. Management development in 2004 Around 5,000 people completed the First Level Leaders programme, specifically created to meet the development needs of the 10,000 people currently on the first tier of management, who collectively provide direction to some 90,000 BP employees. Over 2,000 people took part in the first full year of our Senior Level Leaders programme, which is designed to improve leadership capability among the 6,000 most senior people in BP. 1,400 of this group attended Leadership in Context and 700, Leading Self. Over 300 graduates who joined us in 2002 attended the fourth BP Global Graduate Forum, which provided them with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of how our business works by networking with peers from around the world. The 250 experienced people who joined us in senior roles attended a new introductory programme, Discover BP. We also refreshed our development programme for people identified to advance into the most senior roles (now called Career Advancement Programmes). Specialist and professional development in 2004 106 people took part in courses run in conjunction with the Projects Academy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Academy, launched in 2003, gives BP leaders the chance to develop the skills required to run large, complex, multi-million dollar projects. In addition 1,000 people completed courses designed to build sales and marketing skills in our customer-facing businesses, at the Sales And Marketing Academy, which we also launched in 2003. The Exploration and Production segment also runs the 21st Century Geoscience Programme, in which the majority of BP geoscientists have enrolled. This is run by our Exploration and Production segment, which also runs a Professional Recognition Programme, providing career paths and assessment frameworks for people who choose to develop as experts rather than as managers. The number of people working as distinguished advisors to the next generation of BP leaders and professionals also increased. There are now 136 advisors in place. This is why we run our People Assurance Survey. In 2004 more employees completed the survey than ever before Our commitments to employees BP has made a number of commitments to all its employees. We undertake to: treat people fairly and with respect and dignity reward people fairly in line with their role and contribution to achieving targets recruit, select, develop and advance people on merit enable people to feel included as part of a meritocracy make clear to everyone what is expected of them, providing open and constructive feedback nurture people's capabilities and invest in their development People Assurance Survey To meet our commitments it s important to know what our employees think about their company. Our People Assurance Survey (PAS) helps us to do this. In 2004, the survey was completed by 74% of the BP workforce. It recorded a 4% increase to 64% in employee satisfaction compared with 2003. This is the highest result since the survey was launched in its current form. Employees completing the survey were invited to respond to 76 questions. Of these, 68 showed an increase in favourable responses. The question that produced the highest increase (11%) related to employees views about our financial performance. The other largest improvements this year were in the areas of positive feelings about BP and understanding the overall goals and direction of the company. Having announced that our petrochemicals business will be split in two, favourable responses from this segment fell by 1% compared with 2003. How the survey makes a difference The data from this survey is analysed and results are compared across markets and over time. The results are fedback formally to individual businesses, providing insight into current trends in customer satisfaction across a number of dimensions. A good example of the way PAS results in positive change is our First Level Leaders programme. This was set up after managers on the first tier of the management structure expressed concerns about their prospects. Feedback suggests that holding the PAS every year means there is insufficient time to implement action plans. For this reason, the PAS will be carried out every two years in future. In the interim period we will be conducting a PAS pulse survey to monitor employee morale and opinions. This will be targeted at a representative sample of employees. Business or function leaders are responsible for assessing concerns raised and developing an action plan for their employees. In most cases, action plans are incorporated into performance contracts for the following year. We also operate our OpenTalk employee concerns line through which anyone in BP can raise concerns about possible breaches of group policy or standards. During 2004, 343 OpenTalk cases were raised from 44 countries, just over half anonymously.
