ST. PETERSBURG (Vyborg and Vysotsk) St. Petersburg, the main Russian Baltic port, is situated on the islands of the Neva Delta, at the head of Neva Bay, in the extremity of the Gulf of Finland. Year around navigation is possible, with ice-breakers assistance (and compulsory ice-class, min. L-3) from the end of November (sometimes from mid/end December) until mid April. The Sea Channel, 27 miles in length and a minimum bottom width of 80m, leads to the entrance of the Sea Commercial Port. Vessels up to 240m LOA, 40m beam and 11m draft can be handled at this port. The working hours are around the clock the whole year, local holidays excluded. The water density is 1,000 (freshwater). In order to get a turn, arriving vessels at this port have to be reported (with her ETA, cargo to be discharged / loaded plus name of receivers / shippers) one week before the end of the foregoing month. Anchorage The outer road is situated near the approach buoy, where there is a depth of approx.20-25m, with holding ground of mud and sand. Here the vessels arriving with bulk cargoes are lightened, if they have a draft exceeding the permitted one for the actual discharge berth at the Sea Commercial Port (lightening rate for grain is approx. 1500 MT/day carried out by floating crane/grab). Inner Roads: In case of congestion, the vessels waiting on the outer road are brought to the inner roads (where moored at dolphins) for inward clearance, shortly before their discharge- or loading berth becomes free, and shifted to the sole- or first berth, when same becomes free. Therefore, one should always calculate with at least one shifting, even by one discharge / loading berth.
