EUROBULK Ltd was established in 1994 with the intention to engage in the management of ocean-going vessels. This company represents the continuation of the presence in Shipping of the Pittas family which started in the 1870's and survived two world wars before being expressed in partnerships with the Karoussis family in CHIOS NAVIGATION of London between 1960 - 1990 and with Petros Pappas in OCEANBULK MARITIME S.A. between 1991 - 1994. Eurobulk has put the emphasis of its operations on quality and has demonstrated its commitment to Safety Management by being among the first shipping companies to obtain ISO 9002 and ISM accrediation in January 1997. The company is presently in a growth mode and seeks to take advantage of its technical expertise and good name in the market to expand its operations. In that respect Eurobulk aims to conduct business with first class companies and develop close business relationships with them in their respective field. The list of commercial entities with whom the company has established close links includes The Klaveness group, Maersk Sealand, TITAN Cement, Panocean, Wan Hai Lines, etc. The company is fully computerized and employs a staff of about 30 highly educated and skilled professionals ashore and more than 250 sea staff 1870-BARQUE "CHIOS" TODAY-M/V IRINI The Company s roots go back four generations to the times when steam and diesel engines did not exist and ships were propelled by sails! These were the times when shipowners were also the captains of their ships and their family the crew. Those days ships were maximum 1000 tons and cost about 3000 pounds sterling to build! In the following pages one can see the evolution of the PITTAS family businesses from the late 19th century to the early 21st. Through this brief historical flashback one can get a feel of how shipping, as a whole, evolved during the last 130 years. PART A NIKOLAOS F PITTAS AND BROTHERS CHIOS PART B GEORGE N. PIRAEUS PART E EUROBULK Ltd - ATHENS According to our records, the first Pittas shipowner was Nikolaos F. Pittas N. F. Pittas (1837 - 1913) He was born in Chios Island of Greece in 1837. If our information is correct, the first vessel he fully owned was YPAPANTI , a 700 tons wooden, sail vessel that was built in Chios in 1873. He became the captain of the ship and his younger brothers and other relatives and friends joined him as crew. The vessel traded in the Mediterranean and Blac PART B GEORGE N. PITTAS BROTHERS AND COMPANY PIRAEUS Sometime after the death of Nikolaos F. Pittas in 1913 the company was renamed after the eldest of his sons, George. The emblem of the family business became the 5-spiked star symbolizing the union of the five brothers (this star still forms the basis of Eurobulk s emblem and is painted on all Eurobulk managed ships funnels). All 5 of them became captains and chief engineers and traveled on family owned ships exploiting them as best as they could. GEORGE 1869-1957 IOANNIS 1871-1945 FRAGGOULIS 1873-1956 DIMITRIOS 1880-1972 ARISTIDES 1888-1967 Aristides N. Pittas the youngest of the 5 had the innovative for those times idea of establishing an office ashore and coordinating the family business and some vessel requirements such as cargo bookings and crewing needs from ashore. Thus the first family office was established in 1926 in Romania which was at the time a big commodity exporter mainly for grain and coal. During those times the family controlled vessels rose up to 10,000 dwt and were steam driven. World war 2 followed and most of the family run vessels were bombed, torpedoed and lost. However the family made it back to the shipmanagement field mainly led by the two younger brothers Dimitrios and Aristides. Many of the children of this generation of our family followed their parents footsteps and formed the foundation of the third Generation of the Pittas Shipping tradition. They were initially represented by Nikos Pittas, son of Aristides, who catered for the family shipping interests during 1948 - 1960 through the offices of Lusi and Carras Shipping in London. Following is a list of vessels managed by the second generation of the Pittas family. In 1960 two sons of Aristides Pittas, namely Nikolaos and John together with the Caroussis brothers, Isidore (married to Joanna Pittas daughter of Dimitrios Pittas) and Dimitrios, formed a new shipping company in the growing shipping center of London. University educated in England in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering they possessed the necessary skills to continue the family tradition of quality ship management. They looked after the operation of both main types of commercial vessels, bulkers and tankers. IOANNIS A.PITTAS 1928 NIKOLAOS A. PITTAS 1920 DIMITRIOS C. CAROUSIS 1919 - 1992 ISIDOROS C. CAROUSIS 1918-1992 During their times the company assisted in the management of the following vessels. In late 1991 two sons of John Pittas, Aristides and Nicos, together with their cousin Aristides son of John s brother Pantelis joined forces with Petros Pappas of Oceanbulk Maritime S.A. and decided to gradually shift the Pittas family interests to Piraeus. This was the beginning of the active involvement of the fourth Pittas generation in shipping. During 1991 1994 Oceanbulk expanded dramantically from a fleet of 5 when the Pittas family joined to a maximum of 15 vessels. The following ships were acquired.
