The company was established July 1, 1981, to optimize the vegetable oil transportation activities of Cattalini Transportes Ltda., a truking company established in 1956 by two Italian immigrants brothers, Dino and Stefano Cattalini, who, in the postwar era, chose Brazil as their home. At that time, five tanks with capacity of twelve thousand tons were built to stock soyabean oil, which proved to be a significant improvement in dealing with the backlog of cargo which could not be loaded directly onboard vessels from trucks. The loading rate at that time was at the most 100 metric tons per hour. To streamline operations we planned to connect our terminal to the public piers with a pipeline. However, the port authority would not grant berthing priority for vessels loading liquid bulk cargoes through our proposed pipeline. Without such berthing priority we had to rule out the idea of using the public piers. At the same time other liquid bulk cargoes, such as caustic soda for the paper industries, were arriving at the port. Much of this cargo was discharged directly from vessels into tank trucks via a portable truck loading station we rigged. Not surprisingly, that kind of operation at public piers was considered to be quite risky. It led us to look for alternatives. That's when we decided to change radically our strategy and, in the middle of 1987, we began the construction of our complex in the Rocio neighborhood, a terminal that can store any liquid product. Having started up with a storage capacity of 38,000 m3, after several expansions our terminal can now accommodate up to 89,000 m3 of bulk liquid cargo, in 31 tanks. Moreover, our terminal is now equipped with a private pier which allows berthing of two 50,000 DWT vessels simultaneously. As a matter of fact, depending on vessel dimensions we can operate with 3 vessels berthed: two vessels at the external pier and another at the internal one. Another important step in our expansion program was taken in 1987 with the acquisition of a group of tanks (Terminal 2) which had an original capacity of 13,000 m3. Today Terminal 2, after construction of 17 additional tanks, has a total storage capacity of 84,000 m3, with 33 tanks ideally built for storing high flash point liquid cargo. New projects for enlargement and specialization are under development. So far, we are quite satisfied to realize that, in our untiring search for excellence in services to clients and friends, starting with 13,000 m3 capacity in 1981, we ended 2002 with a storage capacity of 173,000 m3, distributed in 64 tanks. Last, but not least, we are pleased to announce our latest achievements: we were granted ISO-1401 certification (Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the Pier) and also ANP (Brazilian National Petroleum Agency) authorization to operate with petroleum by-products. It is also worth mentioning that since December 23rd, 1999 we have been authorized by Brazilian Customs to work as a Customs Terminal. To streamline operations we planned to connect our terminal to the public piers with a pipeline. Cattalini Terminais Maritimos Ltda.
