What began in 1960 as a two vessel, two terminal operation has grown into one of the largest, most sophisticated ferry transportation systems in the world. Our fleet of 35 vessels serves a diverse range of communities - up to 47 ports of call - along the coast of British Columbia, Canada. As the primary provider of coastal ferry service in the province, BC Ferries recognizes its unique role in the region's economy. From maintaining a constant flow of goods and services, to linking families and friends, to attracting tourists to our many unique destinations, our company is a key participant in the development of coastal communities. The crossings between Vancouver Island and B.C.'s Lower Mainland can last from less than 90 minutes to two hours, depending on which run you take. There are three to choose from -- including our Vancouver-Victoria service -- with frequent sailings every day of the year. Shorter hops include BC Ferries service to the picturesque Gulf Islands (sailing from both Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland), and to friendly communities along the Sunshine Coast , northwest of Vancouver. There's also Vancouver Island's most beautiful shortcut , between Brentwood and Mill Bay, across the Saanich Inlet (near Victoria). If you're after more of a "cruise line" experience, consider a voyage through British Columbia's majestic Inside Passage . This one is particularly popular with international travellers, going from Port Hardy at the northern end of Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert, gateway to southeast Alaska. You'll enjoy the gracious hospitality of our flagship, Queen of the North (pictured above), including all the amenities of our other large ferries, plus en route movies and a licensed dining room with live entertainment during the summer season. Day rooms are available, as well as overnight cabins for those taking the return trip. To see what it's like aboard the Queen of the North, click here for a Virtual Tour . Of course, the main appeal of this memorable journey is the scenery: a constantly changing vista of mountains, fjords, wildlife, and passing ships. BC Ferries traverses the Inside Passage all year long, including a summer schedule that turns the excursion into a 15-hour day cruise. If this sounds like your kind of getaway, give us a call for information and reservations. Reservations are also a must on the eight-hour crossing from Prince Rupert to the beautiful Queen Charlotte Islands , where yet another remarkable facet of the British Columbia experience awaits. Sometimes referred to as the "Canadian Galapagos", the Charlottes provide habitat for many different species of wildlife. These islands are the ancestral home of the Haida Indian Nation, and feature many unique cultural attractions. Speaking of unique attractions, BC Ferries has introduced a new summer route between Port Hardy and Bella Coola, opening up British Columbia's spectacular mid-coast. It's the Discovery Coast Passage , so named because it gives people a chance to discover a part of the province that has been difficult to reach in years past. Choose from direct, same-day sailings between the two main ports, or experience extended journeys, with stops at McLoughlin Bay-Bella Bella, Denny Island, Klemtu and Ocean Falls. Join us, and set sail with a spirit of adventure! For information on when we sail, click onto our Schedule page. The new structure gives our company the means to grow a healthy, sustainable business in support of our mission: To provide a safe, reliable and efficient ferry service which consistently exceeds the expectations of our customers and communities, and creates value for the shareholder. Independence also allows us to access financial markets for funds to build new ferries and upgrade terminals. This is very important to our future success because growth projections indicate that the need for ferry service will expand. With this in mind, our company has developed a 15-year ship and terminal replacement and upgrade program that will ensure our ability to meet increasing demand. In all, 18 vessels will be replaced. Our Commitment to Customers As BC Ferries transforms itself into an independent commercial company, the focus on customers and customer needs will increase. The new BC Ferries will become more reliable and dependable, offer more choice in selection of food and activities, and improve the appearance and cleanliness of vessels and terminals. At the heart of these measures is the objective to improve the customer's overall travel experience. About our Governance BC Ferries routes and service levels are defined in the Coastal Ferry Services Contract between the Province of British Columbia and BC Ferries. The contract is a binding, 60-year agreement. The first service review is scheduled for 2008 and subsequent reviews will occur every four years. The company is governed by the B.C. Ferry Authority and overseen by an Independent Regulator appointed to monitor adherence to the Coastal Ferry Services Contract . The Regulator also ensures reasonable rate increases through the establishment of rate caps for average fares. Corporate Policies Code of Business Conduct and Ethics Principles and standards of conduct that all BC Ferries personnel are expected to follow. Corporate Disclosure and Securities Trading Policy Formulated to assist Directors, Officers and employees of BC Ferries in complying with securities laws. A total of 11,539 interviews were conducted with BC Ferries customers onboard major and minor routes during peak, shoulder and low seasons during 2003. Of those, a total of 3,626 mailed back a more comprehensive detailed questionnaire. Customers were asked to rate their satisfaction with 65 different aspects of BC Ferries services on a scale from 1 to 5. Although this research will be used to meet contractual obligations under the Coastal Ferry Services Contract , it also forms the basis for continued efforts at BC Ferries to improve and enhance products and services provided to customers. The annual Customer Satisfaction Tracking Surveys are part of the regular program of ongoing research conducted at BC Ferries to better understand our customer needs and interests. With nearly 179,000 dockings a year connecting hundreds of nautical miles of coastline, that s a fairly good average. However, BC Ferries does experience sailings that are late and our customers have asked us why. In fact, one of the comments we often hear is how the ferries are always late. So we ve decided to open up the ship s logs and share some of our experiences with you to illustrate how late, how often and why .
