Home | Disclaimer | Security Program | Contact Us | Help | Top Lykes Lines On-Line Lykes Lines profile Lykes Lines is one of the U.S. liner industry's longest enduring brands. It began as Lykes Bros. Steamship Company in 1899, with a wooden schooner transporting cattle from the U.S. Gulf to Cuba. In the 1920s, the line expanded, opening offices in Europe, and by the 1930s trade routes extended to the Mediterranean and Asia. In 1979, the Lykes Letitia was the first US-flag ship to call at a port in China since the revolution there. In 1997, the line was acquired by CP Ships, and has since expanded over much of the globe. Today the line operates services between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Asia, India, Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, Central and South America the Caribbean and Australasia. Its services include those previously operated under the Ivaran and CCAL brands. Lykes Lines has a strong reputation for innovation, especially in e-commerce. The unique Route Finder function on its website is a prime example of its service offering continually developing new facilities to help customers. Five of the ships in the Lykes Lines fleet operate under the US flag (on the Gulf Atlantic Sprint, Loop 1). This enables it to bid for U.S. government and military cargo – a significant business on the transatlantic. Lykes Lines has the most extensive service coverage of any line in the CP Ships group. It has won several awards including the IFW Shipping Line of the Year, the CIFFA award for Best Service to Africa and the Lloyd's Loading List award for Fastest Transit Times on the North Atlantic. 2005 Lykes Lines Limited. Home | Disclaimer | Security Program | Contact Us | Help | Top Lykes Lines On-Line Door to door delivery (not just port to port) Open the door to our intermodal services. If you thought that Lykes Lines could only deliver your cargo port to port-think again. We can make the business of logistics a lot easier. And save you money. We will arrange to drop off a container (or containers) at your company’s premises, and leave it with you for an agreed time while you load it up. When the container is ready, we’ll pick it up, truck or railroad it to the port, load it on our ships and transport it to its destination port. From there we will organize onward delivery to the final destination. Sound simple? It is. And because you’re dealing with only one party-Lykes Lines-a lot of other things become simpler too. Like paperwork. We take care of a lot of it for you, so you cut down on the time spent on administration. Here’s another advantage. Because you get all of the costs on one invoice, it makes it easier for you to calculate how much should be added to the price of re-sellable goods in order to recoup the costs of shipping. So how do we do it? Organization. We have a comprehensive transportation network in most of the countries we serve. We own trucking lines in several countries and we have very competitive agreements with independent railroads and trucking companies. They know the standards we expect-and they deliver them along with our containers. We have our own people spread across the United States, and Europe and in South America, Mexico and Asia too. So when problems arise (as they sometimes do), we can solve them quickly, on the spot. Our intermodal service is available on every route we serve. It’s reliable, efficient and competitive. How easy is it to use? As easy as opening a door.   2005 Lykes Lines Limited. Home | Disclaimer | Security Program | Contact Us | Help | Top Lykes Lines On-Line Schedule Search has been developed to give you a wide range of search options to find precisely the information you need to plan your shipments. Point to Point, Schedule List, Port Search and Vessel Search are already live and Schedule Report will be available soon. You can access these features by clicking on the links below. Point to Point lets you choose a preferred point of departure and arrival, and shows all services linking those points in a selected period of time. First select the regions between which you need to send your consignment, then choose the cities of origin and departure. Finally, select a departure date and decide how far ahead of that you want to look. Schedule List shows you the standard list of schedules for all our routes. But we have introduced new features to make it much simpler to search both directions and all the loops in any one service. The schedules include vessels, voyage numbers, departure and arrival dates and ports of call. Once you are in any schedule, you can access two extra features by clicking either the ship name to obtain extra information about the ship (including flag, tonnage and year built) or the date of a completed port call, to find out exactly what time the ship arrived and departed. Port Search gives you a detailed onscreen report