The first contract, which is currently underway in the Hebburn shipyard, involves the refurbishment of the 10,385 grt pipe-laying vessel Seaway Falcon for Stolt Offshore of Stavanger, Norway. The second contract involves the refurbishment of the 3,254 grt Skandi Fjord, an oil well stimulation vessel, owned by DOF Ship Management, Bergen. The Skandi Fjord will arrive at the Hebburn yard on or around May 23 for the twoweek refurbishment contract. The third repair contract involves a first from leading Norwegian tanker and gas carrier owner Bergesen, Oslo. Work will involve the 25,926 dwt liquid petroleum gas (LPG) shuttle vessel Hedda. The vessel will arrive at the yard on or around June 6. David Dobson, A&P Sales Director, said: "It is very satisfying to win these contracts, which help strengthen our commercial ties with Norway. We already have a good relationship with Norway and are particularly pleased to win the first contract from Bergesen, which is one of the biggest tanker operating companies in the world. This is a feather in the cap for A&P and we would hope to build on these three orders and win more work from Norway. These are very valuable contracts in the current climate on the Tyne. These contracts will help maintain the workforce at Hebburn, which boasts the biggest dry dock facility on the UK north east coast. The company is chasing more work all the time and it hopes to announce news of two major contracts next month. A&P Birkenhead retains ownership of the drydocks, but some surplus land will be sold to Reddington Finance. This is a positive development, as it allows A&P to focus on their ship repair business and allows Reddington Finance to focus on developing surplus land at Birkenhead. Clive Towl, Managing Director of A&P Birkenhead commented 2004 has been the busiest since we re-opened the yard after the receivership of Cammell Laird. We look forward to continuing to grow the business in 2005. The vessel is due to arrive in Birkenhead during early June this year (2004). Whilst in drydock, work will include final removal of the hull launch poppets and complete coating of its underwater hull, plus other work as required by BAE Systems. In order to achieve the high standards of paintwork required for the vessel, the hull is to be covered under a special containment system, which will provide protection from the weather and allows heating to be applied to suit the coating application should the climatic conditions not achieve specified requirements. HMS Bulwark is a 18,500 tonne Albion Class Landing Platform Dock (LPD) vessel designed to be used during amphibious assault. She was launched in Barrow-in-Furness in November 2001. The vessel is second in her class to HMS Albion, and is expected to enter service during 2005. The two ships were part of an order placed by the MoD with BAE Systems worth ?450m. The LPDs replace HMS Fearless, which retired from service in March 2002, and HMS Intrepid which was decommissioned several years ago. Clive Towl, Managing Director, A&P Birkenhead Ltd, said We are delighted to be awarded this contract. HMS Bulwark will be the first White Ensign vessel to be worked on by A&P Birkenhead Ltd, and complements other MoD vessels which have recently undergone repairs within our A&P facilities on Tyneside and at Falmouth . This is not the case at A&P Southampton where, on four occasions already this year, the yard has carried out triple drydocking operations involving ferries owned by P&O Portsmouth and Wightlink, and tugs owned by Adstream. The first triple docking occurred during January 2004 for a 16 day period, when two ferries from Wightlink, the fast ferry 764 grt Caedmon and the 2,983 grt conventional ferry St Helen, and the tug Sir Bevois from Adstream. Work included annual drydockings for the two ferries and a full drydocking and main engine overhaul for the tug. The second triple docking, which lasted 22 days during January and February, again involved two ferries and a tug. The largest ferry was P&O Portsmouth s 14,760 grt Pride of Cherbourg, which was in drydock with Wightlink s 761 grt ferry Cenwulf and Adstream s tug Hamtum. Work on the Pride of Cherbourg included annual drydocking, tailshaft survey, preparation and painting, and overhauls to virtually all the engine room equipment including the main engines. The Cenwulf underwent an annual drydocking and, once again showing the flexibility of the yard, the Hamtum was an emergency drydocking for Schottel propulsion repairs. This was followed by three ferries entering the drydock for 16 days during February/March P&O Portsmouth s 33,336 grt Pride of Portsmouth (the same drydocking programme as the Pride of Cherbourg), and Wightlink s 2,036 grt St Catherine and 761 grt Cenred. The latest triple drydocking was carried out over a 16 day period during March involving two ferries and a tug P&O Portsmouth s 33,336 grt Pride of Le Havre, Wightlink s 5,359 grt St Clare, and Adstream s Lady Madeleine. For further information please contact: Wendy Jenkins:- Tel: + 44 (0) 2380 707600 Fax: + 44 (0) 2380 772910 wendy.jenkins@ap-group.co.uk PRESS RELEASE Date of Release: April 28th 2005 Thomson Celebration redelivered by A&P Falmouth The 33,933 grt cruise vessel Thomson