London,UK, since 1998, is the leading company for cargo handling, storage and logistics in Rostock. From 1 January 2003 the company shows a changed structure and a new profile. A longterm job security, competitiveness and a better costs saving were the reasons to establish seven separate limited companies for cargo handling and services under the roof of SHRU. SHRU is equipped with efficient cargo handling facilities and modern quays for oil, grain, ore, coal, building materials and general cargo, for RoRo transport and large storage capacity. Its infrastructure with its connections to the hinterland by rail, road and motorways (A19 and A20), its pipelines and the easy access for large ships make Rostock port the handling and trade centre of the Baltic region. Services Grain, fertilizer In this part of the port four berths are available for the import and export of grain, fertilizer, oil seed and malt, two of the berths are for ships of a tonnage of up to 100,000 tdw. The grain terminal has a ship loader loading 1,000 tons per hour and two ship loaders handling 300 tons per hour. A linked conveyor belt system enables the transport of grain from the storehouses to the ships. The capacity of the grain silos is 400,000 tons. Feeding troughs for lorries and railway wagons allow a speedy unloading of grain. The fertilizer quay is equipped with a ship loader (1,000 t/h), a wagon discharging station, a conveyor belt system and two special halls for fertilizer with a storing capacity of 60,000 tons. The nearby Malteurop malt factory transforms barley into malt. The by-products are fodder of a high value. The barley comes from the largest brewery barley producing regions of northern Europe in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The barley and fodder grain is put ashore via two stationary pneumatic jacks. The import of barley and the export of malt is managed by a combined transport system between the port-owned silos and the malt factory. In 2002 the grain/ fertilizer terminal handled three million tons of cargo. Dry bulk, ore, coal This part of the port handles ore, hard coal and various building materials at four berths. Large open air storage areas are available: 360,000 tons of ore and 240,000 tons of coal can be stored here. Furthermore there are a sea gravel store, a storage for building materials and a cement terminal with silo. 35,000 t of ore and 20,000 t of coal can be handled daily. The ore wagons for the industry and for the power plant near the port are loaded by four powerful reclaimers and two conveyor belts. The ore wagon loading station has a capacity of 800 t/h and allows the loading of a whole train within 2.5 hours. The conveyor and loading systems are controlled and monitored from a modern computer-assisted control centre. Bunker gantry cranes are used for the unloading of building materials. Sea gravel processing, mixing of asphalt and a dry mortar mixing also take place on the premises. General cargo, quay, storage The Hansa Quay with its 13 berths is the most multifacetted part of the port. This is where conventional and break-bulk cargo is handled as well as steel, natural stones, plaster carton boards and heavy loads are handled. Scrap and sugar at special terminals. The sugar comes by freight train or lorry and is sacked, put on pallets and stored at a speed of 150 or 70 t/h or is directly loaded into the ship via conveyor belt at 120 t/h. The storage capacity is 50,000 t. Three quay sheds having rail and road links on both the water and the shore side can store sugar in sacks, high-grade finished steel and other delicate goods. A number of heavy-load cranes (hoisting power up to 50 t) enable the handling of heavy unit weights, especially steel and scrap, at high speed. Tramp ships going overseas are mainly served here. At the Hansa quay value adding takes place by means of various processing services. A total of 1 million tons was handled here in 2002. Paper, forest products Between 1991 and 2002 more than 3.5 million tons of printing paper from Finland, Scandinavia and Russia have been handled via Rostock, today nearly half a million tons per year, getting increasingly. Paperhandling for a port is not only a lucrative but also a demanding business. Most modern fork - lift trucks and intelligent paper clamp equipment, bar code scanning and excellent warehousing are the preconditions. For nearly 12 years now SHRU works for the Finnish WARICO/UPM-Kymmene Sales branch in Rostock, which realised a total amount of 2.7 million tons imported Finnish printing paper by 31 December 2002. For the first time in August 2002 there are also fortnightly paper export shipments to USA via Rostock. After purchasing the WARICO/UPM-Kymmene 10,000 qm paper shed by SHRU, together with shed no.7 and the just opened new shed no.5, there is now a total storage capacity of 30,000 qm for more than 50,000 tons of paper available. With effect from 1 January 2003 the PLU Papier-Lager-und Umschlaggesellschaft mbH will be the operator of the paper terminal.