showing all of the vessels calling at a particular port: simply choose the information from the drop-down lists and click search. Once you have created your search, you may sort the data by clicking on any of the column headings. Vessel Search shows you all of the movements of any Lykes Lines ship over a period of time that you choose. Just fill in the information you need from drop-down lists, and click the search button. Once you have created your search, you may sort the data by clicking on any of the column headings. Schedule Report, coming soon, is a detailed report on any of our schedules. It includes cut off times and inland transportation for different voyages on the route, allowing you to plan your shipments and timings. It also shows both arrival and departure dates for each port call. You can print the report for reference and filing. "> "> U.S. Government awards Lykes Lines ten year contract The US Department of Transportation has granted Lykes Lines the right to operate five US-flag containerships in its new Maritime Security Program for ten years beginning 1st October 2005. The ships will receive government subsidy to offset the cost of operating under US flag. Over the ten-year contract term, the subsidy will total $145 million. The five ships already operate on the TransAtlantic, on the Gulf Atlantic Sprint, Loop 1. MSP was created to ensure the Department of Defense has ready access to a fleet of modern and efficient commercial US-flag ships that could be made available in times of war or national emergency. This new contract represents an increase in our participation in MSP. We currently operate five US flag ships in a single loop on the TransAtlantic, but only three are MSP ships and receive subsidy under the existing contract which expires on 30th September 2004. 2005 Lykes Lines Limited. "> "> Five services on the Pacific We are again expanding our services between Asia and North America with the addition of two more weekly, fixed day services. We are also upgrading our existing services from South-East Asia and cutting transit times from China to the U.S. and Canada. In addition, we are launching our first service between Asia and Australia, commencing July 7. As part of the expansion, we are renaming the three services we currently operate on the transpacific to become: Pacific Sprint Loop One (formerly Pacific Sprint) Pacific Sprint Loop Two (formerly Asia North America Sprint) Pacific Sprint Loop Three (formerly Asia Canada Sprint) New transpacific services The two new transpacific services, which will be offered via a slot swap arrangement on existing services and are still subject to regulatory approval, will be named Pacific Sprint Loops Four and Five. These services are expected to commence in July. Pacific Sprint Loop Four will call Yantian, Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Los Angeles, Oakland, Tacoma, Yokohama, Kobe, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Yantian. Pacific Sprint Loop Five will call Hong Kong, Nagoya, Yokohama, Oakland, Los Angeles, Kwangyang, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong. Upgrading services From mid-July, we plan to upgrade our Pacific Sprint Loop Two service from South-East Asia, offering a fixed day weekly service calling Singapore, Pasir Gudang (Malaysia), Laem Chabang (Thailand), Shanghai, Pusan, Vancouver, Shanghai. At the same time, Pacific Sprint Loop Three will also be upgraded to include calls in South China, including the increasingly important port of Xiamen. The transit time between Xiamen and Vancouver is only 14 days. Tony Bruno, Senior Vice President, says: Our services will now provide better transit times between the ports which our customers have identified as best suited to their needs. For example, the transit from Hong Kong to Oakland will be only 13 days and from Shanghai to Vancouver just 12 days. By extending our Pacific Sprint Loop 2 service, we will for the first time offer fixed day, weekly services, through co-operation with PIL, from South-East Asia. We have been serving China for many years and have built up a comprehensive office network and a wide range of feeder and intermodal services throughout Asia. These changes will not have a material effect on capacity on the transpacific. Mr Bruno says: This expanded range of services and port calls demonstrates our commitment to continue to build our presence in Asia, especially China. The recent launch of our Chinese language website www.lykeslines.com/china is further evidence of our commitment to the shippers in the region. Our new Asia-Australia service will be operated every two weeks on a fixed day basis, with the Lykes Crusader and Lykes Master both with a capacity of 1700 TEU and which are two of the fastest vessels in the trade, each with a speed of 23 knots. We commenced services between Australasia and North America last year, with