Everett Branyan, saying, after completion; The quality of workmanship and project control was of an excellent standard and the A&P Group will certainly be recommended to both the US Navy and my own company Maersk (A P Moller) for any future work . A&P Tyne s facilities comprise four graving docks - 216.1m x 28.9m; 173.8m x 24.4m; 170.7m x 23.2m and 149.4m x 21.3m. Leading shiprepair, conversion and marine services specialist A&P are delighted to have completed the overhaul of another 'grey ship' - their fourth this year. The RFA Sir Bedivere, the RFA Sir Galahad and the RFA Sir Geraint all underwent their bi-annual refits earlier this year at A&P's Tyne facility, continuing the company's long association with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels. In addition, the RFA Fort Austin has recently completed an 82-day refit at A&P Falmouth where it was drydocked for a major overhaul. The contract included a particularly large mix of work, which utilised all the yard skills together with various contractors being brought in to assist. The work package included the installation of a new 240v domestic power distribution system throughout the entire accommodation; installation of a new internal communication system; a major overhaul of three generators and the fitting of a new set. A new fresh water generating plant and a cargo refrigeration system were also installed; accommodation was upgraded and a new paint system was applied to the flight deck. "This was a particularly large overhaul and we are delighted to say that it went out of our yard on time and on budget." Comments Ian Pike, managing director at Falmouth. "We have done a lot of work for the MOD this year already and we hope the excellent working relationship and we look forward to welcoming the Orangeleaf to Falmouth during late summer." During her visit to the Tyne yard last year, A&P completed the highly successful installation of a new Kongsberg Simrad Multibeam echo sounder and sub-bottom profiler. This has enabled the vessel to carry out surveys of the seabed in great detail over the last twelve months. This year the James Clark Ross's visit to A&P Tyne was to Seventh Consecutive A&P Docking The reefer market has proved the most successful for A&P Falmouth throughout recent months with a total of six bookings for reefer ships from two separate owners. Falmouth is ideally located for the reefer trades on the ballast route from Northern Europe to loading ports in South Africa, Canary Islands and the Caribbean. Amer Shipping s 13,312 grt vessel the Amer Choapa was the first to enter the shipyard during July. Work completed during the 9 day docking included blasting and painting, steelwork repairs, hatch cover repairs, main engine survey and overhauls to the rudder and tailshaft. Following the successful completion of the Amer Choapa, the 9,070 grt Amer Whitney arrived during early August for similar works covering a 10 day period. Having successfully completed both vessels, A&P Falmouth then welcomed the arrival on 9th October of the third Amer Shipping vessel the 9,072 grt Amer Everest, for drydocking and survey. Another major reefer vessel owner, Norway s Leif Hoegh & Co. ASA, also utilised the repair facilities of A&P Falmouth and A&P Tyne. The Ivory Dawn arrived in Tyne on the 31st August, this was followed by the 7,743 grt Crystal Pride which arrived during early September for drydocking and survey. Work included hull preparation, painting, boiler and generator maintenance. Deck repairs included work on the cargo cranes and hatch covers. Following the Crystal Pride, her sister ship, Crystal Prince arrived in Falmouth for drydocking and survey during a 12 day period during mid- September, and a third sister ship, the Crystal Primadonna a rrived at the end of the month with similar works completed, and left the yard on schedule on 8th October. A&P Falmouth Managing Director, Ian Pike commented: We are pleased that these two major reefer vessel owners have chosen to place successive orders with A&P Falmouth, which confirms our ability to give a fast turnaround at the right price, so necessary in the reefer market . Stirling Shipmanagement of Glasgow, now part of Seacor Group, have been a regular customer of A&P Tyne over the last 5 years. In 2000 A&P successfully completed no less than twelve drydockings for them. At A&P Tyne, we believe in providing a reliable and consistent service , comments managing director Fr e d Newman. We have an excellent track record with Stirling Shipmanagement; they are happy with the quality of work we supply and the