Login The year of establishment, 1845, was the time of the sailing vessels, and the life of a shipbroker, privileged or not, was hard and required physical endeavor by the broker and his clerks. Vessels calling at Bergen were intercepted out in the fjord by the broker's staff, often in tough competition. The first broker to board from his rowing boat, would win the agency assignment and proceed with customs formalities and procedures. The means of communication were scarce, when available at all, and Jurgen Chr. Jurgensen had to spend months of travelling to build up contacts, leaving his business under the responsibility of the managing clerk. As all shipbrokers of his time, Mr Jurgensen held his position by the Broker Law of 1818, under which the profession until 1885 was guarded by civil privileges. Jurgensen's successors, Ferdinand Anton de Fine Berg in 1863 and Ole Reinert Olsen in 1873 , also started as privileged brokers. Ole R Olsen was born in Bergen on 1st May 1841 and joined the business of Ferdinand A de Fine Berg as a young man in 1858. On de Fine Berg's death in 1873 , Ole R Olsen was accepted and authorized as shipbroker. Two years later he changed the name of the business to Ole R Olsen.
