mmediate return transfer to the engineroom can be undertaken from the engineroom stationat any time, causing warning alarms at all bridge stations. The PMC Type 8201 pushbutton telegraph system provides emergency ordersbetween the center bridge station and engine control room. These solid-state,microprocessor based units include the nine standard telegraph orders. They alsoinclude functions for bridge control and lamp test as well as power failed and wrongdirection indicators. An additional feature is a separate and independentlyoperating group of orders for standby, cancel standby and finished with engines. The navigation lights are controlled and monitored in the bridge be aPMC Type 8010 navigation light control panel. This solid-state electronic panelcontinuously monitors the status of the remote navigation lights whether the lights areturned on or off. A visual and audible alarm is activated if a lamp, fuse or circuitfails. Dual power sources are also monitored and alarmed when either fails. PMC also supplied Type 8502 unidirectional RPM systems which displayshaft and engine RPM on analog meters in the bridge and engineroom stations. Two 78.9m Icebreaker/Supply/Tug Canadian Ministry of Transport, Home Trade 1, Arctic Ice Class 4 and Lloyd's Register ofShipping 100A1 Ice-Breaker/Tug/Offshore SupplyVessel MV Miscaroo MV Ikaluk Prime Mover Controls Inc. manufactured the Miscaroo's fivepropulsion control consoles and two winch control consoles incorporating the ship'scontrols and instrumentation. The PMC propulsion control system involves four remotestations on the bridge as well as the main engine control room station. The control systemincludes interlocks, necessary logic, maximum rpm, pitch, load sharing and load controltrims for the main propulsion system as well as provision for constant speed operationwhen in generator mode. Also a separate port and starboard rpm control head isincorporated at each control station. PMC Type PCA-2L pitch controllers were used to ensure maximumpropulsion versatility and fast, stable automatic load control to maintain optimum loadingon the engines. In order to protect the engine during extended periods of icebreaking, special torque control features have been incorporated in the propulsion control system.Automatic load sharing was also incorporated to satisfy the close tolerance required byfour engines driving two propellers. All critical machinery functions are continually monitored by a PMCalarm annunciator system, with 128 alarm points and additional remote display of groupfaults on the bridge. Providing visual and audible output of fault status, thissolid-state, fully programmable warning system offers high reliability as well as ease ofservice with interchangeable, identical plug-on modules. Over 400 motor and machinery controls, displays and alarms wereimplemented by PMC's UDC, Universal Display and Control units, which allow relativelycompact console designs. The same display concept was used in the design of the 'mimic'panel provided with the engine control room console. The Type 8201 propulsion telegraph system, which provides emergency orders between the forward bridgestation and engine control room, was another PMC product used on the vessel. Thesesolid-state, microprocessor-based units are unique in that they not only provide thetraditional propulsion orders, but also include a separate independent group for astandby, cancel standby and finished with engines. The running lights on the Miscaroo are controlled and monitoredin the wheelhouse by a Type 8010 navigation light control panel designed and built by Prime Mover Controls Inc. This panelcontinuously monitors the status of the remote navigation lights even when they are turnedoff, and provides a visual and audible alarm when a lamp, fuse or circuit fails. Dual, selectable input power sources are also monitored and alarmed when either fails. Pictures The Arctic vessels, the Ikaluk and the Miscaroo are two ofthe most powerful supply vessels in the world. The propulsion telegraph system provides a means of bi-directional communication between the bridge and the engine room. This communication is in the form of orders placed and acknowledged by moving the command levers. The system uses dual 24 V DC inputs from ship s power supplies and serial communication with error detection to ensure trouble free operation. Relay outputs are provided for an order bell and a wrong direction alarm. Telegraph Orders An order is placed by moving the lever at the bridge station in command to the desired order. This causes the reply pointers at all engine room stations to move to the same position as the command lever on the bridge. Whenever the reply pointer and the lever at an in command telegraph are not aligned, the external bells sound, at both in command locations, to indicate a new order. Once the in command engine room lever is moved to align with it s own reply pointer, all bridge reply pointers will follow up and align with the engine room lever. All audible devices will silence. The engine room can transmit orders to the bridge in the same manner. Multiple Station System The propulsion telegraph system can operate from multiple bridge and engine room stations. When a ship has one bridge station and one engine room station, both the bridge and engine room station are always in command. When a ship has more than one station in the bridge and/or more than one station in the engine room command transfer is required. Generally a telegraph command transfer button is used to transfer command. The control transfer logic can be performed by the Digital Servo Controller or via external logic (PLC, relays, or control transfer boards). Auxiliary Orders Auxiliary