fast turnaround that we always achieve. A good long-term relationship with an important client such as Stirling Shipmanagement is definitely beneficial to both parties. The start of this year was excellent too, in the first four months Tyne undertook general drydocking and repairs of the Stirling Fyne, Stirling Tay and the Stirling Aquarius and carried out further work on the Stirling Sirius and Stirling Altair on behalf of this valued client. These are all offshore supply vessels that service the rigs and platforms in the North Sea; they range from 65 meters in length up to around 82 meters. They regularly come in for annual survey and repair providing continuity work for the yard. The repair work that A&P Tyne generally covers is on the propulsion systems, steering and Azimuth type propulsion thrusters. In addition they often do refurbishment of thruster tunnels, hull preparation and painting, general voyage repairs including deck and pipeworks, together with main and auxiliary engine survey work. The Victoria has drydocked at A&P Southampton twice in the past 3 years in its King George V drydock. This year work carried out during the 12 day docking consisted of routine maintenance and repairs including steel and pipe renewals. M i ke Smith, Managing Director of A&P Southampton was delighted with the feedback he received from P&O Cruises on completion of the contract. He commented: We always ask our clients if they are happy with the work we have done for them. It is very important to us to know what we are doing well and where we could improve our service. I was particularly pleased to know that P&O Cruises rated us very highly on good levels of communications, inform a t i o n supplied and our general standard of workmanship. Names such as Falstaff, Figaro and Carmen usually conjure up images of big bold singers with big bold voices, in the shipping world however, they are in fact big bold car carrying vessels owned by the Swedish company, Wallenius. Leading shiprepair, conversion and marine services specialist A&P have recently experienced all three of these vessels for refits in their Falmouth yard. The Figaro underwent a 19 day dry dock period during which time A&P carried out hull UHP preparation and applied a 5 year in water system. The vessel is so large, at 198 metres long and 32.2 meters wide, that it had to be dry docked stern first to allow for shoring and overhaul of the stern loading ramp. Additional work carried out included an overhaul and survey of the main engine, tail shaft and seals and major repair work on the cargo hold ventilators. The Carmen, sister ship to the Figaro, was also docked by A&P Falmouth for a 14 day dry docking commencing on 4th July for a similar work package to be carried out. "We are hoping that these vessels become regular visitors after the docking of the Falstaff last year." Said Ian Pike, Managing Director of A&P Falmouth. The Fleetfusion spiral welding process originated in 1979 as a result of demand from the M.o.D for a cost effective repair for Hydroplane shafts on submarines, this process has served Helifusion well for many years and will continue in cert a i n applications. Utilising the M.I.G. welding system however has its limitations in that the maximum deposition is 2.5mm per run thus inter run machining is required for multiple layer build ups. It was only after Helifusion was acquired by A&P, that serious thought was given to developing alternative welding methods to reduce consumable wastage and maximise machine utilisation. After extensive research and development and a switch to the Tungsten Inert Gas system the process was submitted and subsequently accepted by Lloyds Register. The main advantages of this process are better control of the welding parameters, with superior bonding, less distortion on thin sections, less wastage of filler wire, weld can be applied to a greater thickness, and there is no machining requirement between runs if multiple layers are required. Lloyds Certification for Helifusion Welding Process Hans Stoop - New Agent A&P Group are pleased to welcome Hans Stoop and his company - PC Maritime Services B.V. to join their growing network of Worldwide agents. PC Maritime Services Ltd is based in the Netherlands and his territory covers Belgium, Luxembourg and of course the Netherlands. A&P s Group Business Development Director, Clive Towl commented: We are pleased to welcome Hans Stoop to our agents team, Benelux is a very important territory and we are delighted that Hans will contribute fully to our European success. A&P have successfully