The container berths in Hai Phong port are equipped with shore cranes and loading/unloading equipment. There is a storage capacity of 1,000,000 m3 for general cargo. Tanker berth has tanks for 10,000t of oil. Ballast or slop reception is available. Tugs are available at 1x3,000hp, 3x1,200hp and 5x500hp. The port of Hai Phong's main exports include rice, maize, tin, other ores, cement and timber. The principal imports are machinery, petroleum products, preserved goods, wines and spirits. The port of Hai Phong has 15 marine moorings available for vessels up to 15,000 dwt. 2 of the berths are for bulk cargo, 2 berths are for containers and general cargo and 11 berths for general cargo. There is 1 tanker berth for vessels up to 3,000t and 1 Ro-Ro berth. Hai Phong port can be approached between Do Son Peninsula and Xuy Nong Chao. There are two channels leading to Hai Phong port, Cua Cam which lies NE of Don Son Peninsula and Cua Cam Trieu, 3nm further NE. Cua Cam Trieu is the principal channel and is connected to Cua Cam by Canal Maritime. Hai Phong port operates 24 hours a day with 3 shifts. Hai Phong is located on the S Side of Cua Cam, at the mouth of Song Thai Binh. Its coordinates are Latitude 20 52'N and Longitude 106 41'E. Hai Phong is a natural harbour, improved by dredging with widths from 2,275 2,675 m. It is easily accessible with the nearest airport, Noibai International which is only 130 km away. Hai Phong airport is also available for domestic use. The nearest railway is situated 1 km from Hai Phong port. Hai Phong port handled approximately 1,800 vessels and 3,000,000t of cargoes annually. As of now, the maximum vessel size that has been handled is 200m for LOA and 26m for Beam. An upgrading of the port is underway and the port expects to be able to handle ships of up to 10,000t on completion in 2004.
