He was the son of Espoo native Victor Ek Senior, the proprietor of the central hostelry, and his wife Carolina Gustava (née Hagert). Victor Ek came from modest circumstances, so he was obliged to interrupt his studies at the Swedish state grammar school from the fourth class onwards. He started his future without any appreciable support on the foundation of four years of schooling. Due to the aid, however, of a distant relative, apothecary Knut Kjell, Victor was given the possibility to study abroad: the apothecary noticed that the youth had special talents and skills as well as honest pluck and stamina. Victor studied in Lubeck—at the time a significant German maritime city—at Praktische Handelsinstitut (1879-1880). Victor Ek is seated in this photograph to the left of the column. Following the end of his studies, Victor Ek worked in Lubeck at, for instance, the Piehl&Fehling agency as well as at shipping companies such as Flensburg Stettiner Dampfschiffahrts Gesellschaft and Rudolf Christian Gribel. The ships belonging to the last two maintained traffic between Stettin and Helsinki. Already while in Lubeck, the young Victor Ek entertained the idea of starting his own enterprise in the shipping field upon his return to his homeland. On Victor’s Day in the Swedish calendar in March 1890, the 31-year-old married actress Anna Gertrud Adolfina Waldenström, daughter of the mayor of Karlstad in Sweden. Two daughters ensued from the marriage, Mary (married name Procopé) and Gertrud (married name Cedercreutz). The period of Victor Ek: 1885-1922 >> 2002-2005 Victor Ek Ltd. . By reference to the recommendations duly noted below, I remain, Yours faithfully, Victor Ek". Having established his business on 25 April 1885, Finland’s business life was undergoing a time of rapid growth. The turn of the century meant impetus towards the industrialization of the country. At first, the functions of the enterprise were based on the representation of shipping companies, import and export freight forwarding and fuel deliveries.