our South Pacific Sprint services. The launch of this new service in July is a natural extension of our existing services in this region and marks a continuation of Lykes Lines strategy to link all its major trading regions, explains Mr Bruno. He adds: We have many customers who want to ship with us to all of their major markets, so we continue to consider further opportunities to expand our service network worldwide. "> "> US Gulf-Brazil service launching We have once again expanded our services, this time with the launch of another link between the US Gulf, the Caribbean and East Coast South America. "This new service, called the US Gulf-Brazil service, will launch at the end of June," says Senior Vice President Tony Bruno. "We believe it will be particularly attractive to Brazilian exporters, especially as we will include a call at the northern port of Vila do Conde, in the province of Par , on the northbound leg." The port rotation is: Houston, New Orleans, Caucedo (Dominican Republic), Puerto Cabello (Venezuela), Imbituba, Santos, Vitoria, Salvador, Vila do Conde (all Brazil), Puerto Cabello, Cartegena (Colombia), Houston. "The service, operating every two weeks, will allow us to offer some of the fastest transits on the trade between Houston/New Orleans and the Dominican Republic/Venezuela southbound, and between northern Brazil and the US Gulf northbound," explains Mr Bruno. In the last few months, we have already launched a third weekly transpacific service the Asia North America Sprint, and a direct service from North Europe to the Caribbean. We have also upgraded our services between West Coast South America and Central America/California. "We have many loyal customers who want to ship with us whenever they can, so we constantly assess new markets and trade lanes to see if we, and our customers, can expand our businesses together," says Mr Bruno. The US Gulf-Brazil service, operating with three ships of approx. 1700 teu, will launch northbound from Imbituba on June 27 and southbound from Houston on June 30. 2005 Lykes Lines Limited. The launch coincides with the 25 th anniversary of the Letitia Lykes calling at Shanghai on March 18, 1979 – the first U.S. flagged ship to call at a Chinese port after the Revolution in 1949. “The need for ocean services between China and North America continues to grow,” says Tony Bruno, Senior Vice President. “Although much of the demand is currently driven by North American shippers, there is an expanding group of importers and exporters based in China who also need to ship across the Pacific. “Our Chinese language website, linked to the home page of our main site www.lykeslines.com, will help these businesses access our services.” The Chinese site focuses on the three services which we operate between Asia and North America. They call at a total of seven ports in China, including twice weekly at Shanghai and Hong Kong. the Pacific Sprint, offering services to Los Angeles (U.S.) and Ensenada and Manzanillo (Mexico), calls at Chiwan, Hong Kong, Ningbo and Shanghai. the Asia Canada Sprint, offering services to Vancouver (Canada) and Anchorage (Alaska), calls at Tianjin, Qingdao and Shanghai. the Asia North America Sprint (fully operational from April 6) offering services to Vancouver and Oakland (U.S.), calls at Hong Kong and Yantian. “The site also includes information on, for instance, our extensive feeder and intermodal networks on both sides of the Pacific and the wide variety of equipment available. It also describes our experience and expertise in handling temperature-controlled cargo and the insurance services we offer,” says Mr Bruno. We offer services all over the world and first began serving China in 1925. Our ships were among the last U.S. flag carriers in that country before the trade was suspended after the Revolution. In calling at Shanghai, the Letitia Lykes was resuming a service that ceased in the same port on May 8, 1949 when the Ruth Lykes departed after delivering to China a cargo of 1,007 tons of cotton and general merchandise. The 14,662dwt Letitia Lykes, 540 ft in length, with a capacity of 100 TEUs was one of five Clipper Class sister ships built for us between 1965 and 1968 at Avondale Shipyards, New Orleans. All the ships were named after members of the Lykes family – the company was founded by seven Lykes brothers at the end of the nineteenth century. At the time of the Letitia Lykes' call, the President of Lykes said: “As the first call by a U.S. vessel in a mainland Chinese port since 1949, we believe this Shanghai call will serve as a major step towards the mutual goal of rebuilding commercial relations, understanding and goodwill between the two nations.” Mr Bruno says the launch of the Chinese website is just one in a series of innovative services that we have offered customers over the years. “We respond to customer demand and stay ahead of the competition.”   