Celebration (formerly Holland America s Noordam) has left A&P Falmouth following a five month refit under the supervision of Columbia Ship Management, Cyprus, who will be acting as ship managers for the vessel on behalf of her new owners, Thomson Holidays. With the possibility of 5 super blocks to be constructed, the A&P Dry Docks at Hebburn, Southampton and Birkenhead offer ideal facilities for a portion of this work. In particular, the Hebburn facility with major fabrication capability alongside the dry dock, makes A&P confident that they can play a significant role in supporting the DPA to achieve an optimum solution for the build strategy. A spokesman for A&P Group said the CVF programme will provide the Royal Navy with their two most important surface vessels for the next 50 years and will require commitment from many areas of industry to deliver these vital ships. A&P have been identified by the MoD as one of the organisations who have the people, experience and facilities to bring the project to a successful conclusion by 2015. We have been working with the various CVF project teams for two years and now look forward to the next stage of bidding for build and integration packages. Our dry dock and fabrication facilities located in traditional shipbuilding and repair areas around the UK will enable the programme to utilise vital engineering skills to the benefit the industry, the regions, the Navy and the country. A&P recognise that the programme is a multi-company project and we look forward to working with all aspects of supply chain to deliver these two ships to the Royal Navy . PRESS RELEASE Number of pages: 1 Date of Release: 20 July 2005 ________________________________________________________________ A&P wins Dock Express 20 conversion contract A&P Tyne Ltd, part of UK s A&P Group, has announced that it has been awarded the first phase of a multi-million pound (sterling) conversion contract involving the 14,793 grt Dock Express 20 by De Beers Marine (Pty) Ltd of South Africa. Contact: Dave Skentelbery 07786 660499 PRESS RELEASE Number of pages: 1 Date of Release: March 2004 ________________________________________________________________ Busy march for A&P Falmouth A&P Falmouth, part of the A&P Group, has won two significant orders for March this year (2004). The first involves the 31,290 dwt containership Safmarine Europe, which is part of Safmarine s Great White fleet. The vessel, due on March 12th, will be in the shipyard for 24 days, work including underwater hull cleaning and painting, refurbishment of three deck cranes and renewal of approximately 40 tonnes of steel in the peak tank, deep tank, wing tank and double bottom tanks, cargo holds (including cell guides), hatch covers and shell plating. The second contract is from Sweden s DFDS Tor Line involving the 8,696 dwt freight ferry Tor Anglia, which operates out of Felixstowe. The vessel, which is due on March 4th, will undergo a complete underwater hull blast and paint, cargo gear overhaul and test, removal of the starboard rudder and rudder stock in order to renew the stock seals. This is the second time a vessel from this owner has drydocked in A&P Falmouth, the ferry Admiral of Scandinavia being drydocked in Falmouth during 2002. For further information please contact: Wendy Jenkins:- Tel: + 44 (0) 2380 707600 Fax: + 44 (0) 2380 772910 wendy.jenkins@ap-group.co.uk PRESS RELEASE Number of pages: 3 Date of Release: 12 March 2004 ________________________________________________________________ New oil slop reception facility to boost trade in Port of Falmouth From early April ships visiting the Port of Falmouth will be able to use a brand new service to receive and recycle oil slops, thanks to a joint venture between ship-repair and conversion specialist A&P Falmouth and marine oil terminal operators, Falmouth Oil Services (FOS). The new facility is set to boost trade in the port, providing a valuable service to ships using the busy shipping lanes of the English Channel as well as facilitating faster turnaround on vessels in dry dock which require tank emptying and washout before entering the port. At the moment ships requiring similar facilities have to go to Rotterdam or Le Havre, but this new venture effectively makes Falmouth a one-stop port for shipping. Work to convert an existing oil storage tank is currently underway with modifications to include the installation of carbon filter units to eliminate vapours emitted from the recycling process. Once operational, slops will be processed at the facility to separate the water from the spent oil, which once reduced in bulk, can be recycled. International legislation regarding the prevention of pollution from ships is provided by the MARPOL treaty which was established over 20 years ago to regulate and decrease marine pollution by the worlds shipping. Under the MARPOL treaty ships are prevented from discharging the residues from their cargo tank washings or spent products from their engine room bilge pumps. With tankers needing to clean the inside of their tanks before switching to different cargoes of fuel, vast quantities of oily water are produced, ranging from a few tonnes with smaller ships up to hundreds of tonnes from large