The Port of Nynashamn Ferry traffic at Nynashamn continues to show a steady increase. The number of passengers to and from Gotland increased by 9 per cent and to and from Poland by 17 per cent between 1998 and 1999. Freight to Poland increased by 50 per cent in 1999. One reason for this is that Polferries stopped calling at Oxelosund in June 1999 and moved all traffic to Nynashamn. One million passengers in 2000 Passenger traffic via the port at Nynashamn reached over one million in 2000. And during last year, 2001, the distribution between Gotland and Poland was about 935,000 passengers to and from Gotland and about 132,000 passengers to and from Poland. A look at the previous statistics for the Port of Nynashamn shows that the number of passengers travelling to and from Gotland has increased by about 300,000 during the last ten year period. Fast ferry to Visby Capacity on the services to Gotland increased in 1999 when a brand new, fast, single-hulled, high-speed ferry, designed for the Baltic, was taken into service. With its 35 knots, this new fast ferry covers the distance between Nynashamn and Visby in as little as 2 hours and 50 minutes. More cruise liners In 1999, two cruise line companies decided that Nynashamn should be a new destination in 2000 for a part of the international cruise liner traffic. This applies to those cruise liners that are so big that they need special dispensation to call at Stockholm. During the summer of 2001, Nynashamn was host of 11 such calls with a total of 32,000 passengers. Road to Norvik The construction of the new approach road to Nynashamn, with a grade-separated intersection for the planned port at Norvik, started in 1999. The new road will be ready in 2001, which is a couple of years earlier than originally planned by Vagverket (the National Road Administration). Moving the construction forward was the result of cooperation between Nynashamns Hamn AB, the Municipality of Nynashamn and Vagverket. This means that the Port and the Municipality will share the interest payments on the money that Vagverket had to borrow in order to start the construction of Road 73 two years earlier than anticipated. The Port of Nynashamn is a modern ro-ro port situated 60 km south of Stockholm. The port is well protected by islands and also has a good entrance channel. The Port of Nynashamn is ideally situated for ferry traffic to the central and southern Baltic. Stockholm is reached within an hour by bus, car or train. Ferry traffic at Nynashamn continues to show a steady increase. Port of Nynashamn (Sweden) - Nynashamns Hamn AB
