Cascade General owns and operates Portland Shipyard, in Portland, Oregon, the largest and most complete, ship repair facility on the U.S. west coast. This 60-acre, integrated facility is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the 40', Columbia/Willamette shipping channel. Modern, modular, ship building was pioneered here in 1942 by Henry Kaiser, in a shipyard which sprang up almost overnight to meet the war effort. Since 1995, Cascade General has continued that spirit of innovation with a modernization program that has re-defined industry standards for quality, safety and productivity. Innovative project-management systems and training programs have earned the company a reputation for on-time, on-budget work, even on the most difficult repair jobs. Cascade General has taken full advantage of Portland Shipyard's world-class assets, which include the Panamax (114' wide) Dry Dock 3; and Dry Dock 1 serving smaller craft. Dockside, there are 17 Whirley cranes (22-134 tons) 550,000 sq.ft. of covered craft shops and a full complement of state-of-the-art ship repair equipment. A 200,000 barrel, ballast-water, treatment plant is one of many unique assets which the company offers to shipping customers. The company takes pride in its ability to handle every type of vessel. Cascade General's management has taken full advantage of the yard's strategic position to develop a strong Alaskan connection--resulting in a steady stream of work from the cruise ship industry, from VLCCs engaged in the Alaskan oil run, North Pacific factory trawlers, and from the ferries of the Alaska Marine Highway Department. Regular customers include tugs and barges, cable-laying ships, and Corps of Engineers' dredges. Cascade General also provides emergency topside repairs at any location on the U.S. West Coast and operates Voyage Repair Stations at Port Angeles, Washington and Astoria, Oregon. In the last year, the development of foreign-flag business has been a priority at Cascade General. A company-wide effort to improve service has resulted in a strategy of "fast-turnaround drydockings and competitive pricing," and increasing interest from some of the 2,000 ships that visit the Columbia River annually. The yard is completed its first new build--a 124 MW power barge to serve as a floating power station in Guatemala, under contract to MAN B&W. The largest and most complete, ship repair facility on the U.S. west coast. Cascade General
