serving the world's waters Radio Holland Group 0.02 Introduction Radio Holland Group has a rich history that dates back to 1916, when a group of Dutch ship owners sought to exploit available radio technology to develop ship-to-shore communications. They founded the company Nederlandsche Telegraaf Maatschappij Radio-Holland and began to supply and install their own pioneering products. Before long, the company expanded around the world, starting with the former Dutch colonies in the East Indies and Caribbean. Their mission was to provide radio installations on board designed to ensure safe sailing at all times, and to make sure that there were capable crew members on board to operate this equipment. Introduction Belgium / Canada / Caribbean / China / Egypt / Germany / Greece / Hong Kong / Mexico / The Netherlands / Norway / Portugal / Singapore / South Africa / United Arab Emirates / USA Now, after nearly a century marked by unprecedented change, we find that some things haven t changed at all. Our mission, to ensure that our customers vessels run as efficiently and safely as possible, remained the same. We continue to expand along the international shipping routes. Just as then, we are ever extending and refining our range of products and services. Perhaps most remarkable though, is the fact that the communications technology that fuelled our early growth continues to play such a dominant role on board. And that s not the only reason why we ve decided to keep the old company name. It may no longer adequately articulate the vast range of services we offer, but it tells of our roots in radio technology and in Holland, a renowned shipping nation of old. The other reason is that Radio Holland is a very well established name in the global maritime industry, synonymous with service, an unparalleled network of branches and extensive product range. But let s not forget that one thing has changed: technology. With the advent of satellite communications, the era of wireless telegraphy has come to an end. In the old days Radio Holland trained and employed the radio officers who operated the radio equipment and were stationed on our clients ships. Today, the equipment on board is much easier to operate, and the task of the radio officer has been taken over by other crew members. At Radio Holland, the radio officer has been replaced by an expert technical crew, who make sure that the equipment on board works at all times. They may not be stationed on the ships as the radio officers were, but they re ever present in the worldwide network of branches through which we carry out the bulk of our activities, and they form the mainstay of Radio Holland Group. The management buyout of the group in 2002 marked a new chapter in the logbook of Radio Holland Group. It gives us complete independence as an international sales & service company in the worldwide maritime market. Our aim henceforth is to offer our customers continuous and extensive support through our service network, which is now more closely connected than ever. And finally, we aim to be an innovative frontrunner on an even bigger and better worldwide scale. All this, seven days a week, 24 hours a day, thanks to RHG s global network. David Slager, Chairman of the Board and CEO, Rotterdam. 0.03 Radio Holland Group 0.04 Our territory covers 71% of mother earth A profile of Radio Holland Group 0.05 Belgium / Canada / Caribbean / China / Egypt / Germany / Greece / Hong Kong / Mexico / The Netherlands / Norway / Portugal / Singapore / South Africa / United Arab Emirates / USA Serving the world s waters Radio Holland Group is a leading supplier of advanced electronics for maritime users worldwide. Belgium / Canada / Caribbean / China / Egypt / Germany / Greece / Hong Kong / Mexico / The Netherlands / Norway / Portugal / Singapore / South Africa / United Arab Emirates / USA Radio Holland Group 0.10 Freedom of speech Belgium / Canada / Caribbean / China / Egypt / Germany / Greece / Hong Kong / Mexico / The Netherlands / Norway / Portugal / Singapore / South Africa / United Arab Emirates / USA Communication 0.11 Out on the open sea, the term communication takes on a unique meaning. It means reaching out to your family on land, keeping the ship owner on top of any problems, contacting your next port of call, coordinating with the rest of the fleet, and so on. At sea, communication may not only be a matter of loss or profit, but of safety, too. From day one, Radio Holland Group has taken maritime communication very seriously indeed, and considers it to be an important cornerstone of its product portfolio. Radio, dependable as ever From the beginning of the previous century, radio has been used to establish ship-to-shore communication; nowadays, the frequency bands MF, HF and VHF still play a vital role. Accordingly, Radio Holland Group offers a wide range of systems that utilize radio technology effectively and efficiently from sturdy hand-helds that can be used under the most extreme weather conditions, to terminals that quickly establish contact for distress, safety and routine calls. Satellite communications, bringing a world of change Radio s younger sibling, the satellite terminal, has changed life and work at sea dramatically. E-mail, internet, video, fax, data and voice communications feature on any ocean as they do on land. Technological developments - such as spot beam technology - have showered the maritime environment with countless new possibilities: continuous weather report updates, polling, huge data transmission capabilities, sending and receiving visual information by computer, remote diagnostics, and so on. Always up front to introduce the new opportunities satellite technology brings to the maritime community, Radio Holland Group proudly offers