The mission of the Port of Gdansk is to build the biggest universal port on the Baltic Sea and, at the same time, a major commercial and business distribution hub in Central and Eastern Europe, that will provide top quality services and combine modernity with a thousand year history of the maritime trade of Gdansk and the Polish State. As from the Amber Route, through the Hanzeatic League until the trans-European transport corridor, Gdansk has linked the north with the south and the west with the east of the continent. The Port has shaped the phenomenon of Gdansk, the city as a gateway to the world, with its richness in terms of history, science and culture. Likewise the future of the Port is focused on cooperation with the city and on measures to be jointly embarked on by the Port Authority and the City Mayor of Gdansk. An opportunity for the Port of Gdansk lies not only in its versatile character, but also in its strategic role as far as the national transport policy objectives are concerned. The city of Gdansk and the Port make up a remarkably significant link in Trans-European Transport Corridor No 6. Poland's accession to the European Union has afforded further opportunities for taking advantage of EU assistance funds and implementing projects aimed at upgrading port infrastructure. The Port of Gdansk is an active beneficiary of that aid, thus participating in the implementation of a number of projects. The Port offers attractive investment opportunities. The ground situated in the Northern Port will soon see the construction of a deepsea container terminal and, subsequently, a logistics and distribution centre. These wide-ranging developments are set to dominate the contemporary image of the Port. It is my strong belief and conviction that reading of this website will provide basis for realizing that the Port of Gdansk is fit to respond to new challenges and expectations of its business partners ensuring, at the same time, the dynamic growth and consolidation of its position in the years to come. The Port of Gdansk Authority SA had been subject to a comprehensive review carried out by the National Chamber of Commerce - the largest business self-governing organization in Poland. The awarded Certificate provides the evidence of due diligence in terms of developing proper relations within all areas that had been examined during the programme procedure: it confirms honesty and reliability of the Company in its approach to Clients, respect of the competition, timely performance of obligations towards the State Treasury, responsive attitude to the needs of the local community, friendly attitude towards the environment, participation in charity events, providing employees with conditions conducive to the efficient work as well as their career development. In other words, it amounts to the responsible business activity carried out to the benefit of all the parties involved - clients, suppliers, shareholders, employees, local communities, competition, local business - jointly building up the company's environs. The programme promoting business culture was initiated by the Port of Gdansk Authority SA in May 2005. During the six months of its implementation, the development of new projects was launched and the initiative and creativity of a large number of employees were boosted. Among the measures taken, there was the implementation of the code of ethics as well as the employee's code of conduct, adopted by the Company Board of Directors on October 14, 2005. The success that has been achieved provides not only the source of satisfaction to the Port of Gdansk Authority SA, but also the inspiration to constantly pursue ideas promoted within the programme. This perspective corresponds with the role of a key link in Trans-European Transport Corridor No 6, which was allocated to the Port of Gdansk by the European Union. Key importance to the Port of Gdansk, the development projects cover land infrastructure facilities and constitute the subject matter of an international project focusing on the motorways of the Baltic Sea. As regards vehicle traffic solutions, projects such as construction of a tunnel under the Dead Vistula, redevelopment of a section of Sucharskiego Street from Ku Ujsciu junction to the suspension bridge across the Dead Vistula and extension of the street to the South Ring Road of Gdansk are under consideration. The core of rail traffic solutions is the redevelopment of a railway track from Northern Port station to Pruszcz Gdanski station, modernisation of Northern Port station and construction of a double track railway bridge across the Dead Vistula. The Port of Gdansk Authority SA makes great efforts so that these facilities can be as soon as possible incorporated in the implementation plans and win adequate financial assistance from the EU funds, National Development Plan and the municipal budget. The major projects involving the development of port, land and water engineering infrastructure comprise a construction of new or modernisation of existing cargo handling and storage terminals. The investments are aimed at the best possible adjusting of the port to handling the expected vessel traffic and cargo volumes. These include: the construction of a container terminal bankrolled from foreign investor's own funds, construction of a logistics and distribution centre and four modernisation projects co-financed from the EU budget under the Sectoral Operational Programme - Transport. Other funds will be provided from the local government resources, the state budget and the Port of Gdansk Authority SA. These projects are situated in the area of Westerplatte Ferry Terminal, Przemyslowe Quay, Port Free Zone and the entrance to that part of the port that stretches along the Vistula estuary. The completion of the projects will enable creating new possibilities for and standards of cargo handling in the port, improve the safety of navigation and road approach to the terminals, benefit the natural environment and provide an economic boost to the development land, thus contributing to an increased employment rate. The investment entails the modernisation of Westerplatte Quay, provision of two berths, enlargement of maneuvering and parking grounds, as well as the redevelopment of a road junction in the terminal's foreground. The undertaking will provide conditions for partially diverting the road traffic from land border crossings. A growth in haulage is expected, including