KLAIPEDA Due to its favourable geographical position, the ice-free port of Klaipeda has an outstanding importance for the growing flow of cargoes between the countries of the former Soviet Union and Western Europe. The port is run by the state Seaport Authority while cargoes are handled by 13 private stevedoring companies at 151 berths. The annual turnover of the port is over 7000 ship calls and about 16 mln tonnes of oil products, grain, sugar, fertilisers, timber, peatmoss, steel products, fish and other frozen commodities, containers, trucks and trailers. Klaipeda is one of the main outlets for the Russian steel products, handling about 4 mln tonnes annually. Several ferry and general cargo lines connect Klaipeda with ports in Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Great Britain and West Africa. With the present day maximum allowed draft of 10.6 m, the port can accommodate vessels with a length of 195 m, with the permission of the Harbour Master up to 240m. After the extensive reconstruction works now in full swing and the dredging of the channel and the docks, the port will be able to handle tankers and dry cargo ships with a draft of 12 to 14 m. The turnover of the port is expected to increase to 25 mln tonnes annually. The new container terminal is able to handle about 150,000 TEU's Bunkering and shipchandler services are available. Ship repairs can be effected at the modern Western Shiprepair Yard, one of the largest on the Baltic Sea. Own Muller office was established at the beginning of 1997, though for a few years before, the Group had been active at Klaipeda through sub-agents. The experienced and efficient Muller-crew acts as ship's agents and also as forwarders for local and transit cargoes shipped by railway and trucks.