completed a large, technical contract on behalf of Marine Atlantic of Canada. The Leif Ericson RoRo ferry (formerly known as the Stena Challenger when previously owned by Stena) was drydocked at A&P Falmouth for repairs to its two Becker rudders and major works on its stern and bow ramps. Marine Atlantic wanted their new vessel to have a new bow ramp and twin stern ramps installed so that vehicles can be discharged at two different levels at the same time, thus speeding up disembarkation, explains managing director Ian Pike. Although fairly straight forward, this was a big and technical operation which involved cutting the existing stern ramp in half and fitting a new arrangement of hydraulic rams and pipework to operate the two individual ramps. The contract was completed on schedule and to the full satisfaction of the client. The Leif Ericson will operate from Sydney harbour on Cape Breton Island. The passenger Fast Cat has previously docked at A&P s Falmouth facility during 1999, and is now visiting Southampton for its annual winter drydocking and repairs. The vessel is due to be drydocked for a period of 14 days and repairs will include routine planned maintenance, including a new underwater paint scheme. Project Manager Angus Fairly commented that the Southampton team are looking forward to demonstrating to Condor Vitesse at A&P Southampton Condor Vitesse at A&P Southampton Twin ramp challenge for A&P Falmouth Condor the yards reputation for a high level of care during refit of all passenger vessels, allowing the vessel to return immediately into service, following refit. 0870 60 7 24 365 A&P TYNE Benton Way, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear NE28 6EY Tel: +44 (0) 191 295 0777 Fax: +44 (0) 191 295 0888 Email: tyne@ap-group.co.uk Website: www.ap-group.co.uk A&P SOUTHAMPTON Western Avenue, Western Docks, Southampton SO15 0HH Tel: +44 (0) 23 8070 4488 Fax: +44 (0) 23 8070 4735 Email: southampton@ap-group.co.uk Website: www.ap-group.co.uk A&P FALMOUTH The Docks, Falmouth, Cornwall TR11 4NR Tel: +44 (0) 1326 212100 Fax: +44 (0) 1326 319433 Email: falmouth@ap-group.co.uk Website: www.ap-group.co.uk A&P SHIPCARE - TILBURY Unit 16E Industrial Complex Tilbury Freeport, Tilbury, Essex Tel: +44 (0) 23 1375 855023 Fax: +44 (0) 23 1375 855027 Email: enquiries@shipcare.co.uk Website: www.shipcare.co.uk A&P SHIPCARE - CHATHAM Chatham Docks, Gillingham Gate, Chatham, Kent ME4 4SW Tel: +44 (0) 1634 827369 Fax: +44 (0) 1634 826344 Email: chatham@ap-group.co.uk Website: www.ap-group.co.uk A&P SHIPCARE - RAMSGATE Slipway Building, Royal Harbour, Ramsgate, Kent CT11 8LS Tel: +44 (0) 1843 593140 Fax: +44 (0) 1843 850462 Email: ramsgate@ap-group.co.uk Website: www.ap-group.co.uk A&P SHIPCARE - DOVER Units 1-4 Poulton Close, Dover, Kent CT17 0HL Tel: +44 (0) 1304 206811 Fax: +44 (0) 1304 201763 Email: dover@ap-group.co.uk Website: www.ap-group.co.uk A&P Group , Western Avenue, Western Docks, Southampton SO15 0HH United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0) 23 8070 7600 Fax: +44 (0) 23 8077 2910 Email: holdings@ap-group.co.uk Website: www.ap-group.co.uk A&P Group Locations A&P Group Head Office A&P Group Agents ARGENTINA/URUGUAY SANYM SA, Tel: +54 11 4311 0205 Email: rpodetti@sanym.com.ar BRAZIL TECSYS COMERCIO INTERNACIONAL LTDA Tel: +55 212 543 9135 Email: tecsysci@gbl.com.br CANADA (WEST COAST) WISEPOOL ENTERPRISES LTD Tel: +1 604 272 1873 Email: wisepool@skyinternet.ca CHILE NEGMARIN SA Tel: +56 32 212617 Email: negmarin@entelchile.net CYPRUS JOHN GIBBON & SONS LTD Tel: +357 5 325644 Email: jgs@jgs-ltd.com DENMARK EBERHARDT AGENCIES & SHIPPING APS Tel: +45 33 13 6616 Email: eberhardt@post6.tele.dk EASTERN BLOC (RUSSIA/POLAND/ CZECH REPUBLIC) BAYSIDE SA 7Tel: +41 22 700 0627 Email: info@bayside-geneva.ch FINLAND MARMEX AB Tel: +358 18 17716 Email: marmex@aland.net FRANCE/SPAIN/PORTUGAL MCC MARINE INTERNATIONAL Tel: +44 (0)1202 709090 Email: murielle@mccmarine.com GERMANY COMBITRADE GMBH Tel: +49 40 44 04 33 Email: combitrade@combitrade.de GREECE ABAX LTD Tel: +30 1 623 2150 Email: info@abax-shiprep.gr HONG KONG SHIPCARE SHIP SERVICES LIMITED Tel: +852 2865 1976 Email: transma@netvigator.com INDIA NAUTILUS INTERNATIONAL (INDIA) Tel: +91 22 284 0878 Email: nautilus@vsnl.in ITALY/SWITZERLAND/MONACO CAMBIASO & RISSO SRL Tel: +39 010 571 4206 Email: maxiguera@crgroup.it CAMBIASO & RISSO SRL (Monaco Office) Tel: +377 97 984050 Email: cambris@tekworld.mc JAPAN TOKYO MARITIME AGENCY LIMITED Tel: +81 35470 1647 Email: hashimoto@tokyomaritime.co.jp KOREA DOO IN CORPORATION Tel: +82 51 415 2032/3 Email: