ASMAR, Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Company, is an autonomous State-owned company, belonging to the military industry, whose main purpose is to maintain the ships of the Chilean Navy. The law allows it to extend its services to the careening and repair of ships and naval devices for private owners both domestic and international, and also to build war ships, auxiliary vessels, commercial ships and fishing vessels for Chile and other countries. The Company is organized in three industrial plants located in Punta Arenas, Valparaiso and Talcahuano, being this last one the biggest in terms of facilities and capacity. The Corporate Head Office is situated in Valparaiso. In total, the Company has a permanent crew of 2,971 persons, including engineers (459), Technicians (709) and Qualified personnel (1,803). Our company is certified under the strict Quality Standard ISO-9001:2000 issued by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance, and focus its effort to customers' satisfaction. ASMAR has a declared purpose in relation with the environment preservation; therefore adopts the necessary measures towards the handling of industrial waste both solid and liquid, as well as pollution control. Likewise, the company has a special concern on the prevention of risks and occupational health of its workers In the area of repairs, ASMAR holds an important record of minor and major projects, developed within suitable terms and budget, and according to the most demanding standards of international quality. The result of this management is demonstrated by clients confidence on its work teams made up of project managers, estimators, technicians and specialists, who faithfully interpret the requirements of clients. The execution of repair projects in areas such as structures, electricity, electronics, hydraulic, diesel engines, boilers and pipes, metallurgy, machines tools and carpentry, assures an integral service to the ships that call at their shipyards. With the objective to optimize the capacity of the existing units before the multiple necessities of their owners, ASMAR has developed important projects of conversion and modernisation of military ships, which have constituted highly cost-effective solutions and, consequently, has extended the life span of these ships. Within the most important projects developed by the shipyards it emphasises the conversion and modernisation of destroyers and frigates. DESTROYERS The objective of this project consisted, mainly, in transforming the County Class Destroyers of the Chilean Navy (DLG) into helicopters carriers (DLH) by means of extending and reinforcing the flight deck of the ships to operate with two heavy helicopters, providing a double hangar for the airships. The project required the removal of the Seaslug missile system located to stern and its associated hydraulic system, modifying the former Santa Barbara to create accommodation spaces, a maintenance area and storerooms. The new flight deck considered, in addition, the helicopter retrieving and transfer system 'Assist' developed by Indal Technologies of Canada that allows the helicopters to operate in safe form during navigation. Jointly, the electronic systems and of defence were modernised, integrating these last to the new command and control system. FRIGATES The conversion project of Leander Class Frigates of the Chilean Navy considered the extension and reinforcing of the flight deck to operate with one heavy helicopter, the provision of larger hangar and the installation of the Canadian helicopter retrieving and transfer system 'Assist'. Also, their electronic systems were modernised together with the installation of a new command and control system. As to the defence systems of the ship, the Exocet MM38 missiles were replaced by MM40 and they were reinstalled in both sides of the ship.
