Lorentzen & Stemoco AS is a fully integrated and independent shipbroking and consulting company active in most major sectors of the shipping markets. A team of about 73 highly skilled personnel service clients on a 24 hour basis from offices in Oslo, Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing. We seek and cultivate long-term client relationships and aim to be a discussion partner in strategic planning for our customers by providing consultancy with a strong focus on technical and commercial advice. We pride ourselves in providing unbiased consultancy to all our correspondents with the view to become our clients extended arm within the fields of contracting, sales and purchase and chartering. Dry Cargo Department The Dry Cargo Department advises clients within all the regular bulk segments from handy/handymax to panamax and capesize. The department has considerable expertise in arranging contracts of affreightments and spot contracts within a wide range of commodities on a worldwide basis. The scope of activities range from the most sophisticated cargo handling operations to the conventional bulk cargoes. On the basis of longstanding relationships with large international traders and charterers, we have extended the clientbase worldwide.We concentrate on developing selected geographical areas where the main bulk commodity traders seek assistance in solving their transportation requirements. With our representation in Singapore, business opportunities in the emerging markets of the South Asian region are systematically explored. Lorentzen & Stemoco is one of the world s leading brokerage houses of tanker Forward Freight Agreements (FFAs). Derivatives are becoming more and more accepted as risk management tools in the shipping community, and we are therefore expanding our FFA desk in order to improve the service to our clients even further. The close ties between our research and futures departments enable us to provide our clients with superior advice and support in their decision-making process. We have a diverse pool of customers ranging from ship-owners, oil companies, refiners, hedge funds and private investors. In an effort to provide even better liquidity to our clients, we have formed a joint venture with Mallory, Jones, Lynch, Flynn & Associates of Stamford, Connecticut. This partnership will provide valuable synergy to our operations as well as a broader customer base. Gas Department As a truly independent market participant within the gas field, we have built up a competitive edge within all sectors and all size segments of the liquefied petroleum and chemical gas markets. The department provides a full-scale service to its clients comprising of traditional spot and period chartering, contract of affreightments, sale and purchase as well as contracting of newbuildings.Our gas market activities are not limited to traditional services, but also include the sale of products on an international basis. Our emphasis is on providing creative and non-traditional solutions to the small family of clients within this segment. The department aims at establishing intimate relations with its customers in order to pre-empt or even create their requirements. These activities have resulted in a number of newbuilding contracts often concluded on the basis of long term period employment. LNG Department The LNG market has for the last 5 years developed at an increasing speed. Until about 5 years ago the market was quite limited in the number of players and projects. This is about to change. As a result of this Lorentzen & Stemoco has decided to utilize the expertise generated from the LPG, Offshore and Research activities to develop services within what we call the "floating LNG transportation chain". The "floating LNG transportation chain" covers: 1. Floating LNG production and storage 2. LNG and CNG sea transportation and 3. Floating LNG receiving terminals. Our activities cover both technical and commercial/financial aspects of the projects. Part of our business is to keep an extensive network of contacts involved in one way or other in the above activities as sub-contractors or concept providers. Due to the expected increasing activities in LNG consumption and trades, increased focus is being given to cost cutting measures and concepts. We make it our business to understand and evaluate these. Offshore/Projects department The Project / Offshore department is primarily engaged in arranging newbuilding or conversion contracts for specialized vessels for the offshore industry. Specialized bowloading tankers, drilling / production vessels or rigs as well as conventional tankers and bulkcarriers are featured on the long list of contracts concluded by this department. The department works with a wide array of ship owners, offshore contractors and shipyards. It is staffed with experienced personnel, with a background in either mechanical engineering or naval architecture. A high level of technical knowledge combined with solid commercial experience has resulted in a number of new constructions where innovative technical solutions often have originated from the desk. On the basis of comprehensive technical and commercial knowledge, the department often acts as a strategic discussion partner. Such work often involves assisting the client in carrying out contract specifications and selecting a shipyard on the basis of the customer s requirements. Project management often involves precise evaluation of offers on behalf of the customer and we take an active and creative part in negotiating and closing contracts. Active follow up during the construction phase is considered an integrated part of the service. With a strategic position in the highly complex and capital intensive offshore markets, we intend to expand our activities in the years to come. Consulting department The consulting department produces, on a regular basis, market reports comprising of extensive statistical and analytical information and qualified comments on the market situation. These reports are produced on the basis of information and data received from external consultants and from the various departments within the organization. Complex modeling systems are used to create market forecasts for the main dry bulk and tanker markets. A range of statistical and forecasting services is offered to our main customers as part of the regular service. The department also handles more comprehensive requests for extensive tailor-made analysis or presentations. We possess the necessary information and data to evaluate the commercial viability of a particular vessel design. Such analysis may include financial evaluation, consequential analysis and commercial evaluation of a particular vessel design. The department regularly advises the in-house departments on the outlook for the various market sectors, as well as undertaking extensive consulting work for existing and new clients. Sale & Purchase The Sale & Purchase department advises a wide range of clients in connection with the contracting of newbuildings or the selling or buying of second-hand vessels. The department has expertise within a wide range of vessels, from all categories of liquid and dry bulk carriers to RORO and container vessels. An extensive network provides the desk with a constant flow of business proposals, which in turn is presented to clients on a tailor-made basis. Assisted by the in-house market research services and intimate knowledge of the cyclical nature of shipping, the team advises existing, as well as potential, clients on the timing of acquisitions or disposals of tonnage. The department organizes pre-purchase inspections of ships nd plays an active part in commercial negotiations to bring the parties to an agreement. Long term employment in the form of bareboat or timecharter is often an important element in a deal engineered by this department. Well-developed relations with financial institutions and solid knowledge of legal and fiscal matters have enabled us to assist clients in choosing the optimal solution for a particular investment. We always seek new and creative approaches for each deal passed by us or invented in-house. Tankers department The Clean Tank Department provides specialised services to owners and charterers within the petroleum products, edible oils, solvents and chemicals market. With particular emphasis on the North European trades, we are servicing all sectors of the market ranging from the smallest coastal tankers to the largest modern long haul product carriers. Through its longstanding relations with key oil companies and charterers, our dedicated team has gained significant expertise in arranging and operating complex contract of affreightments as well as long term period charters. Substantial resources are allocated to assist our clients in their planning, scheduling and post fixture work. Operation department In our company, post fixture services are paramount.