tankers. By offering the service at Falmouth, the Port will be able to handle all MARPOL Annex 1 oils, which includes crude oil and gasoline which are classed as low flash slops, meaning that vapour from the oil can ignite, even at low temperatures. Falmouth is the largest, deepest natural harbour in the northern hemisphere and is close to some of the worlds busiest shipping lanes. It has been estimated that half the world s shipping passes within 40 miles of the port every year. The new service will not only increase business for Falmouth Oil Services but it will also make Falmouth more attractive for ship repair contacts. David Daniel, A&P Falmouth's Commercial Director, described the benefits that the new facility will bring to the port: "Currently vessels carrying high flash slops need to discharge their slop tanks before they can come to us for any dry-dock work. With other appropriate facilities so far away we have in the past lost work because it is easier and more time and cost effective for ship owners to have work carried out close to where their slops are discharged. "With all ships needing to discharge their slops at some point we are delighted that soon we will be able to meet demand by offering the service in Falmouth, hopefully helping us to safeguard existing contacts and even attract new work." Christopher Walters, Managing Director of Falmouth Oil Services added: "This new facility is part of a growing range of services offered by FOS and the port of Falmouth, and is likely to have spin-offs for other local businesses by attracting more ships to the port." Slops can be discharged either alongside or in the sheltered inner harbour anchorage or, for larger vessels, in the Falmouth Bay anchorage where there are no draft restrictions. Notes for Editors About A&P Falmouth A&P Falmouth occupies 45 acres of the 75-acre Falmouth Docks site and employs 600 full-time staff. As well as ship repair, the company has a considerable port and dock operation, handling 100,000 tonnes of bulk cargo a year and a growing cruise ship business. Including tenants, the docks employ more than 900 people and support a further 1,400 jobs in the local community. Falmouth is the third deepest natural harbour in the world and its Number Two dock is the third largest dry dock in the UK. It combines a rich heritage of marine engineering skills and experience and provides shipowners with a range of precisely tailored skills wide enough to handle even the most demanding tasks. Looking somewhat tired after a busy operational year, first supporting HMS Ark Royal in the Gulf War and then a period in the north of Scotland, the ship is having an extensive refit. A&P Falmouth Commercial Director David Daniel said that the refit would involve approximately three hundred men per day working on the ship. This is a major MoD contract for Falmouth and one that we are delighted to have won, and is the biggest contract for the docks in its recent history. This is the second multi-million pound refit won by the yard in a month. HMS Endurance the Royal Navy s Ice Patrol Vessel, currently in the South Atlantic, will arrive in June for a four month long refit. The winning of two major MoD contracts in such a short space of time is unprecedented in modern times and sends a clear message that the MoD recognise the quality of work at Falmouth and the importance of Falmouth as a leading shiprepair port. David Daniel explained the work involved in the prestigious contract to refit Fort Victoria. The hull will be fully blasted and painted. Engineering work involves work to the main engines and auxiliaries. Fort Victoria s communications system is to be updated along with other equipment and systems. Modifications to the ship s pipe work, routine repairs and a full painting programme will see around three hundred men employed for most of the summer. HRH The Duchess of York, Fort Victoria s sponsor named the ship in 1990. The multi-million pound Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) when laid down in 1986 represented a new class of one-stop replenishment ship, the concept of which was on the Admiralty Board back burner as long ago as 1980. Originally the MoD planned to build six of the class to support anti-submarine frigates in the North Atlantic, however, the end of the Cold War meant military planners cancelled the remaining four ships. The 31,500 ton ship can carry 12,000 tonnes of fuel and 6,000 tonnes of dry stores. In the late 1990 s Fort Victoria was armed with a Phalanx weapons system For further information please contact: Wendy Jenkins:- Tel: + 44 (0) 2380 707600 Fax: + 44 (0) 2380 772910 wendy.jenkins@ap-group.co.uk PRESS RELEASE Number of pages: 2 Date of Release: February 2004 MoD award the Conversion & Dry-docking of the RFA Fort Austin to A&P Tyne Following the recent successful completion of the refit of the RFA Grey Rover last month, A&P Tyne are delighted to announce that they have been awarded a further prestigious contract by the UK MoD. This has been complemented by the steady growth of the sister facility on Teesside. Despite this success A&P Tyne continues to review its operational costs in an effort to further improve the value offered to customers. Following