a comprehensive range of satcom solutions. Radio Holland Group 0.12 Let us show you the way Navigation 0.13 Belgium / Canada / Caribbean / China / Egypt / Germany / Greece / Hong Kong / Mexico / The Netherlands / Norway / Portugal / Singapore / South Africa / United Arab Emirates / USA In 1492, the world s first globe made by the German cartographer Marten Behaim did not show North America, South America, Australia or Antarctica. Africa had the wrong shape and was depicted much too small. The distance between Asia and Europe was put at 3,000 miles, rather than the actual 10,000 miles. It did not help Columbus, Vespucci or Abel Tasman very much, but it was a beginning. Where are we now? Navigation has become much easier since those pioneering days. Especially during the past five decades, tremendous progress has been made. Radio Holland has always played an important role in this process. As a result Radio Holland Group regularly introduces technological innovations, mostly developed in close cooperation between Radio Holland Group, leading manufacturers, customers and ship s crew. The ultimate goal, always, is to serve the navigational needs of the entire maritime community reliably and efficiently. Ship owners can constantly be aware of their vessels positions, course and speed with a state-of-the-art, web-based remote monitoring and tracking system, developed by Radio Holland. And the release of our revolutionary colour river radar is another example that helped improve the efficiency and safety of inland navigation. Fishermen provided helpful suggestions to develop colour echo sounders and searchlight sonar that provide invaluable support in finding and tracking schools of fish. Oil rig positioning, navigation into locks and docks, ferry operations, oil tanker approach and docking operations have become infinitely easier with a unique and universal satellite-based, portable pilot and docking system. The quest goes on Thus, Radio Holland Group continues to explore uncharted waters , matching the experience and expertise of end-users and suppliers with its own considerable know-how to provide the very best in navigation equipment! Radio Holland Group 0.14 A watertight network Automation ICT on board 0.15 Belgium / Canada / Caribbean / China / Egypt / Germany / Greece / Hong Kong / Mexico / The Netherlands / Norway / Portugal / Singapore / South Africa / United Arab Emirates / USA Ships can be very unkind to man s modern tool, the computer. The relentless vibrations of the ship, the jolts and the shudders they all seem to conspire against hard-drives and cause frequent malfunctions. And yet, there is so much that computers can do on board a ship: facilitate the loading and unloading of carriers; support fleet management functions; provide all standard office functions, such as email, wordprocessing and internet; the list is truly endless. Needless to say, Radio Holland Group offers marine computers and networks that are specially designed to withstand the rugged conditions of the maritime environment. And when you need them, spare parts can be supplied as soon as possible from stock. Problem solved. What s on your MIND? In fact, in response to an increasing demand for reliable LAN computer environments, Radio Holland Group took it a few steps further and created MIND , the Maritime IT Network Design. MIND blends Radio Holland Group s extensive experience in maritime communication and satellite systems with newly developed knowledge of ship-wide network structures. The result is a comprehensive network environment that seamlessly integrates officeware and nauticware . MIND can be filled with numerous applications to include anything from spreadsheets, interactive load management and email to the presentation of navigation and control system data, both on-board and virtually linked to the office network on shore. Obvious benefits are limitless ship-wide and ship-to-shore communication possibilities; perhaps less obvious, but no less important is the fact that MIND also enables options like remote maintenance, ship & crew management and shorebased engine room diagnostics. You ll also find Radio Holland Group in the engine room. As decades went by, we gained in-depth experience and expertise with regard to high-tech automation systems for the ship s and engine room environment. Consequently, our product range includes engine room alarm & monitoring, loading computers, intraship communications, electrochlorination systems and cathodic protection. So you see, we do indeed cover all electronics on board your ship, top to bottom! Entertainment and information of the crew and guests on board is normal nowadays, and new technologies are continuously being introduced, such as VSAT communications and DVD servers on board. Radio Holland is the AV supplier for cruiseliners, megayachts, navies and offshore industry. Safety systems - AIS & VDR: AIS (Automatic Identification System) allows vessels as well as shore side coast stations to identify other vessels in their area. Its purpose is to enhance the safety of life at sea, the efficiency of navigation, and to protect the marine environment. VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) - a black box that has become mandatory for any vessels; in case of an accident, VDR will help ascertain what went wrong. Radio Holland takes care of the complex project management of VDR installations and the required interfacing on board. Always mindful of changing needs and the opportunities brought by technological developments to address them, Radio Holland Group will continue to carefully and independently select and offer the best solutions available for efficient and safe ship operations. That, in a nutshell,is our commitment to the maritime industry.
