Sydney Ports Corporation was established in 1995 after a series of reforms to the former Maritime Services Board aimed at bringing greater commercial focus, inter-port competition and customer responsiveness to the management of international shipping. Sydney Ports'vision is to be an internationally respected commercial port manager in all operational and environmental aspects, and to provide facilities to promote and support trade growth for the benefit of the New South Wales economy. Sydney Ports have published a book First Port Future Port Celebrating 100 years. The book is a monograph of Sydney Ports and its predecessor organisations, the MSB Sydney Ports Authority, the Maritime Services Board and the Sydney Harbour Trust. Rather than a history, the book salutes the evolution of what is now Sydney Ports Corporation and is thus a valuable contribution to maritime history of the city & state. The book was launched by the Hon. Michael Egan MLC, Treasurer, Minister for State Development, Vice President of the Executive Council, on 6 November 2002 at the Australian National Maritime Museum. Sydney Ports Corporation was established as a State Owned Corporation in 1995 to manage commercial shipping in Sydney Harbour and Port Botany. Sydney Ports' key responsibilities are port management and development, trade facilitation, navigational and operational safety, protection of the marine environment and regard to the interests of the community. In 2003, Sydney's ports handled over $45 billion in trade, providing a valuable contribution to the NSW economy which involves the direct and indirect employment of 17,000 people. Faced with increasing container trade growth, the existing facilities at Port Botany will reach capacity by 2010. Recognising that planning processes, and if approved, design and construction, require a long lead time, Sydney Ports Corporation is proposing to expand Port Botany to handle increases in trade for at least the next 20 years. The proposal for expansion of port facilities at Port Botany includes the reclamation of approximately 60 hectares of land to develop five new berths and additional container terminal area between the existing container terminals at Brotherson Dock and the Parallel Runway. Access to the new terminal would be by dedicated road and rail bridges off Foreshore Road. Sydney Ports recognises the varying interests of stakeholders and has deliberately designed the expansion to provide a balance between economic, social and environmental values and needs.