the successful completion of the Haewene Brim contract at the Hebburn facility, it is A&P's intention to build upon this success by shifting the focus of activity. Previously A&P has been centred at the Wallsend site and operated Hebburn as a satellite, however, the strength of the Hebburn site is such that this situation will now be reversed. Consequently, as from 1 October 2004, A&P Tyne will concentrate repair and conversion operations around the Hebburn site with Wallsend available as an overflow facility. Fred Newman, Managing Director of A&P Tyne said We realised that Hebburn was a significant asset when we initially acquired the site and its true capability has been confirmed by the series of successful conversion projects undertaken there in the recent past. We believe that due to the efficiencies gained the changes will not materially affect the overall throughput of ships seen in recent years, and should it be necessary, the Wallsend yard could be reactivated at short notice." The Hebburn drydock, which is the largest on the North East Coast of England is 259m long x 44m wide at the gate, it has 9.5m water depth over the sill. Craneage services are 2 x 100 Te, 1 x 50 Te and 1 x 25 Te. This drydock can accommodate all vessel sizes up to aframax tankers. There have been a number of modifications to the dock, including the introduction of several recesses in the dock bottom, allowing specialist vessels such as FPSO s, offshore construction vessels, etc., to be accommodated. Additionally the Hebburn yard has an excellent fabrication facility, which can output up to 10,000 Te of steel per annum. The yard is able to handle larger painting and blasting jobs including the removal and treatment of TBT coatings. Further South at the Teesside yard plans are in place to invest in infrastructure changes and capital expenditure to provide a centre of excellence for smaller vessels, in particular offshore support vessels, dredgers, and coastal traders of all types. The Royal Navy's Antarctic Patrol Vessel HMS Endurance has just docked ahead of a multi million pound mid-life refit that is scheduled to take four months. This is hot on the heels of the departure of another icebreaker, the M/V Polar Star, which left Falmouth two weeks ago following a refit. The award of the refit contract is a major coup for A&P Falmouth, as is the first of its type to be awarded to a commercial shipyard for over a decade and demonstrates the expertise and proven track record of Falmouth over other competing yards which also bid for the contract. Whilst in dry dock at Falmouth, refit work on HMS Endurance will include complete hull blasting and repainting, general refit work, steelwork and the overhaul of the main 3,000 hp engines and auxiliary equipment. The fourteen year-old Norwegian built Class-1 icebreaker was originally named MV Polar Circle. The Royal Navy chartered her in 1991 and she was later commissioned as HMS Polar Circle, subsequently being renamed HMS Endurance. Her mission, according to the Royal Navy, is: 'To patrol and survey the Antarctic and South Atlantic, maintaining Sovereign Presence with Defence Diplomacy and supporting the global community of Antarctica'. During her annual seven-month tours of duty of the Antarctic, the ship keeps close links with the Foreign Office, United Kingdom Hydrographic Office and the British Antarctic Survey. HMS Endurance travelled back to the UK last month following a seven-month deployment to Antarctica. On Thursday, A&P Falmouth's Managing Director Peter Child and 4 members of the project team travelled to the ship's base port of Portsmouth to travel with HMS Endurance back to Falmouth. Mr Child said: "We are delighted to have been successful in attracting HMS Endurance to Falmouth and my journey to Portsmouth to accompany the ship to A&P Falmouth is our way of showing the Royal Navy the importance of the contract to the yard. "This is our second refit contract on an icebreaker ship in a short period of time and we have relished the opportunity to work on such specialised ships. We have just received a glowing letter of gratitude from the President of Polar Star's parent company praising the efforts of everyone at the yard for the work carried out on their ship. I can only hope that the completion of HMS Endurance in October will meet a similar seal of approval from the Royal Navy." Only two weeks ago A&P Falmouth completed a seven week refit contract on Finnish built icebreaker M/V Polar Star which is operated as an expedition cruising vessel by Polar Star Expeditions, a company of Karlsen Shipping. M/V Polar Star is equipped to carry up to 105 passengers on expedition cruises that by definition are to remote destinations. On leaving Falmouth the ship is bound for an expedition to Spitsbergen in Norway where passengers can expect to see polar bears and reindeer along with other artic dwelling mammals. The newbuilding hall, which was built during the seventies by Cammell Laird, then part of British Shipbuilders, was, at the time of construction, one of the most modern covered newbuilding slipways in Europe. In the hall Cammell Laird built a number of vessels for the Royal Navy as well as commercial vessels such as the STAFF