ferry services and short sea shipping, coupled by a positive impact on the efficiency and quality of port operations due to a wide-range introduction of multimodal transport, and also on the environmental protection by creating grounds for partially shifting the transport of goods from roads onto sea. Upon completion of the investment project, the road traffic safety will improve in the vicinity of the terminal and its approach roads. The development will contribute to the revitalizing of economic lands situated in the eastern regions of the port. Access infrastructure to the area of Przemyslowe Quay The project is focused on improving the capacity of a transport system linking Przemyslowe Quay and the port development land with the main transportation thoroughfare of the eastern part of the port i.e. the Sucharski Route, as well as on an increased cargo throughput of Przemyslowe Quay. The project provides for the redevelopment of the quay, construction of a new flyover with a load capacity of 50 tonnes and modernisation of Ku Ujsciu Street. As a result, a direct road approach to the quay area will be provided for heavy duty traffic, which will eliminate the burden from residential districts. Furthermore, conditions will be laid down to ensure the effective use of some 120 ha of port development land. In a long-term perspective, the completion of the project will enable the expansion of cargo handling terminals, logistics and distribution, as well as industrial activity. Improvement of access to the Port Free Zone in the Port of Gdansk The investment aims at increasing the capacity of the Port Free Zone by redeveloping WOC 2 Quay, constructing a steel tilting ramp, providing technological routes, maneuvering and parking grounds, as well redevelopment of the junction at Oliwska-Przemyslowa Streets. This undertaking will expand the number of berths and enable the development of new cargo handling technologies (Ro/Ro), haulage operations and multimodal transportation systems. The redevelopment of the junction (section of the national road no 1) will streamline traffic flows to the Port Free Zone. The project completion is expected to ensure infrastructure conditions that will boost shipping on the Baltic Sea, including Ro/Ro and short sea shipping, and the economic revival set to prevent the falling employment rate in the inner part of the Port of Gdansk. Modernisation of entrance to the Inner Port The Port of Gdansk Authority SA is a partner to the project implemented by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, that pertains to the redevelopment of the Western Breakwater and the widening, at the same time, of the entrance to the port from 72 metres up to 90 metres. The investment is aimed at increasing safety standards of handling 250-metre long and 36-metre wide ships with a draught of 10.6 metres. New parameters of the port entrance will enhance the maximum conditions for vessels docking at wind strength of 8 degrees on the Beaufort scale, whilst the safety index for maneuvering will rise to the mark of 0.99, thus improving the safety at the entrance to the port and reducing environmental hazards. Improved navigation features will speed up inward and outward traffic in the inner part of the Port of Gdansk and permit the docking of large-sized vessels, also in adverse weather conditions. High safety standards of shipping combined with better quality services in terms of reliability, efficiency and timely performance of port operations will bring about the economic revival of the Inner Port. A suitable long-term tenancy contract between the investor and the Port of Gdansk Authority SA was signed in 2004. The implementation of the entire project is broken down into two phases. Phase I provides for the construction of two berths with an overall annual throughput of 500 thou. TEU, of which one berth suited to handling Ro/Ro cargoes. Phase II covers the expansion by further berths with a view to a targeted annual capacity of 1 million TEU. The large proportion of the terminal will be founded on artificially made land. Construction of the container terminal gives raise to a natural demand for the provision of a logistics and distribution centre in its immediate vicinity. Stretching across the vast development lands, the Centre will constitute a facility of vital importance, complementary to the terminal infrastructure and focused on the traffic of goods between the western states of the European Union and Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Favoured with its conducive location, the Centre will be linked to the road network, include A-1 Motorway, and to the railway network. The Centre will play the role of a hub providing a wide range of value added services such as forwarding, distribution, warehousing, storage, packing and unpacking containers, as well as agency, customs and banking services etc. Related events: Official construction launch of the DCT container terminal - 26.10.2005 Construction of the DCT container terminal is getting under way - 27.09.2005 The Implementation of the Largest Investment in the Port of Gdansk - 30.09.2004 The Largest Deepwater Container Terminal in Poland - 29.01.2004 Print Port Authority - About Port - Shipping - Events - Addresses Intro - Polski - Help - Site map - Log in - E-mail contact - Webmaster Top Port of Gdansk Authority SA Trans-European Transport Corridor No 6 Polski | Help | Site map | Log in Friday, 27th of January 2006 Everywhere - Port Authority - About Port - Shipping - Events - Addresses « Help www.portgdansk.pl » About Port » Infrastructure » Trans-European Transport Corridor No 6 General info Terminals and quays » Cargo » Business activity in the port area » Infrastructure » Port development projects Projects under SOP-T Container terminal Trans-European Transport Corridor No 6 Suspension bridge across the Vistula estuary Railway infrastructure Gdansk-Odessa Transportation Corridor Airway Safety and security » Sights of the port Port and its surroundings » TRANS-EUROPEAN TRANSPORT CORRIDOR No 6 Drawn upon Transport Infrastructure Needs Assessment (TINA), the EU binding strategy provides for the Port of Gdansk to be one of the key links of the Trans-European Transport Corridor No 6. Overlapping, to a great extent, the course of the ancient Amber Route, the corridor is, on the one hand, the evidence of the historical role that the Port of Gdansk has played up to the present time in Europe's transportation