BUE Viking Limited was formed in 2002 from the merger of two businesses, BUE North Sea Limited and Viking Standby (Holdings) Limited. The merger took place on 24th September 2002, which effectively created the largest dedicated Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel owner and operator in the world. The Company at its evolution operate a combined fleet of 52 vessels ranging from purpose built large multi-roled field support vessels, to converted trawlers and whalers. However the primary role of all vessels is to provide a good prospect of rescue and recovery for the personnel onboard offshore installations whilst travelling to or from and whilst carrying out their routine business on site. This requirement for good prospect originates from the approved code of practice in relation to the 1995 Prevention of Fire, Explosion and Emergency Response (PFEER) regulations issued by the UK Government. The PFEER regulations in conjunction with the Manning and Administration Regulations (MAR) and Design and Construction (DCR) Regulations, are the key pieces of legislation that implement the findings and recommendations of Lord Cullen, who presided over the Piper Alpha Disaster inquiry. This good prospect in reality equates to the ability to rescue personnel from the sea and recover them to a place of safety, in all but the most severe of weather conditions, within prescribed survival time limits.