tankers. At that time it was destined to make Cammell Laird one of the most sophisticated newbuilding companies throughout the world. However, the newbuilding industry in the UK collapsed - with the majority of the world's ship owners looking to the Far East (Japan and South Korea) for new ships at half the price. Following the collapse of British Shipbuilders, BAe took over the ownership of the facility and used it as a module builder for its main yard at Barrow-in-Furness. Although unused for ship building since those days, the facility was maintained and utilised on many occasions for fabrication of modules and sections for other UK shipbuilders and repairers still active in the newbuilding and conversions industries. Although the name Cammell Laird was resurrected as a shiprepairer during the nineties, it was unable to sustain a long term future and thus closed, with A&P taking over the repair facilities during early 2000. Since that date, A&P has developed that part of the shipyard, which originally comprised three graving docks, into one of the most efficient shiprepair centres in the UK, if not Europe. The yard specialises in ferry repairs (fast and conventional) and is now an integral part of what A&P offers the market as one of Europe's leading shiprepair companies. The covered facility, since the closure of Cammell Laird, was to be part of the local ''waterfront' development, which includes a snowdome facility. However, meanwhile, an agreement has now been reached between The Cammell Lairds Waterfront Park and A & P Birkenhead whereby A&P Birkenhead will be the 'preferred' user of the facilities to explore the market for ship building. Reddington, the owners of the Cammell Lairds Waterfront Park, said this marketing research by A & P will run in parallel with the master planning exercise for the regeneration of the area. It is ideally situated to service both the ferry and general cargo traffic in the busy channel port. A&P is celebrating the successful completion of the largest steelwork fabrication contract in the history of its Southampton facility. Pre-fabricating steelwork in the dockside workshops was one of the key factors in winning this valuable contract. Triple Coup for A&P Welcome to the Autumn 2000 issue of The Ships Company Within this issue we include the opening of our NEW FACILITY IN RAMSGATE and the completion of its first order, the acquisition of specialist welding and fabrication company HELIFUSION, the largest steel fabrication work undertaken at A&P SOUTHAMPTON and the continuing development of A&P SHIPCARE. Also included is information on our innovative solutions for supporting the fast ALUMINIUM VESSEL MARKET, the first order for our recently opened ABERDEEN FACILITY and a number of stories on vessels receiving a FIRST CLASS SERVICE from A&P. SHIPCARE S PROGRESS SHIPCARE S Since the launch of A&P s revolutionary new service, Shipcare, it has undertaken work in a variety of locations. Three examples of the type of work currently being carried out by A&P s Shipcare teams are: A&P has acquired the business of Helifusion Engineering Services Ltd. Originally based in Poole, Dorset A&P relocated the personnel and equipment to its Southampton facility which has brought the addition of services such as spiral welding to the A&P Group. Helifusion has expertise in reconditioning components for the nuclear, chemical, marine, defence, water and paper industries to name but a few. The company has undertaken development and consultancy work for both Original Equipment Manufacturer s and end users and can cite a range of case studies from reconditioning railway carriage axle boxes to manufacturing new valve bushes for the nuclear industry. A&P is continuing to increase its service offering to the marine industry through the acquisition of specific services, said Mike Smith, Managing Director of A&P Southampton. Helifusion brings a set of skills which will make A&P increasingly attractive to our customers. A&P Acquires Helifusion RFA DILIGENCE at Devonport, Plymouth Supporting the two week Assisted Maintenance Period (AMP) for the RFA vessel Diligence, Shipcare installed a team of around 8 engineers who worked at Devonport, carrying out a variety of work on the vessel. The Diligence is a forward maintenance vessel with a worldwide role supporting submarines and MCMVs. She has been a regular visitor to A&P s Tyneside yard for dry docking and repair work. Shipcare at Sheerness One of the teams has recently been called out to undertake emergency steel work repairs to a car carrier which had sustained stern damage. This vessel needed immediate attention and a temporary repair in order to allow it to sail and meet its commitments. SHIPCARE WITH NEDLLOYD at Chatham in Tilbury The most recent Nedlloyd ships on which the Shipcare teams have worked are the Resolution Bay and the Jervis Bay, both of which required a quick response to replace and reseal hatch covers on the container holds. Shipcare as a concept is now well accepted by the ship owners as a year round service offered by A&P. It is an innovation which has evolved from the service originally offered by A&P in the southeast, but is now available anywhere. The additional support offered by