Hamburg Location: 53 33 N 9 58 E The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is a muinicipatlity as well as one of sixteen federal States of Germany. Vessels have to approach Hamburg from North Sea or Kiel Canal on River Elbe. Restrictions for the vessels are governed by their actual loading- and/or discharging berths. Special regulations for restrictions are applicable for passing the Kiel Canal. Hamburg is located about 75 sm from the North Sea, the Port of Hamburg is accessible for large vessels. On approach from North Sea, an uninterrupted chain of radar stations and buoys and tug assistances ensure that the port is navigable at any time, even at poor visibility. The total port area covers an area of 7,425 ha, whereof the freeport area is 1,620 ha.
