Gemak Shipbuilding Industry and Trading S.A. is one of the oldest shipyards in Turkey, with a history dating back to 1969. The shipyard is located in the Tuzla suburb of Istanbul, north east of the Sea of Marmara at the entrance to the Bosphorus. The main activities are the drydocking, repair and conversion of all types of vessels. Gemak took over the shares of Tuzla Shipbuilding Industry S.A, a new building shipyard located in Tuzla, Istanbul, in 2000. The yard deals with turn-key new building projects. Today, Mr Ismet Uner, a naval architect, is owner and chairman of both Gemak Shipbuilding Industry and Trading S.A. and Tuzla Shipbuilding Industry S.A. Gemak Shipyard is capable of carrying out docking and repair works of any kind of vessel including cable layers, LPG / LNG carriers, Passenger and Ro-Ro Ships, heavy-lifters, high-speed catamarans and seismic research vessels. Shipyard has two floating docks with the lifting capacities of 9000 and 28000 metric tons. Vessels also be accommodated at repair berths up to 300 meters in length at a maximum draught of 12 meters. Floating docks are equipped with 2x10 and 2x5 tons cranes while max. crane capacity at the yard is 100 ton as a self-propelled floating crane "Atlet". The annual number of vessels repaired at Gemak is around 75 resulting a tonnage of around 1,500,000 DWT. Gemak performs different type of conversions to existing vessels. Conversion works are completed in short time due to extensive pre-fabrication and advanced planning. Shipyard is specialised in lengthening and re-engining, conversion to cement carrier with pneumatic and mechanic equipment, conversion of single hull tankers to double hull.