A&P Shipcare enables vessels to manage their maintenance programmes more efficiently. In addition we are more attuned to the needs of the particular vessel as we are working on them more frequently. This, therefore, benefits the customer because as we are more familiar with the vessel, we can work more quickly and more economically. explains Mark Giles, A&P Group Sales Director. The service can be contacted on 0870 60 7 24 365 seven days a week, around the clock. TRIPLE COUP for A&P TRIPLE COUP It is the first time that Management Company Midocean Ship management of the Isle of Man have used the UK for drydocking vessels from the French fleet owner, Delmas Armament. A&P stemmed the three Ro-Ro vessels; the Romain Delmas, Saint Roch and Roland Delmas, which have undergone extensive drydocking and repair at A&P Southampton in a work programme that ran for an average of 35 days per vessel. The contract was won against fierce European competition. Representatives from both Delmas and Midocean visited Southampton to inspect the yard in May, and the contract was awarded in June. The contract totalled 892 tons of steelwork repairs, an average of 9 ton/day, 175,476 sqm of blasting and paintwork, 682 tons of scaffolding erected for access and a variety of work undertaken to 59 shell/double bottom tanks. We are delighted to have completed these three vessels. There was a large amount of steel deck to be replaced and a jumbo stern ramp to be refurbished on each vessel, explains Mike Smith, Managing Director of A&P Southampton. a significant amount of the steel deck was pre-fabricated in our workshops. By flying teams of engineers out to assess the work required in advance, we started the fabrication work back at Southampton well before each vessel docked. In this way the amount of drydock time was reduced to a minimum. Completed work on the propeller and rudder Repair work being undertaken on a loading ramp Surface preparation and painting Apart from being able to provide all of the traditional shiprepair requirements, A&P Dover are able to provide cruise vessels calling at the Port an excellent chandlery and supply service that can cater for all the needs of a cruise ship. This service can range from the provision of consumable items to engineering stores, equipment and mechanical spare parts for the ships machinery. A&P have visited the purchasing offices in Los Angeles of one of the major vessel operators calling at Dover. This visit was to understand, in more detail, their requirements and purchasing systems so that we could improve on our service to them. Regular visits are made to all the cruise ships visiting Dover, the object being to meet the senior officers responsible for the various departments onboard to discuss and ensure their needs are being dealt with. This service is not unique to the cruise ships and can be, if required, offered to any type of vessel operating not only in the Southeast of the UK but anywhere in the world. A&P ABERDEEN Clinches First Deal AT NEW FACILITY A&P ABERDEEN Clinches First Deal AT NEW FACILITY Coflexip Stena Offshore Ltd construction vessels CSO Orelia and CSO Alliance required equipment to be fabricated and delivered within a very tight timescale. A&P s new facility at Aberdeen, which opened at the beginning of June, was able to meet these strict deadlines by using a mobile workforce to fabricate the items; seafastening frames for the CSO Orelia, delivered to Aberdeen, and two lifting beams for the CSO Alliance, delivered to Immingham. We were very pleased to win this contract , comments Dick Walker, General Manager of A&P Aberdeen. A&P have carried out vessel maintenance and repair for CSOL s Marine Department for many years but this is first work we have done for CSOL Project Teams. This opportunity allowed us to demonstrate our capability for fabrication and engineering outside our standard marine repair and conversion market . The contract was fulfiled within one week, highlighting the benefits of a new local facility from a company committed to offering fast response times. CRUISE CALLERS a t D o v e r CRUISE CALLERS a t D o v e r Fabrication work at A&P Aberdeen Situated at the north end of the Royal Harbour of Ramsgate, the new facility provides an ideal location for servicing the busy channel port for all types of shiprepair. There are four slipways, the largest accommodating vessels up to a displacement of 700 tonnes and an alongside capability to berth vessels up to 105 metres in length and 4.8 metres draught. Adjoining the slipways are well equipped engineering facilities and workshops. The new operation has already won its first contract: the Trinity House Lightvessel TLV24. The light vessel was brought onto slipway number 1 for extensive refit & repair work. The addition of Ramsgate to our range of services already established in and around Chatham and Dover increases the range of work we can undertake and the types of vessels on which we can work. says Paul Huseman, Managing Director of A&P Chatham. The contract to refit and repair the Trinity House Lightvessel is an excellent start for A&P in Ramsgate and we look forward to continued success . A&P Falmouth secured a double docking from shipowner Hoegh for