2005 Lykes Lines Limited. "> "> Canadian authorities impose 24 Hour Rule Canada Border Security Agency (CBSA) – Advance Commercial Information (ACI) Imports to Canada The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will be implementing its requirements pertaining to Advance Cargo Reporting starting on April 21 st , 2004 . As part of these requirements, the Canadian government will require electronic reporting of detailed cargo data 24 hours prior to vessel loading at the foreign port of origin in order to conduct a security assessment of goods transiting Canadian ports. The following highlights the key CBSA requirements: The CBSA will require that shipment data be submitted electronically via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) at least 24-hours prior to cargo being loaded onboard vessels bound for Canada . The 24-hour rule applies to all cargo that will be discharged at a Canadian port and all Freight Remaining on Board (FROB) at a Canadian port (unless the goods have been loaded in the United States ). In addition, bulk cargo and some break-bulk cargo may be exempted. At least 24-hours prior to loading, the carrier must report primary cargo manifest data and, when required, either the carrier or a Freight Forwarder with an approved CBSA bond must report supplementary data as defined in the CBSA Participants Requirement Document (PRD). Should an eligible Freight Forwarder elect to transmit supplemental data directly to the CBSA, we will provide a unique Cargo Control Number (CCN) at time of booking which forms an essential consignment identifier in the EDI transmission. As a general rule, supplemental data is required when the shipper is a Freight Forwarder or when the ultimate consignor/consignee is not identified on the ocean carrier Bill of Lading (primary data). At the supplemental level, the CBSA will require detailed shipment information including but not limited to items such as the actual shipper and ultimate consignee's name and address as well as an accurate and detailed description of the cargo. Where risks are identified or information is missing, Risk Assessment messages will be issued by the CBSA to the operating carrier who filed the preliminary data. These may also be issued to the party filing the supplemental data. Detailed implementation timelines and details are still being finalized and will be communicated as soon as they are confirmed by the CBSA. It should be noted that due to this new regulation, any missing information, incorrectly filed or late data transmissions will subject the consignment to loading delays as well as increase the possibility of examination. Please rest assured that Lykes Lines has been working diligently to ensure that our processes and systems are compliant with the new requirements. We are currently reviewing processes and policies within all relevant areas of our operations including local documentation cut-off times. A Customer Service Representative will advise you of the container and documentation cut-off times at the time of booking. Lykes Lines has been working with the various government agencies to create a secure supply chain and is committed to keeping you informed. We will continue to communicate further developments on this and future regulatory requirements. Should you have any questions, we encourage you to contact your Lykes Lines representative and to review the documentation and Frequently Asked Questions available on the CBSA website at www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/advance/menu-e.html     2005 Lykes Lines Limited. "> "> Special Bill - Changes to USA 24-Hour Rule advance filing for NVOCCs All automated NVOCC customers should be aware of changes to the US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) 24-Hour Advance Manifest Filing Rule. These changes, termed “Special Bill”, came into effect Saturday January 10, 2004 . As always, NVOCC “House Bills” must be transmitted 24 hours prior to vessel loading. But now, Carrier (VOCC) “Master Bills” must also be transmitted, and will be used for clearances and releases, provided NVOCC details match. Please note also that any changes, such as correction notices, made after January 10 must be handled according to the new “Special Bill” rules. “Special Bill” Rules All NVOCCs sending electronic manifests to US Customs must re-program their AMS manifest transmissions as follows or their manifest will be rejected: Send the NVO qualifier for all US-destined cargo or your manifest will be rejected ('N' for CAMIR systems or '30' for X12 systems). Send the NVO Freight Remaining on Board qualifier for all US FROB cargo or your manifest will be rejected ('P' for CAMIR systems or '32' for X12 systems). Send our standard carrier alpha code (LYKL) as second notify party or your manifest will be rejected. Send our 11-digit master bill number or your