It is situated on the point where the major maritime routes meet, uniting Europe with Asia and Africa. The central port is operated as an overseas passenger terminal and every year more than 11 million passengers pass through the port, from whom one million or more are overseas tourists. The port is linked wit the underground of Athens thus enabling the tourists travelling on their own to visit the ancient monuments and museums of the wider area. In view of the year 2004 in which the country will host the Olympic games, is expected to play a significant role. The commercial port is developing at the areas of Ikonion and Drapetsona. A modern container terminal is in operation and is considered the biggest in the entire of Balkan area. There are also two car terminals covering a significant portion of the country s imports as well as trans-shipments between vessels. In the neighbourhood of Piraeus there are several shipyards installed, while a number of shipbuilding industries, steel factories and machine shops are running within the city. It is worth of nothing that Piraeus is host to a market of ships stores and supplies and a number of shipping activities, such as fuel bunker supply, dry docks and ship repairs.
