The Port of Kapellskar Incredible increase at Kapellskar There has been a substantial increase in freight traffic at Kapellskar over the past few years. FinnLink has been running for some years now and and has a market share of 33% of the total ferry traffic between Sweden and Finland. In November 1999 this operator introduced a larger ro-ro ferry for freight only to and from Finland. Kapellskar is also the port from which Hansaliin operates its services to Paldiski in Estonia. Expansion at Kapellskar In order to adapt the port for larger vessels, the storage areas have been expanded. A new dolphin has been built at the port pier s extension. Vessels as long as 200 m can now berth at the port. One of the old movable ramps was replaced by a new one. In addition the offices in the terminal have been rebuilt, renovated and expanded for the Port s customers. In 1999 we started planning and design work in connection with the redistribution of the premises for customs and passport controls which is required by the Schengen Agreement. More land for the Port In 1999 Stockholms Hamn AB bought about 800,000 sq m (80 hectares) of land at Kapellskar from the local county council, mainly to be used as a buffer zone to the surrounding area. Towards the end of the year new agreements with the tenants in the area came into effect, mainly with owners of older summer houses and a caravan site which is used all year round. 100 employees In high season the Port of Kapellskar employs about 100 people, 20 of whom are employed by Roslagshamnar AB och the rest by the Customs Office, the Police Office and the Shipping Companies. Rapid development Development of traffic at Kapellskar has been very fast. As late as the summer of 1996 the entire traffic consisted of two daily sailings to Aland. In that autumn the first line was started inland. In October 1997 services started to Estonia. In 2002 there have been 6-9 daily arrivals at the port. With its short entrance channel and its good road links the port is important for rapid freight transport to and from Finland. There are also daily services to Aland from Kapellskar.