the Mascot and Marlin. The Mascot came into dock on 30th June and the Marlin followed on the 12th July. Both multi-deck general cargo ships which were built in 1977 and share dimensions of 200 metres in length by 30.87 metres in beam. Each of the vessels stayed for 18 days and underwent general refit work which included; UHP blasting and painting, rudder removal and refit, shell steelwork, crane steelwork on their gantry cranes and steelwork in ballast tanks. There were some general repairs; minor engine work, minor electrical cable work, some work on the hatch covers and some UHP blasting and painting of the hold. Hoegh are good customer of A&P. said Ian Pike, Managing Director of A&P Falmouth. We won the contract for these vessels against competition with shipyards in Holland, France and UK. A&P won the contract on our competitive price and our existing credibility with the customer, Hoegh. The two vessels trade between North America, Sheerness UK and Antwerp. A&P OPENS FOR BUSINESS in Ramsgate HOEGH DOUBLE for A&P Falmouth Trinity House Lightvessel TLV24 The Marlin The Mascot A&P DOING STIRLING WORK STIRLING WORK This project involved fitting three large transducers into the hull of the vessel which is made from RAEX 36E Polar steel and capable of withstanding the low temperatures and severe conditions of the polar regions. Specialist welding skills were required for the fabrication and installation of the transducer housings, which were machined to extremely accurate tolerances. A&P Tyne were able to plan and co-ordinate the project to very tight time schedules, which were an essential element of the installation programme. In order to achieve the planned completion date and required tolerances of the installation, A&P developed welding and machining sequences to minimise and control distortion. Monitoring and controlling the critical dimensional tolerances was carried out using a 3D Sokia optical software package operated by specially trained A&P personnel. This equipment enabled sizes to be measured and lifted direct in from the ship, downloaded onto the CAD system and then onto CNC burning machines. Subsequent fitting of unit casings to the hull was completely successful, in full tolerance compliance and with zero rework. In order to carry out the welding of the casings to the ship s hull, entry through confined spaces within the ships double bottom was required. On completion of the welding, 100% ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle inspections were carried out with no defects found, the final tolerances achieved were well within those required by the specification. A&P was delighted in September to welcome the Ernest Shackleton, sister ship to the R.R.S James Clark Ross, for her annual refit and her first visit to A&P Tyne. A&P EXTENDS ITS Aluminium Vessel Capability Being the UK s leading shiprepair, conversion and marine service company, the A&P Group is constantly improving, extending and upgrading its skill levels in order to provide total support to its key markets. So, as the total of fast ferries drydocking at A&P Falmouth alone nears 20, A&P has further extended its capability by sending a number of fabricators/welders to be trained by specialist shipbuilders Incat in Tasmania. In recent years A&P has seen a dramatic increase in the docking of aluminium fast ferries throughout its UK yards for a variety of work. Therefore, to ensure that all vessels receive the highest possible standards of service, A&P are continuing to develop their skills in aluminium fabrication and welding. This has included four of their team being despatched to Incat in Tasmania, the home of aluminium shipbuilders. Whilst there, the men have received additional training in fabrication, welding and the specialised procedures required for working on aluminium vessels. We are committed to developing our service to the Aluminium Fast Ferry market. explained Ian Pike, Managing Director of A&P Falmouth. We have already successfully sent four of our team from Falmouth to Tasmania for specialist training. The skills which they have acquired will then be transferred to other skilled aluminium welders throughout the A&P Group. We believe that this is a clear demonstration of our commitment to all vessels constructed in aluminium and, especially here in Falmouth, the Aluminium Fast Ferry industry. The chilled juice carrier, Southern Juice, left A&P Southampton after a successful refit which was completed on time and within budget. The contract has capitalised on recent innovative developments within the A&P Group. Southern Juice, one of only a few specialist juice carriers in the world, departed from A&P Southampton after the successful completion of her first refit with the company. During her 14 day docking she underwent general refit and repair work, including the removal and renewal of a variety of coatings. Work was also carried out on the main engine and generator, along with the installation of a fast rescue boat and ancillaries. The tank coatings removal was undertaken by A&P Southampton utilising plant from the A&P Group recently acquired subsidiary, Hydropower, and benefiting from using its specialist Ultra- High Pressure water jetting. The process