system, and, on the other hand, a consequence of the recent forecasts concerning the future transportation development trends. Owing to its geographical and market-related location the Port of Gdansk is well-suited for playing the role of a distribution centre oriented towards the Baltic Sea Region, as well as the Central and Eastern European states. At the same time, it comprises a vital link in a transportation chain providing a connection between the Nordic States and the South European States, in particular those in the Adriatic and the Black Sea regions. The trends that can be observed on the European transportation market such as a rapid increase in transportation of freight units (containers), expansion of the ro-ro transport, the necessity to develop combined transportation systems and short sea shipping, as well as a constantly growing traffic congestion on the European roads that calls for the implementation of the idea called "from road to sea" - naturally affect the development of transport corridors. Due to its statutory and legal scope of business activity, the Port of Gdansk Authority SA is directly involved in providing suitable conditions in terms of infrastructure in the area under its management. With a view to the development of Corridor 6 new shipping services operating in the Baltic Sea Region have been launched from the Gdansk Container Terminal and the Westerplatte Ferry Terminal. The major significance, however, lies with the investment plans accompanied by the infrastructure development providing the port with a direct connection to its hinterland. The planned investment projects aim at the best possible level of cohesion between the Port of Gdansk on the one hand and the infrastructure of Corridor 6 and the entire EU transportation network on the other hand. This provides a suitable framework for a concept of developing a railway connection between the ports of Gdansk and Gdynia on the one hand, and the ports of Odessa and Ilychevsk on the other hand. Use of this transportation link enables container cargoes being carried by means of railcars along the route connecting the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea within much shorter time than by a traditional sea shipment. Excellent location of the ports combined with their extensive cargo handling capacity and efficient co-operation with the Polish and Ukrainian railways complement strategic goals of the Polish-Ukrainian partnership. This guarantees suitable grounds for secure cargo delivery to the point of destination in due time. Both European regions are recognized as those boasting most favourable economic development perspectives due to the on-going integration process of the Baltic Sea region states and the Black Sea region states with the European Union and the NATO. This will substantially enhance a sustained growth in commercial turnover with those regions, as well as ensure increasing significance of the Gdansk - Odessa transportation corridor. Apart from grain corn, other grain products handled in the Port comprise feeds, molasses, malt and edible oils. A malt processing plant is located on the Bytomskie Quay . Malt, barley, as well as medical and technical gases are handled at this quay. The quays of the Gorniczy Basin (Rudowe, Weglowe and Administracyjne) are particularly versatile in character. Besides coal and general cargo, they are suited to handling grain, aggregate, iron ore, fertilizers, timber etc. It additionally boasts the largest in Polish ports scrap handling plant. PASSENGER TRAFFIC The historic city of Gdansk along with the medieval Malbork castle located in its close vicinity, as well as the alluring landscapes of Kashubian Switzerland make the Port of Gdansk an attractive destination for passenger ships. Ferry services operate to and from the Polish Baltic Shipping Terminal and a state-of-the-art Westerplatte Ferry Terminal situated on the historic peninsula, within a 15-minute drive of the centre of Gdansk. Well-connected with the national and international road network, the Terminal offers a berth equipped with Ro/Ro ramp, a passenger terminal with administration and office spaces, as well as customs and passport clearance points, a sheltered passage for foot passengers and four-lane customs and passport clearance posts for motor vehicles. Projected investments aim to boost the Terminal's handling capacity of vessels. Westerplatte is one of the mooring berths for cruise liners that are additionally serviced at a representative waterfront along the Captain Ziolkowski Quay and at the Oliwskie Quay tailored to accommodate the largest vessels exceeding 200 metres in length. All those quays have convenient public transport connections with the city centre. Additionally, for countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, the Belarus Republic and Hungary, the Port of Gdansk provides easy access to the Baltic Sea. Favourable hydrographic, political and location conditions of the Port of Gdansk have led to the development of a diverse port infrastructure, giving the port a universal character. The Port of Gdansk is divided into two basic parts. The so called Inner Port, which extends along the Vistula estuary and Port Channel, can accommodate vessels of up to 225 m in length with a maximum draft of 10.2 m. Second part, the Northern Port features piers, quays and cargo handling stations located directly in the water basins of Gulf of Gdansk. The largest vessels that enter the Baltic Sea can be serviced there. Vessels with a capacity of up to 300,000 DWT and a draft up to 15 m can be accommodated along the jetties extending from 220 to 765 m in length. Specialized cargo handling terminals, furnished with efficient and modern cargo handling equipment, operate in the port. Such terminals in the Inner Port are the Gdansk Container Terminal providing feeder services, the Westerplatte Ferry Terminal , the Polferries Ferry Terminal , the liquid and dry bulk sulphur terminal , the phosphates terminal and the fruits handling terminal at the Port Free Zone . The remaining wharves in the Inner Port are universal. It is possible there to handle general cargo and bulk cargo. It is also here that specialized cargo handling equipment and port infrastructure can be found, enabling among others the handling of grain, fertilizers, lumber, ore, steel and containers, as well as ro-ro vessel servicing. Modern handling and storage facilities for such bulk cargo as
