Astilleros Braswell International, S.A (ABISA), was incorporated in Panama in 1991. The Braswell name has been known internationally since 1972 for fast dependable ship repair service. According to the April 2000 issue of the UK monthly magazine, Fairplay Solutions, Astilleros Braswell, S.A. is credited with being among the most active players in the ship repair market on the Pacific Rim coast of north/south America. In addition to its world-renowned status, Braswell has a worldwide marketing network and agents in place to attract the international market to its facilities. The Panama Canal has long been known as one of the world s most important waterways and now Panama plans to take advantage of its strategic geographical location and become a world class multi-modal transportation hub as well. Some of the world's largest shipping and port companies are providing the region with unprecedented capital investments that will ensure the country s strong international maritime presence. ABISA, as the country's renowned ship repair facility, has identified strategic partners and plans that will enable the company to expand its current Pacific operations and open the highly coveted Atlantic operation. Once completed, Braswell will increase its already strong industry presence thus positioning the company as the foremost provider of ship repairs and maintenance in the region. The projections for making Panama a transshipment hub for the region, call for continued increases in ship transit and container movement across the Canal, which equates to a greater need of ship repair facilities on both the Pacific and Atlantic sides of the Isthmus. The rebuilding and completion of the Panama Railway Company by 2001 will greatly increase the container capacity that can be moved from one ocean to the other. It is estimated that the new "conveyor-belt" train system will add more than 500,000 containers per year to the volume of 1 million containers already handled by the three major ports operating at both entrances of the Panama Canal. These port holding companies are expanding their operations rapidly and expect to increase the volume of container traffic to over 4.5 million teu (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) within 5 years. The companies are Stevedoring Services of America, the 4th largest port operator in the world; Panama Ports (member of Hutchinson Ports Holding Group and the 2nd largest port operator in the world) and Evergreen International, the second largest shipping line in the world. ICF Kaiser, one of the world's largest construction companies, has just started construction on a large container facility on the pacific side as well. More than 13,000 ships transit the Canal every year and with the reversion of the Canal Zone, many projects are being evaluated in these areas to develop a cluster of maritime and Canal related services that will cater to the needs of the shipping industry. Within this sovereign strategy of creating in Panama the first container transshipment center in Latin America, projected to become the 15th largest in the world, Braswell anticipates playing a key role in providing an array of maritime services to increasing ship traffic in the Canal area.