dooin21@unitel.co.kr NETHERLANDS PC MARITIME SERVICES Tel: +31 (0) 224 2950 70 Email: pcms@hetnet.nl NORWAY ULRIK QVALE & PARTNERS A/S Tel: +47 2251 1616 Email: qvale.partners@uqp.no SINGAPORE ZENTAR MARINE PTE LIMITED Tel: +65 225 8648 Email: ac.tan@zentar.com.sg SWEDEN JORGEN KLAVING SHIPPING AB Tel: +46 121 52056 Email: maria.klaving@jkship.se TAIWAN BOMIN Tel: +886 2 8787 9991 Email: taipei@unitor.com USA & CANADA (EAST COAST) PENN INTERNATIONAL MARINE AGENCIES LTD Tel: +1 732 290 0049 Email: loupima@aol.com USA (OFFSHORE) PT INTERNATIONAL, INC. 2411 Fountainview, Houston, Texas 77057, USA Tel: +1 713 780 8999 Email: polarisone@hotmail.com AND FINALLY... a message from the CEO SHIPCARE 24HR HOTLINE A&P have enjoyed business from many new and repeat customers this year and we very much appreciate this. Also in this issue, success for the Group with the return of RFA vessels; the fourth visit of the CSO Orelia to A&P Tyne; innovative triple docking to complete a contract for Wightlink, together with successful P&OSL dockings and the return of the P&O Cruises ship Victoria to Southampton; a major gearbox replacement for the P&OSL Burgundy and fast ferry successes for Falmouth. With this year s ferry refit season just coming to a close, A&P can be rightly proud of the progress they have made in this area of the business. A&P has continued to strengthen their outstanding track record with over 40 vessels completed during the 2000/01 refit season. Over the last three years, the A&P Group has built up an excellent reputation for ferry refits in terms of quality, cost, and redelivery. FERRY SEASON It is now just over a year since A&P launched its revolutionary new Shipcare service and during the ensuing months it has undertaken a broad spectrum of work in a variety of locations. The results that A&P Shipcare has already achieved and the demand we have had for the service confirms that this new level of support we offer our customers is now well accepted. It really does enable vessels to manage their maintenance programmes more efficiently, which, of course, also means more economically. Says Paul Huseman MD of Shipcare. Happy Anniversary A&P SHIPCARE T h e To t a l M a r i n e S e r v i c e RECORD FERRY SEASON FOR A&P P&OSL Aquitaine RECORD FERRY SEASON The A&P Group has demonstrated its capability in the ferry refit market providing drydocking, refit, repair and in-service work for a record number of ferries. A&P Southampton s ability to accommodate customers programmes has been one of its key factors for success and this has been achieved with the innovative double and triple docking of vessels wherever possible. A&P Falmouth has excelled in the repair and fabrication on fast cat aluminium ferries as well as more traditional passenger and RoRo ferries from P&OSL, Irish Ferries and local ferry operators. A&P Tyne has once again provided drydock, refit and repair services to Caledonian MacBrayne and P&O Scotland for their fleets. A&P Shipcare has supported all of these operations by providing in-service work in ports where A&P do not operate drydocks but where customers expect the high standards provided by A&P. Shipcare has been active in and around Portsmouth, Plymouth, Newhaven and Dover to name just a few. Many of the vessels are welcome return visitors, for example P&O Stena Line have entrusted the P&OSL Dover to Falmouth for ten successive years, P&O Portsmouth have docked the Pride of Le Havre in Southampton three years running, and Caledonian MacBrayne have returned to the Tyne for the second year. A&P has had a long association with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels and the securing of four MOD contracts in the first six weeks of 2001 re-affirmed this excellent working relationship. The contracts began with the docking of the RFA Sir Bedivere followed by the RFA Sir Geraint and the RFA Sir Galahad. All three docked at A&P Tyne, the latter two in March for their bi-annual refits. These two contracts provided work for approximately 400 men throughout March into April and follow the successful completion of 10 other contracts during the first six weeks of 2001 on the Tyne. In addition to the contracts awarded to A&P Tyne, the RFA Fort Austin has also been secured by the A&P Group with the work being carried out at A&P Falmouth. return to Tyne & Falmouth RFA SHIPS RFA SHIPS RECORD FERRY SEASON RFA Fort Austin arriving at Falmouth P&OSL Dover 3 Ferries in Drydock A&P Tyne were delighted to see the Coflexip Stena (Offshore) vessel, the CSO Orelia back in their Tyne dock for its general re-fit in March. The