The port has facilities both on the island and on the mainland. The port in Penang island handles mostly on cruise liners, whilst the mainland port handles and provides facilities which includes: Butterworth Wharves North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) Bulk Cargo Terminal, Prai (BCT) Vegetable Oil Tanker Pier, Prai (VOTP) Dangerous Cargo Berth, Prai (DGB) Port: Penang Port Sdn Bhd Authority: Penang Authority Position: Latitude 5 35.53' N, Longitude 100 12.22' E BA Chart: 3732, 1366 Tidal Range: 1.6 minimum 2.9 maximum For navigation approach purposes, the North Channel Light Float is in the position, latitude 5 35.9' N, longitude 100 12.45' E for vessels entering the harbour through the North Channel. Vessels awaiting for pilot can anchor at North Channel. In the Pilot waiting area within the following coordinates: - Latitude 5 35.8' N and Longitude 100 10.9' E Latitude 5 34.3' N and Longitude 100 10.9' E Latitude 5 32.7' N and Longitude 100 34.2' E Latitude 5 34.2' N and Longitude 100 13.0' E An approach channel of 10 nautical miles x 183 m wide for 1 line of traffice has been dredged at the North Channel. The available depth of water at the channel is periodically declared to port users. Current depth available is 10.4 m ACD. For entry through the South Channel, the Pilot will be taken on board in vicinity of Rimau Wreck Buoy 1.6 km South of Pulau Rimau Lighthouse. Access through the South Channel is restricted to vessels of 28 m air draft due to existence of the Penanag Bridge. Current depth of 5.8 m ACD. The Man of War, Petroluem, Quarantine, Explosive and local vessels anchorages are marked on Charts of the Penang Harbour (AC No. 3732). There is no specific anchorage area in the harbour of vessels other than mentioned above. The other vessels are normally anchored south of latitude 5 26' N and north of latitude 5 22.8' N. Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels navigating in pilot district of Penang with exception of fishing vessels and vessels of 600 GRT and below.
