Zim Israel Navigation Company is one of the largest container-shipping companies in the world and the flagship of Israeli shipping. Zim offers transportation services along most of the major international trading routes to customers throughout the world. From its corporate headquarters in Haifa, it operates an intermodal system, which combines sea, land, and air transportation, enabling the Company to provide fast, reliable, frequent, and complete door-to-door services around the world. Of these, 27 vessels are fully or partly owned and the remainder are chartered. On February 2002 Zim took delivery of the 4,839 Teu panamax-sized container vessel "Zim Mediterranean", built at Hyundai Shipyard in South Korea, for the Ofer Brothers. During 2002 Zim is scheduled to receive 5 additional vessels, sister-vessels to the "Zim Mediterranean". These ships are planned to replace seven 3050 TEU ships in the Trans-Pacific trade. These in turn will be transferred to Zim s second global service, Asia-Mediterranean. Hence both global services will benefit from the upgrade. Basic specifications of the new ships: Speed: 24 Knots Length: 294.1 meters Width: 32.2 meter (Panamax). The ship is on a long-term charter to Zim Israel Navigation Co. and will be integrated into Zim s main global service Zim Container Service (ZCS). Zim also operates one coal carrier of 166,013 DWT, and 3 Multipurpose ships capable of carrying bulk, break-bulk, containers and general cargo. Back to top of page Shipping-Related Activities To facilitate its worldwide activities, Zim operates a network of area offices and regional ones. Through its subsidiaries, Zim offers ancillary services such as shipping agencies, storage and distribution, forwarding, and land transportation. Its sophisticated information and communication network enables the Company to locate and control, at any time, the exact whereabouts of every shipment, to optimize the loading of containers, and to facilitate the planning of schedules. Zim's Internet site (www.zim.co.il) offers customers access to on-line data resources and company information. Zim has established a fully-owned subsidiary in Shanghai, Zim logistics (China) which will open more branches in China within a year. Its main business scope includes: forwarding, customs declaration, trucking (inland transportation), inland distribution, NVOCC, airfreight, consolidation services, project service provider, and warehouse management Zim is constantly seeking new related-services ventures, in addition to developing the existing ones, and is prepared for that matter to consider entering joint ventures with other groups. Back to top of page Communication and information Services The Company has developed and operates sophisticated information and communication systems. These systems integrate all of the Company's activities and operations through a worldwide computer network that links over 200 sites. Customers can be linked to the Company's network and benefit from on-line current information. The Company co-ordinates and monitors its fleet of vessels, containers and chassis, in addition to other services it provides, using its modern information and communication systems. The Company's worldwide network includes 3,000 online computer terminals at the Company's head office, area offices, ports and agents' offices, as well as on board vessels. The system is designed to co-ordinate shipping schedules, optimize the loading of containers onto vessels and to facilitate the planning of transportation schedules. The system also processes cargo bookings, generates bill of lading and cargo manifests, expedites customs clearance, facilitates equipment control and the planning and management of intermodal transportation. In addition, the system provides the Company's management with operational data, including monthly financial results and expenses incurred for each voyage, routes, mileage information and other information. ZIM is a GT Nexus network partner, enabling it's customers advanced e-commerce transactions through the net. Back to top of page Trends and developments Zim is committed to improve its position as a leading global container-shipping company. In particular, it plans to intensify the geographic coverage of its route network and increase volume on some existing routes by raising carriage capacity. ZIM introduced a fixed-day weekly service on all its lines, providing additional feeder services and further developing its intermodal services capability. Zim intends to expand its liner network by entering markets that complement its existing route structure, as well as by increasing its presence in developing trades. Back to top of page Quality Assurance Zim has established a quality assurance unit which is charged with obtaining ISO 9002 certification for the Company's units and upholding it thereafter; coordinating ISM (International Safety Management standards); organization and system services; and handling documentation changes and current needs. All Zim vessels comply with the International Safety Management regulations, and Zim is pledged to maintain the highest standards of safety and quality, as well as to comply with marine-environment protection procedures.