CSO Orelia is a multi-purpose diving support vessel; it was originally built by Swan Hunter in 1984 as a flat top barge and later converted to make it readily adaptable for a range of specialist sub sea activities. What makes it a particularly interesting vessel for A&P to work on are its six non-retractable Azimuth thrusters. These are a unique feature to this particular vessel and necessitate a special high dock block arrangement, as the thrusters will not sit on normal dock blocks. During its 25-day docking period, A&P carried out a general re-fit of the Orelia including a major overhaul of the thrusters, tank cleaning and coating, crane refurbishment, anchor and mooring system survey work and overall refurbishment. The fact that this is the fourth visit the Orelia has made to the Tyne facility is perhaps testament to the flexibility, reliability and technical innovation which A&P offers to all its customers. A second lightvessel, TLV17, has since been into Ramsgate for a similar refit together with modifications to its solarisation system and the Trinity House Tender, Vectis has also been refitted by A&P for the ninth consecutive year (formerly using the public slipways at Ramsgate). This region of South East England has not previously had a substantial professional repair service, however, now that the Ramsgate slipways are under the control of A&P this lack of resource has been rectified. The new facility has been recognised and welcomed by both private owners of small pleasure craft based at the marina and commercial vessel owners alike. Private vessels are arriving on a daily basis for a variety of work, comments Paul Huseman, Managing Director. And commercial vessels are also being attracted to the range of services we can offer. So far we have had the Ramsgate ferry terminal tug, Nor Commodore, in for general paint and underwater works, a small private coaster, the Roan, for steelworks plus two pilot cutter vessels with more being booked in each week. All in all we feel we have got off to a very good start. This fleet of eight small ferries service the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth and Lymington with a round the clock ferry schedule. This was quite a coup for us , commented Mike Smith, MD of A&P Southampton Because these are smaller vessels we were able to double and triple dock them with the P&O vessels the Pride of Bilbao and the Pride of Le Havre which meant that we could achieve the pre-Easter deadline for completion and still offer a quality service. A&P DOVER A&P Shipcare has been selected to procure a full range of services for Princess Cruises including technical and mechanical support, chandlery and consumables for the eleven vessels currently operating in Europe during the season. No mention of Dover would be complete without indicating the high level of in-service support provided to P&O Stena Line on their short Channel crossings to France. Shipcare have also used the local slipway to carry out repairs to Barges and small Ferries. A&P FALMOUTH The Shipcare team have been very active, carrying out work from the Shipcare depot in Devonport on various RMAS vessels including the Salmoor, Moorhen, Moorfowl and Salmaid. Our Customer has also been impressed by recent Electrical work on H.M.S. Ocean. Falmouth are shortly to carry out further work, both in the Bay and other local Ports. A&P HELLIFUSION This specialist division of A&P Shipcare has carried out a great deal of spiral welding and related machining work on various items of equipment such as pump impellor refurbishment, seal liner rebuilds & exhaust valve repairs. Many of these refurbishments have been carried out using a range of exotic materials. A&P HYDROPOWER This innovative division of A&P Shipcare specialises in surface preparation of a range of surfaces prior to application of coatings. Although the state of the art equipment is aimed primarily at the Marine business, other applications such as concrete, cold steel cutting and surface abrasion have been successfully carried out. It is not often that a vessel needs its gearboxes replacing but when it does the whole project requires careful planning from the method to the implementation. A&P Falmouth welcomed the opportunity of working with P&OSL on such a complex project and spent several weeks in advance of the vessel s arrival, agreeing and setting up the procedures necessary to ensure an efficient and effective job. The job was secured against stiff competition, explains A&P Falmouth s MD, Ian Pike. I am sure we were successful against other yards because of our