is so effective in removing existing coatings that it allows the re-application to be of a very high quality. The Southern Juice departed for Santos, Brazil where she will resume trading between South America and Europe. The last few months have been important and exciting for the A&P Group and this is examined in this edition by the Group Chief Executive - David Ring. Whilst there is always room for more work, we have welcomed some interesting contracts from new Customers, and we are very appreciative of repeat business from current customers. Shipcare goes from strength to strength with a new facility opened in Tilbury, and several more in the pipeline. Now that we are able to offer more than just routine drydockings, we find our customers wish to review their complete maintenance management plans and with us jointly examine ways in which we can help to make them more competitive. As Autumn moves towards Winter, the A&P Group think of Fe rries, and this year is no exception. With ferries stemmed into all the yards, we look f o rward to welcoming old friends and this season, making some new ones. The next few months should bring A&P s best Fe rry season ever, confirming our reputation as Europe s premier Ferry repair company. This level of support has been carefully developed by matching our customers requirements regarding quality, cleanliness, timely completion and reviewing maintenance budgets to provide the best value for money in the business. It is testimony to the expertise of our workforce that they have continually met and exceeded expectations in this demanding market place, and we look forward to making even greater efforts this season. A&P Shipcare Opens New Facility A&P Shipcare have announced the opening of a new repair facility in Tilbury Freeport, London. The 1975-built American Cormorant was in the Southampton area for a visit to the Combat Equipment Battalion in Hythe. The work completed by A&P Shipcare included various tank repairs which entailed bulkhead steel repairs, steel pipe refurbishment and repairs and replacement of heavy duty plastic pipe, a task which previously had never been carried out by A&P Shipcare - Southampton. A&P also supplied steelworkers and riggers for de-lashing work of her cargo, which comprised three tugs, three landing craft, a crane barge, a flat barge and two LCM (small landing craft), when the vessel was berthed at Gillkicker Point, Solent on 4th June. The second stage of the work involved the removal of deck cargo cribbing arrangements to carry out deck repairs. The operators of American Cormorant - Osprey Ship Management Inc. are said to be very pleased with the work that A&P Shipcare - Southampton had completed and very impressed with the quality of workmanship. A&P Shipcare - C h a t h a m h a v e once again completed the annual alongside refit of the UMD dredger City of London. Wo r k completed during the 14 day period included repairs to the loading and discharging cargo handling equipment, main engine overhauls, electrical repairs, various steelwork and pipework repairs. Mark Williams (Superintendent Engineer, UMD) commented The quality of work performed was to the usual high standard from the Chatham team, all work was completed on time with no delays incurred to the vessels programme. American Cormorant City of London Refitted A&P Shipcare - Ramsgate has successfully completed work aboard the third Trinity House Light Vessel, since opening the Ramsgate facility during last year. The LV10 was slipped for its five year survey, refit for solarisation conversion taking a total of five weeks for the A&P Shipcare team to complete the work, which also included re-preservation of the vessels hull and other essential repairs. Two previous contracts, the repair of Trinity House Light Vessels - LV17 and LV24 involved similar work at the Ramsgate facility, which has the benefit of workshops and four slipways - the largest able to accommodate vessels up to 500 tonnes displacement with alongside capability to berth similar size vessels. A&P Shipcare view that the repeat business attracted from Trinity House is a good reflection on the quality and timely work carried out by the Ramsgate team. Trinity House LV10 Back in Service A&P Shipcare - Dover have recently carried out engine repair works aboard the Andrew Weir vessel Teignbank . The vessel was located in Dunkirk when the work commenced with six A&P Shipcare team members attending. The problem with the engine stemmed from a build up of salt in the air scavenge which was caused by the charge air cooler leaking. The Shipcare team spent 6 days on board the ship while they stripped out, overhauled and rebuilt the engine. During this time the vessel sailed from Dunkirk to Le Havre. A&P Shipcare - Dover A&P Shipcare - Tilbury, from their new facility, have attended the P&O Nedlloyd Container vessels Resolution Bay and Jervis Bay during their recent visits to the Port of Tilbury. Various repairs and overhauls were completed on both vessels including main engines, boiler, pipework renewals and hatch cover repairs. A&P Shipcare is delighted to extend their service to P&O Nedlloyd at the Port of Tilbury in addition to already servicing them in the Port of Southampton.
