Everyday, PSA Corporation handles more than 40,000 containers at its terminals in Singapore. At any one time, some 800 ships and 150,000 containers are in Port. There are just some of the scenes that depict Singapore as the world s busiest port in terms of shipping, cargo tonnage and container throughput. It also ranks as the world s top bunkering port. Besides hosting 146,265 vessels with a shipping tonnage of 960 million gross tons and handling 15.6 million TEUs and 313.3 million tonnes of cargo in 2001, Singapore also supplied 20.4 million tonnes of bunker in the same year. In 2000, close to 6.9 million cruise passengers used the International Passenger Terminal. These statistics are a testimony to the attractiveness and vibrancy of Singapore as a port. Its inherent appeal of being strategically located at the crossroads of major shipping routes has been augmented by it s highly level of computerization, state-of-the-art port facilities, cost-effective services and superb logistical support and infrastructure. Dry Docking / Shipyards Singapore's shipyards have developed a reputation for servicing some of the world's finest cruise ships, which call at the Port of Singapore for dry docking as well as refurbishment. Apart from dryd ocking services, general and damage repairs, the major shipyards have also taken on more and more higher value-added, diverse and complex conversions and sophisticated upgrading contracts. The industry will continue to remain as a niche player in building customized and specialised vessels. The ability of the local shipyards to undertake fast track projects with quick turnaround and to compete on less price-sensitive products and services, in areas where quality safety and timely delivery are of paramount important, has enabled the industry to compete and maintain its position as a leading and preferred centre in certain niche areas in the global market. Conventional Terminals Conventional Cargo is handled by three terminals at: - Pasir Panjang Wharves Sembawang Wharves Jurong Port PSA s Multi-Purpose Terminal (MPT) is made up of the Pasir Panjang Wharves (PPW) and Sembawang Wharves (SW). The MPT handles general and break-bulk cargo and containers, forming the vital link between suppliers and importers of raw materials, semi-manufactured and manufactured products. The MPT also offers warehouse space to serve as Consolidated Distribution Centres (CDCs) for the consolidation and distribution of goods within the Free Trade Zone. Break-bulk goods discharged at any of MPT s two wharves can also be packed into containers and transshipped via the container terminals. Today, Jurong Port continues to be a key bulk and conventional cargo gateway in Singapore, with 23 berths serving over 7,000 vessels every year. The Port is also into container handling with super post-panamax quay crane and rubber-tyre gantry cranes within its premises. The terminal is also well supported by a modern Container Terminal Management System. Strategically located at the crossroads of the Asia Pacific region, Jurong Port is Singapore's only dry bulk cargo-handling port and price as: o The world's largest common-user cement terminal, with a capacity in excess of 4 million tonnes a year. o Singapore's largest multi-storey, drive-up warehouse - Jurong Logistics Hub. o Singapore's deepest berth depth of up to 16 metres, can accommodate vessels of up to 150,000 deadweight tonnes. The port has also developed extensive network of pipelines and conveyor systems to offer efficient and quick discharge of bulk commodities from berths to nearby storage facilities. Container Terminals Four container terminals, namely Tanjong Pagar Terminal Keppel Terminal Brani Terminal Pasir Panjang Container Terrminal Handles the containerized cargo that comes into Singapore. They cover a total of 339 ha, and consist of 20 main berths and 17 feeder berths, 64,322 ground slots and 119 quay cranes. A new mega terminal is being constructed at Pasir Panjang to cope with increased regional cargo flow. Phase 1 of four berths is fully operational.