technical capability, reliability and competitive pricing as well as the excellent relationship we already have with P&OSL. The P&OSL Burgundy was in the Falmouth yard for a scheduled 40 days during which time it had its annual refit, and two main engine gearboxes completely renewed. The gearbox replacement necessitated extremely accurate alignment procedures of both gearboxes, the shafts and four main engines. The careful planning definitely paid off, commented Ian Pike. The vessel was completed on schedule and has been running well since going back into service. This sort of job doesn t come up very often, but when it does A&P has the capability and flexibility to cope, whether it be a large or small project. Leading shiprepair, conversion and marine services specialist A&P have just completed a successful double with the recent departure of the European Pathway. The Pathway followed the sister ship the European Seaway which docked in Southampton for its annual refit over the Christmas period. Both were completed on time and on budget. The European Pathway, a 22986 GRT RoRo and cargo ferry, brings to a close a record ferry season at Southampton and the group with over 40 vessels being completed during 2000/01 refit season. Both vessels underwent routine drydock and repair work, and following the refit P&O Stena Line were very complimentary about the work undertaken at the yard. For the second consecutive year, this was a first class docking with all parties working well together. We experienced excellent co-operation from all at A&P Southampton during the refit period and were very pleased with the yards performance, completing both vessels on time and on budget. Said Mr Neil Farquar of P&O Stena Line, Dover. Following the refit the two vessels returned to duty sailing between Dover and Zeebrugge. The two ship refit is an example of the ongoing development of the relationship between A&P and P&O Stena Line. Both refits went extremely smoothly and I think the teamwork between all parties to achieve a common goal has been first class, particularly on the Seaway over the Christmas period. Said Mike Smith, MD of A&P Southampton. It further demonstrates the excellent rapport we have with P&OSL and confirms the solid reputation we have built up over recent years here at Southampton in terms of quality economic refit programmes. The work which took place on the Isle of Innishmore included general outfitting, removal of stabilisers for refurbishment and the overhaul of her bow thrusters. All work was carried out on time to the satisfaction of the customer and the ferry sailed on schedule. A&P s workforce are used to the challenge of refitting a diverse range of vessels, and are particularly pleased with these orders as they were secured against stiff competition. Mike Smith, managing director at Southampton, is delighted to be welcoming the Victoria back once again. P&O is the UK s premier cruise company and we believe that their decision to come back to A&P is testament to the continuing relationship we have with them. By utilising our project management expertise and technical capabilities, we offer excellent quality of workmanship together with local logistical support and a track record of flexibility to meet the customer s needs, he adds. On her last visit to A&P Southampton in November 1999, Victoria underwent a major refit. This time Victoria is planned to be in drydock for 12 days. The multi million pound contract was excellent news for the local community as it provided work for up to 500 men including subcontractors during March, April and May in the Wallsend yard. The work included hull preparation and painting, main engine overhaul, repairs to deck machinery and Replenishment at Sea (RAS) equipment, electrical work and an extensive alterations and additions package. The Fort Victoria is one of the most complex vessels operated by the RFA. The 17,000dwt vessel is 203.9m in length and 30m in beam and was built in 1990 at Belfast s Harland & Wolff. The vessel is classed by the Ministry of Defence as an Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) vessel which carries fuel, ammunition, naval stores and food for front line vessels and is designed to support three helicopters and provide second line maintenance for frigate based helicopters. Fred Newman, Managing Director of A&P Tyne commented: We are very pleased that the WSA have once again demonstrated their faith in the skills of our workforce at A&P Tyne by awarding us this prestigious contract, it is excellent news for the yard and Tyneside as a whole . Lapponian