ContinentalShipyard Ltd, a Ship building, repairs and offshore construction divisionactivities shall be planned and executed in such a way as to: - - Ensure good community relations and liaison making life more meaningfuland comfortable to the inhabitants of the community in which they operate. - Avoid injury and pursue the safety and Health of its employees, those ofits contractors and any member of the public that could beaffected. - Minimize the impact on Environment in which Continental Shipyardoperates. - Ensure the security of life and property of its employees, those ofthe contractors and members of the public. - Every Continental Shipyard Ltd employee must plan and perform his or herduties in accordance with this policy; activities must be suspended when anyemployee believes that their work cannot be continued in accordance with thispolicy. Itis their responsibility to report this immediately to their direct supervisor. ENVIRONMENTALPOLICY TheEnvironmental policy of Continental Shipyard Ltd is to formulate and implementprocedures, which avoid adverse impact on our environment, and to investigatethose impacts, which are unavoidable. This policy also strives to conserve andenhance whenever possible the resources of our environment. It sthe company s policy to -Comply with all applicable Nigerian National environmental laws and regulations -Maintain a self-monitoring programme to ensure continued compliance -Assist all levels of government in the promulgation and revision ofenvironmental protection regulations based on scientific facts that areeconomically and Operational feasible. - Assume that the expense of environmental protection is a legitimate cost of conducting business in a modern society - Achieve environmental protection by employing the best control mechanisms, processes and procedures which have been proven technically sound and economical feasible. - Train our employees to be aware of the impact of their assignment on the environmental protection at their level. It is the goal of Continental Shipyard Ltd to make the company s activities harmonious with the environment as it exists. Our environmental philosophy is explicit; no task will be undertaken unless it can be accomplished in an environmentally sound manner and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Compromising environmental Laws in company or Sub-Contractor operations will not be tolerated. It is expected that all company and Sub-contractor employees will actively support this environmental policy and accept environmental protection as an integral part of his or her responsibility. Fireman in Action SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY Continental Shipyard Ltd has a policy on drug and alcohol abuse. Under this policy, alcohol impairment shall be defined as blood alcohol content of 40mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood or greater. All employees of Continental Shipyard Ltd may be subject to drug/Alcohol testing and screening at random and without warning in addition to routine medical examinations. An objective of the policy is that the frequency of the random/unannounced testing shall be adequate to act as an effective deterrent and that all employees be tested a minimum of once a year through either random testing or routine medical examination. It is understood that an actual impairment or any test finding of impairment shall not in itself mean that Continental Shipyard Ltd has failed to exercise due diligence. Continental Shipyard Ltd acknowledge the importance of non-alcohol/drug abuse in the safety and efficiency of its operations, therefore compliance forms an integral part of all daily activities. Search for and seizure of drugs and alcohol may be against individual employees or Continental Shipyard Ltd property and in any event shall be unannounced. SPEECH BY MD OF CONTINENTAL SHIPYARD LIMITED Ladies and gentlemen, we bid you welcome to Continental Shipyard Ltd. A special welcome to our Board members and Mr. Hughes and Mr. Reynolds from BSI South Africa. Today we celebrate the conferment with the ISO 9002 certification requirements. An extraordinary achievement for a company, which only started in May 1996. Up to January of this year 55 vessels were repaired and /or docked. Of this number, time wise, 80% concerned NPA vessels, among which some very big jobs, some of which are still ongoing like the two floating cranes Kugbo and Kakube . In the first four months of this year we have had already four vessels from third parties, fixed orders for the remainder of the year for 12 more third vessels and numerous requests for many more, which we cannot handle. So we must be doing something good. This means CSL has to perform at very high, international standards. We have to comply with the requirements of the classification bureau s (Lloyds, BV, ABS, US Coastguard). More and more we notice that foreign vessel owners insist that their vessels are docked and surveyed at a shipyard, which has this ISO 9002 certificate, which in the offshore industry has already been a requirement for many years. In fact we are negotiating a contract to rebuild an oilrig for early next year. BSI ( British Standard Institute) in the person of Mr. Tom Hughes has been a tremendous coach and teacher to us and this showed. In the first two months of this year we were able to conclude the work and ask for a final audit, which we passed and with this celebration as a result! A giant step in the right direction, but only a first of many still to come. The vast amount of work needed, was not done by one man alone. However to honor those who were involved I would like to introduce to you our Quality Manager who coordinated, chased and motivated everybody Mr. Faruk Usman. This motto became our policy Quality is never good enough and cost is never low enough . With this we are on the way to become the dockyard in West Africa.