manifest will be rejected. (B04 segment for CAMIR systems or N9 segment for X12 systems). Although our bookings numbers are 10 digits, you must provide our eleven-digit BL number (usually our 10 digit booking number + 0-zero). When the VOCC “Master” bill and NVOCC “House” bills match in US Customs AMS, your company should receive a 'match' message from Customs. If your company's data is not transmitted in the above manner, US Customs will reject your manifest. We will not receive confirmation of your filing and this may affect your cargo loading status. We will advise you of our intended Bill of Lading number and SCAC code at the time of booking If you have any questions, please contact your local representative. "> "> Expanding our presence in Africa We have further expanded the range of services we offer in Africa, with a dedicated feeder between Abidjan, Ivory Coast and Tema, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria. The feeder connects directly with our North America-Africa multi-purpose service , which has recently added a call at the port of Abidjan. The service, operating once every two weeks, links the U.S. and Canada with West and South Africa – and East Africa via relay. The dedicated feeder also links with our Europe-Africa-East Coast South America service which has just been upgraded to once every eight days. "We decided to add the direct call at Abidjan because it allows us to offer our customers even greater flexibility and frequency of service throughout West Africa. And the new dedicated feeder ensures we can offer the fastest and most frequent links between Abidjan and Tema and Lagos," explains Tony Bruno, Senior Vice President. Additional feeder service is also available to Libreville, Gabon; Dual, Cameroon; Freetown, Sierra Leone; Pointe Noire, Congo; Cotonou, Benin and Lome,Togo. We also offer extensive intermodal services from Durban and Cape Town throughout southern Africa and frequent feeder links along the east coast and southern part of the west coast. Last year we signed a deal with Global Container Lines to carry cargo between South Africa and East African ports. A new agent, African Liner Agencies Ltd, was appointed in East Africa. "We offer extensive intermodal services throughout North America and want to be able to offer the same level of door-to-door service in Africa," says Mr Bruno. Lykes Lines has recently been named the Best Carrier to Africa by the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA), Central Division, for the fourth year in a row.   2005 Lykes Lines Limited. "> "> South Pacific Sprint Launched Introducing the South Pacific Sprint - Two New Sprint Services Connecting North America To Australia and New Zealand. Our route network across the Pacific is being expanded further this month with the launch of South Pacific Sprint - two new services between North America and Australia/New Zealand. The South Pacific-West Coast Sprint is a weekly, fixed day service, operating in two loops between West Coast ports in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and the main ports in Australia and New Zealand. The South Pacific-East Coast Sprint , also operates on a weekly, fixed day schedule, calling at major U.S. East Coast ports before sailing for Australia and New Zealand via the Panama Canal. Tony Bruno, Senior Vice President, explains the reasoning behind the launch of the South Pacific Sprint: "Our transpacific services between Asia and North and South America have been operating successfully for some years now," he says. "These new services are a logical extension to our coverage in the Pacific region. They will undoubtedly be attractive to our existing North American customers who use us on other trades. "If they also ship cargo to Australia and New Zealand, we definitely want to talk to them. We also believe that shippers in New Zealand and Australia who haven’t done business with us before will see the advantages of using Lykes Lines. "North America is a major hub in Lykes Lines’ route network, we know our way around better than any of our competitors. And because our coverage is comprehensive, we can offer a wider variety of delivery solutions to our customers." Lykes Lines has an extensive office network in the United States, Canada and Mexico and our long experience of operating fast and efficient door-to-door services is unrivalled in the region. "We have also developed a solid expertise in the transport of temperature-controlled cargo, which will be particularly beneficial to the meat, dairy produce and fruit importers and exporters," continues Mr Bruno. "Australia, New Zealand and North America are increasingly important trading partners. We are very pleased to be able to play our part in the growing trade across the Pacific between these countries. We also serve several of the Pacific islands on these new services."   2005 Lykes Lines Limited.