Reefer Docks at A&P Falmouth The Cayman Islands reefer vessel Lapponian Reefer has completed a nine day dry docking programme during which she underwent an extensive 10 year survey and repair work. The 11,095dwt vessel, owned by Holy House Shipping, dry docked on 7th January for works which included repairs of internal tank fractures, survey and repairs of sea valves, overhaul of the main engine, survey bearings and turbo charger overhaul. The gearbox was also opened and surveyed and the propeller blades were removed and surveyed. Other works included the removal and renewal of approximately 700m of pipelines on the main decks, repairs of the main deck cranes and renewal of the hydraulics for the free-fall lifeboat. Managing Director of A&P Falmouth, Ian Pike commented: "Once again we have demonstrated our ability to turn around these types of vessels in a very quick time scale which is of great priority to our customer. There have been at least seven reefers completed in the last twelve months in Falmouth which has served to strengthen our overall experience." Welcome.... Welcome.... GREAT NEWS FOR TYNESIDE Welcome to the Spring 2002 edition of the Ships Company , the in-house journal of the A&P Group. The winter season has been very busy for A&P with ferries, cruise and commercial vessels at all of our facilities in the UK, however, we have always managed to accommodate a number of emergency dockings through this period. This is detailed inside this edition. We have been fortunate enough to welcome back old customers to the yards and equally fortunate to have made some new friends too. Our strategy to provide a full long term maintenance service is a success, proven by the various alliances and agreements we have with a number of UK and overseas customers. See more details inside. Shipcare continues to grow in the UK, as is evident from the increasing facilities which are opening around the country, enabling us to provide a widespread service with fast response times whenever you need it. Visit the SHIPCARE web site at www.shipcare.co.uk A&P Shipcare s Ramsgate facility saw an excellent start to 2002, having secured two major contracts in January, February and March. These contracts were the survey vessel Chartwell which is owned by SMIT International (Scotland) Ltd and the Trinity House launch Vectis. A&P Shipcare - Ramsgate has converted the former Port of London survey vessel Chartwell into a training vessel which will be chartered to the MOD. The work involved the moving of the wheel house aft by 1.5 metres and main/auxiliary engine overhauls. The work also included modifications to accommodation areas and a complete face lift of the vessel s appearance which involved changing the colour schemes. During the same period the THL Vectis also visited Ramsgate. This was the eighth consecutive occasion this vessel has been slipped by A&P Ramsgate. The scope of work aboard the THL Vectis entailed the installation of a new auxiliary generating set, a new sea crane on the fore deck and the inspection and overhaul of propeller shafts and rudders. There were also various pipe work renewals, major electrical work and painting. All of this work enabled the operators to increase their slipping periods from one year to two year intervals. The refit, modifications and slipping for the THL Vectis were completed in 34 days. A&P Shipcare operates from several facilities in the UK including Tyne, Tilbury, Chatham, Dover, Ramsgate, Southampton, Plymouth and Falmouth. A&P Group have announced an agreement between A&P Shipcare - Chatham and Metalock Engineering (UK) Ltd proposing an inter company co-operation venture. The foundation of this venture is based on a close working relationship between Metalock and A&P Shipcare which goes back many years. Metalock already regularly carry out works at all A&P locations and are an ISO 9002 accredited company, as are the A&P facilities. The Metalock process is an internationally recognised brand name which is synonymous with marine and industrial repair, the world over. Metalock are not only familiar with ship repair yards, but also the technical departments of the world ship owning community and all the various classification societies. Metalock are building a reputation, which is based on the quality and quantity of their varied services, with work undertaken by the teams of highly skilled technicians. By forming an association with A&P, the venture will increase Shipcare s specialist service to their customers and also yards within the Group and facilitate a broadening of the range of