Background Today s Empros Lines group traces its origins to the last third of the nineteenth century, when George P.Dracopoulos and the Azoff grain merchant Ambanopoulos owned the 280 n.r.t. barque Philadelphos. His son, Markos G. Dracopoulos, in 1914 became the owner and Master of the s/s Empros. George P. Dracopoulos (1830-1898) Markos G. Dracopoulos (1867-1918) The Barque Philadelphos Built: Syra-Greece, 1868 NRT 294 ss Empros Built: Middlesbrough-UK, 1889 NRT 1,346 In 1950, George Dracopoulos, son of Markos, using as seed capital the insurance from the s/s Empros which was lost during the the First World War, founded Empros Lines. He named the newly established company "Empros Lines" as homage to his father's vessel. The company's first vessel was the s/s Princeton, which was renamed Avance. s/s Avance Built: 1921 DWT: 5,168 George M. Dracopoulos Since its establishment Empros Lines has developed into a managing company of a modern fleet of liner vessels and bulk-carriers, as well as a liner operator and charterer. Throughout its history, Empros Lines has strived to maintain and enhance its reputation of fairness, credibility, punctuality and integrity. Today, the group s activities break down as follows: Liner Operators The company runs a liner service utilizing multi-purpose vessels, from Continent and Spain to Greece and Turkey. Over the years, Empros Lines has become specialised in the transportation of bulky, project and valuable delicate cargoes. It is a natural development that many leading names of the European industry have come to entrust Empros Lines vessels with the transportation of their products. Charterers Empros Lines charters in about 60 vessels every year, for the execution of various contracts. Even though the company has been involved in this activity for the last 30 years, they can state with pride that there have not been any major disputes with the owners of vessels chartered in, and that the company has always fulfilled its charter party obligations punctually. In a market, where operators appear one day only to disappear the next, Empros Lines has acquired the reputation of a serious, professional and reliable player. Shipmanagers All vessels managed by Empros Lines are subject to the highest maintenance and safety standards. All vessels under management have already received, or are close to receiving their ISM certification. Long serving qualified officers assisted by skilled lower rank crews ensure the competent manning of the Company's fleet, continued safety onboard and reliable performance for the charterers of the company s vessels. All shore personnel are carefully selected among the most experienced and capable individuals involved in shipping. Both office and vessels are fitted with the advanced tools and technology to assist them in meeting the demands placed on modern ship managers and operators. This is possible only through a safe and environmentally-conscious operation, which complies with national and international law as well as statutory and Classification Society requirements. Shipmanagement Staff The vessels' shoreside management team is comprised of experienced professionals, many of them former senior seagoing deck officers and engineers with Empros-managed vessels. Their experience with the company's vessel's and operating procedures ensures that the vessels will meet their contractual obligations in a cost-effective manner. Safety Management System In 1997 Empros Lines was certified in accordance with the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) chapter IX, International Safety Management (ISM) as adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolution A.741 (18). The company's Safety and Environmental Protection Policy is the benchmark against which all decisions are measured before any action is taken. Spain - Turkey every 15 days Empros runs a liner service with regular sailings connecting Northern Europe with Greece, Turkey, and The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) , using own (Empros-managed) and chartered tonnage. Over the last 50 years, having cooperated with the leaders of European industry, Empros Lines has acquired a reputation for reliable and efficient service at competitive rates. To maintain the frequency of the sailings, to provide flexibility regarding discharging ports and cargoes and to minimize delivery times Empros Lines tries to have different sailings to serve each region. The types of cargoes transported range from the most delicate to the largest and heaviest objects, and include steel products, timber, project cargoes, breakbulk and bulk cargoes. Shippers have the option of choosing on- or under-deck shipment. Empros Lines can provide a door-to-door service by arranging inland transportation at both the origin and the destination (pre-carriage and on-carriage). Cargoes are booked through Empros Lines' agent network. These agents are located in the areas where the bulk of the cargoes originate.
