Wallem's history spans three centuries: a young Norwegian by the name of Haakon Johan Wallem arrived in Shanghai in 1897 to take up work as a shipbroker. He founded Wallem in 1903 in Shanghai and 100 years later, in a new century and millennium, Wallem are celebrating 100 years of shipping business, no longer based in Shanghai, but in Hong Kong, Asia's world city in between Singapore, Shanghai, the Pearl River Delta and the rest of Asia. The modern Wallem is one of the most all-round shipping groups in the world. Oil Majors know Wallem for its ship management skills when it comes to tankers: oil-, chemical-, products- and gastankers. The largest ship in the world, the tanker "Jahre Viking" is managed by Wallem. Bulkcarrier operators know that Wallem has a large fleet of bulkers in management and part ownership. Major container shipping companies entrust their container ships to Wallem Shipmanagement. Yet there is more to the Wallem Group. As shipbrokers Wallem handle the chartering and Sale & Purchase of mainly bulkcarriers from handy size up to capesize. Wallem's participation in the ownership of some handy size bulkcarriers gives the company inside knowledge of the markets. To all shipping companies in the world Wallem is known for its Agency network, covering all major ports in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore, with Indonesia and Malaysia to be a valuable part of this Agency Network soon. More than 5,600 people work on Wallem managed ships and in Wallem offices around the world. Many well known names in the international business that is shipping have started their career with Wallem or have been associated with Wallem. Already in 1908 Wallem were managing ships owned by other companies, even after they were sold to another party through Wallem, acting as shipbrokers. No other ship management company in the world today can claim such a long experience in shipmanagement. Wallem's Centenary is a stepping stone into the future. As long as ships will be used for essential transport by sea, Wallem will provide service to the shipping industry. Worldwide. Wallem Worldwide Rob Grool Managing Director Wallem Group Ltd.