services Metalock can offer. Successful Start to 2002 for A&P Shipcare - Ramsgate Metalock in Chatham A&P Shipcare recently completed the refit of the Trinity House Light Vessel LV21 at the Group s Ramsgate facility. The vessel arrived during early November 2001 for a hull blast and paint programme. This was the fourth vessel from Trinity House Light House Service to slip at A&P s Ramsgate facility since it opened in 2000. The A&P Shipcare team are pleased to continually be given the opportunity to prove how their quality of workmanship and efficiency can give results time after time. SPRING 2002 Page 3 T H E T O T A L M A R I N E S E R V I C E Since its launch in February, we are pleased to say that A&P Group s exclusive club aimed at our technically orientated customers has attracted nearly 100 members! The aptly named ShipCLUB was created to provide our customers with up-to-date news of the A&P Group, promote and provide its customers with technically innovative solutions regarding ship repair and maintenance, promote and organise technical seminars and events and to provide periodic networking opportunities for the ship maintenance fraternity. Since the club formed, we have arranged a technical seminar with Intelligent Engineering which detailed their Sandwich Plate System (SPS) for ship deck repair which was a great success for all attendees. The club has also recently hosted a social event during April when we enjoyed a day at the Grand National with some lucky winners of a draw which was held to randomly select our guests. For all enquiries related to the ShipCLUB including membership, please contact Wendy Jenkins at wendy.jenkins@ap-group.co.uk A&P Group Ship CLUB A&P Falmouth has completed the extensive lay up and overhaul of the P&O Irish Sea fast ferry Superstar Express. The Austal Ships 82 Catamaran, built for Star Cruises and chartered by P&O Irish Sea, arrived in Falmouth on 21st October 2001 for lay up and docked on 6th February for aluminium shell repairs in the forepeak areas; overhaul of the water jets, survey of the main engines, survey of auxiliary machinery, accommodation refurbishment and painting of the hull. The Superstar Express undocked on the 18th February and went back alongside until mid March when she returned to service with P&O Irish Sea based at Larne. The vessel will operate on the Larne to Cairnryan service from 15th March - 15th September. This is the shortest and fastest crossing on the Irish Sea. P&O Cruises Oriana has completed its second refit in A&P Group s Southampton yard. Oriana was in dry-dock between 1st and 12th December, followed by sea trials, and returned into service on schedule on 13th December when the ship departed on her Christmas cruise, with a full compliment of passengers. A&P Southampton s Managing Director, Mike Smith, commented that, the timescale for this refit were extremely tight with only 12 days in dock followed by passengers immediately joining the vessel. By working closely with P&O from the early days of specification preparation it was possible for A&P to ensure that the work was pre-planned in detail and completed within the agreed timescales, ensuring the minimum out of service time for the vessel. The December Oriana refit represents the fifth consecutive refit of a P&O Cruise vessel by A&P, following earlier refits of the Arcadia, Oriana and Victoria (twice). P&O Cruises Technical General Manager, David Strawford added: I was entirely satisfied with this dry docking and refit. A&P Falmouth Completes Superstar Express Overhaul P&O Cruises Oriana returns to A&P Southampton A&P Shipcare recently won the contract to convert the Union Arrow from a mini bulk carrier into a self discharge bulk carrier at its Chatham facility. The vessel, which is owned by the Union Transport Group, arrived in Chatham mid April for a scheduled 12 day conversion period, during which a 40 tonne Samsung crane was installed. Work also included fitting of sloping bulkheads fore and aft, construction and fitting of a main deck insert, construction of a void area to house a bobcat machine, installation of strengthening columns and construction of hatch end coverings. In addition to the above work, the vessel was also fitted with a new generator to provide the extra power requirements of the vessel as a self discharger. Managing Director of A&P Shipcare - Chatham, Paul Huseman, commented: "We are very pleased to have been awarded this contract in Chatham, which progressed very well and we look forward to having the opportunity to work with Union Transport Group again in the future".
