The transformation from a centuries old mercantile port of call into an ultra modern maritime capital of the Gulf finds its roots in the farsighted policies of the ruling family of Dubai. In 1971 his highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum commissioned a feasibility study for the construction of an ambitious and very large ship repair facility. Today Dubai Drydocks has established itself as a leading shipyard in the world and the premier yard between Europe and the Far East. We are proud to have repaired vessels from around the globe. Dubai Drydocks strives to provide a ship repair service which fully meets the requirements of its customers . To achieve this goal Dubai Drydocks safety management system is certified to OHSAS 18001 1999 and the quality management system is certified to ISO 9001 2000. Since starting operations in 1983 the shipyard has repaired over 3,700 vessels of all types and sizes many of which are ULCC s and VLCC s representing a large proportion of the world s tanker fleet. The total deadweight of the ship s repaired is a staggering 260,000,000 tones and encompasses vessels from virtually every major owner and management company across the globe. From an initial workforce of only 300 the yard has grown and now employs over 5000 skilled employees with local companies able to supplement this total by over 1,500 additional workers when required. There are many advantages in repairing at Dubai Drydocks, a few key benefits are listed below. O The yard is located adjacent to the worlds major oil loading terminals and consequently tanker owners face no deviation costs when repairing at Dubai Drydocks. O The climate, with over 350 rain free days per year, is ideal for all repairs particularly hull treatment. O The workforce of over 5000 skilled artisans are all permanent employees who work within the same stringent safety and quality guidelines. Only pre-approved, pre qualified, sub contractors who have demonstrated their ability to comply with our rigorous requirements are permitted to work in the yard. O In house training continuously upgrades the skills and employee's knowledge. O Dubai Drydocks has its own sheltered port protected by four kilometers of breakwater with safe direct access from the sea. O The facility is built over a large site with wide roads and jetties and an abundance of open storage and work areas. O Dubai Drydocks continuously evaluates work practices and processes to ensure that equipment and techniques keep abreast of modern technology. Dubai Drydocks - Afloat Repair Division has shifted to its own purpose built workshop and is now operational from its new premises from 14th October 2002 onwards. The new workshop comprises a covered working area of approx. 1300 m? and is equipped with two (2) ten (10) ton capacity overhead travelling cranes. In addition, the facility is equipped with five (5) smaller, temperature controlled workshops for Hydraulics and Precision jobs, that require a dust free working environment. Total area covered under these shops is over 500 m?. The workshop has its own store for stocking commonly used hardware and consumables. The new facility is equipped with well appointed and well laid out air-conditioned offices for Management, Administration and Commercial personnel - incorporating in-built flexibility and space for future expansion and utilization. A separate office space for Supervisors, Senior Foremen and Foremen is located adjacent to the workshop area for better control of shop floor activities. All offices are equipped with telephone and computer terminals for better communication, planning and execution of ship repairs. Well equipped changing / washroom facilities have been provided for the shop floor staff. With close proximity of the new workshop to the Main Yard, Afloat Repair Division will be able to provide a better and speedier Ship Repair Service to its esteemed Worldwide Customers.
