There are three ports along itslength with 310 metres double locks at each end, which allow convoys of amaximum six 3,000 tonne barges and seagoing ships of up to 5,000 dwt. The current maximum capacity ofthe port is 85 million tonnes per year, of which 36.3 million tonnes is liquidbulk, 25.7 million tonnes solid bulk and 22.5 million tonnes is break-bulk andgeneral cargo. The total surface area of the port is 3,626 hectares. The maximumside of ship that can enter port is 165,000 dwt/draught 17.8 metres. Terminal 1 Depths: 3.3 17.6 meters There are 13 berths for handling ore, coal and coke. Three of these berthsare specially equipped for transhipment of bulk cargo from seagoing to rivervessels. Cargo is discharged by two 50 tonne and six 20 tonne unloaders.Handling from quayside to barge is by four loaders of 1,200 to 2,000 tonnes/hourcapacity. There are also quay cranes, floating cranes, conveyors andstacker/reclaimers for stockpiled bulk cargo. The terminal has a total storage capacity of 4.5 million tonnes. Terminal 2 Depths: 6.4 10.7 meters There are nine berths equipped with two 25 tonne unloaders for dischargingphosphate and apatite, plus two unloaders one of 200tonnes/hour and one of 250tonnes/hour capacity, plus 17 quay cranes. There is a 30,000 tonnes capacity silo for storage of phosphate and a 25,000tonnes silo for urea. The terminal has a total storage capacity of 48,000 tonnes. Packed chemicalproducts are stored in eight covered warehouses. Terminal 3 Depths: 8.0 12.9 meters There are nine berths for the handling of building materials. Bulk cementinto seagoing vessels either directly from barges or from a 40,000 tonnecapacity storage area. Handling is by two 400 tonnes/hour unloaders. Two floating loaders with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes/hour are available fortranshipment from barges. Quay cranes and bagging machinery are also available. Terminal 4 Depths: 7.8 10.8 meters There are six grain handling berths. Loading and unloading is by eight 150tonnes/hour pneumatic elevators and two aspiration elevators of 250 tonnes/hourcapacity. In addition, there are two 300 tonnes/hour plus quay cranes andunderground and overhead conveyors. The grain berths have a maximum handling capacity of 250,000 tonnes per monthwith a storage capacity of 90,000 tonnes in three silos. Liquid Bulks Berths: 8 Principal commodities: oil, edibles oils and molasses Terminal 1 Depths: 11.8 17.6 meters The oil terminal has a dual role, handling the import of crude oil and theexport of refined oil products, petrochemicals and chemical products. There are six berths with a depth alongside of between 11.8 and 17.6 meters,plus one berth with a depth of 19 meters for tankers of up to 165,000 dwt. Berths are equipped with 12 and 16 inch Woodfield and Flexider couplinginstallations as well as fire-fighting and pollution control equipmentincluding skimmers and booms. The terminal has 1.7 million cubic metres of tank storage. Terminal 2 Depth: 7.2 metres Length: 114 metres One berth. Edible oil is discharged by pipeline into seven tanks, each of25,000 tonnes capacity. Molasses is discharged from vessels direct to tankwagons. ContainerTerminal Depth: 10.20 meters Length: 232 meters The container terminal is located in the North Port. There is one berthsupported by a three hectare storage yard. Ship-to-shore handling is by two 40.7tonne gantry cranes and yard movements by two 32 tonnes transtainers, plus sideloaders and fork-lift trucks. There are two adjacent parking areas for embarking and disembarking vehicleswith capacity of 120 x 12 metres long vehicles. Car Terminals Depth: 10.8 meters There are two car terminals; located in the North Port and South Port. Both terminals have two berths together with a parking area of four hectares. General Cargo Terminal Depth: 7.2 11.8 metres There are 25 berths handling a range of general cargo including cotton,timber, metal products, industrial equipment, refrigerated and non industrialfoodstuffs. Cargo is handled by quay cranes, fork-lift trucks and trailers. The terminalhas 10,000 square metres of cold store capacity together with 30 hectares ofcovered storage and 190 hectares of open storage. Barges The port's direct access to the Danube-Black Sea Canal has let tohighly developed facilities for barge traffic. There are purpose-built vesselsof 1,000-1,500-2,000 and 3,000 tonnes capacity for carrying a wide variety ofdry and bulk cargoes such as ore, coal, appetite, cement, rolled metals andgrain as well as liquid bulk, particularly oil.