telegraph orders such as Standby, Cancel Standby and Finished With Engines can be integrated into the lever telegraph. Auxiliary telegraph orders can also be external pushbuttons. Wrong Direction An optional wrong direction alarm, with adjustable time delay, is activated when the direction of propulsion is not the same as the acknowledged telegraph order. This feature advises the engineer and captain when the machinery direction does not match the acknowledged order or if the machinery drifts to a direction other than the established setting. Ahead, Stop and Astern are considered distinct directions and are monitored by the wrong direction circuitry. When auxiliary telegraph orders are present on the lever telegraph scale, wrong direction alarms are disabled for any acknowledged auxiliary order. When external push buttons are used for the auxiliary telegraph orders, wrong direction alarms are disabled for acknowledged Finished With Engines and Bridge Control orders, but enabled for Standby and Cancel Standby orders. Pushbutton Telegraph Stations Series 8202-1000 Push Button Telegraphs can be connected to a Type 8503-2000 Digital Servo Controller. The lever telegraph and the push button telegraph communicate on the same network. Command Position Optional command signal transmitters can be installed at the factory. These transmitters work independently of the telegraph circuitry in the Digital Servo Controller. Each transmitter has it's own power supply with a self resetting internal fuse. Even with a complete failure of other circuitry on the Digital Servo Controller the transmitter will continue to function properly. Diagnostics Troubleshooting guidance is provided by a Watchdog LED and a Fault Code LED. Under normal operating conditions the Watchdog LED will flash. The Fault Code LED flashes two digit codes which correspond to particular fault conditions. A fault relay opens on a general system fault. Description: General The PMC electric shaft control system is an all electric alternative tothe use of mechanical shafting for interconnecting control levers on a ship. Electric shaft controls can be installed at any station where power andwiring are available. They offer continual real time display, at all stations, of theposition of the levers at the controlling station. Because all levers are continuallyaligned, control transfer between stations is smooth and "bumpless". A basic electric shaft control system consists primarily of three PMCproducts: two or more PCH control heads, one servo control unit for each control head andone control transfer unit for each system. Control Head The Type PCH control head is a single or dual lever, manual positiontransmitter consisting of a high torque servomotor with worm gear reducer and frictionclutch, a position feedback potentiometer, two end-travel limit switches, a coloreddisplay scale and internal illumination. The illuminated internal pointer provides visibleindication at night of the lever position. The control head provides positive, firm leverresponse with excellent tactile feedback and smooth movement into any selected handleposition. Optional potentiometers may be added for driving remote actuators, data loggers, etc. Servo Control Unit The servo control unit (SCU) is a track-mounted, printed circuit boardincorporating a high gain, optimally damped, servo amplifier which is used for driving thecontrol head servomotor. It includes an auto-transfer section so that a change in theposition potentiometer status due to a lever movement generates a transfer signal to thecontrol transfer unit. When its station is in command, the SCU disables the servomotor andgenerates a highly reliable 4-20mA current loop proportional to the command leverposition. This is sent to all other stations in the electric shaft loop. When not incommand, the SCU accepts the current signal from the commanding station, then compares itwith its own control lever position and drives the lever into alignment. The servo control unit includes power input reverse and over-voltageprotection circuits to guard against incorrect connections or voltage levels. Alsoextensive filtering is employed at the power supply input to prevent RFI or EMI fromaffecting the operation of the electric shaft control circuitry and to prevent theelectric shaft system from emitting EMI radiation. The servomotor output drive transistorsare thermally limited and current limited. The unit shuts down automatically onpotentiometer failure. On current loop failure the system shuts down automatically, allowing manual operation from the engine room station. Many other shutdown modes areincluded for additional safety. A volt-free contact is provided for power failure and nonalarms. Control Transfer Unit The control transfer unit (CTU) is a track mounted printed circuitboard. It provides contention-free control logic so that only one station can be incommand at any instant. Transfer signals are provided by normal open remote push buttonsor from the SCU logic. When an input is provided, the CTU generates on output signal whichtransfers control to the correct station. Transfer operates on a "first-in, lastout" basis. Up to eight stations may be connected and station No. 1 is designated asthe master. A command request from the master station will override any other request. Onpower-up, station No. 1 automatically receives control. The CTU includes a disable input terminal. When activated, it removescontrol from all stations. Internal memory retains input status while the disable isactive, so that control returns correctly when the disable signal is removed. Power inputreverses and over-voltage circuits are also provided to guard against incorrectconnections or voltage levels.
