The capacity to lift out vessels of up to 100 tons and work on them in environmentally controlled and secure buildings, added to a skilled and permanent workforce, offers unrivalled service and efficiency to our customers. Refits and repairs are carried out on a wide variety of commercial craft with previous and current customers including the RNLI, the Ministry of Defence, the Environment Agency, Irish Ferries and the Stena line. Repairs are carried out on steel, aluminium, GRP and timber vessels with afloat repairs being carried out on larger vessels such as bulk carriers, coasters, tugs, barges and pontoons, conventional and high speed ferries. Vessel types range from RNLI Tyne, Trent, Arun, Severn & Mersey class lifeboats and Royal Navy 20.5m Archer class warships through to the Irish Ferries Ro-Ro conventional ferry ‘Ullysses’ , arguably the largest of its kind in the world. With our well equipped fabrication and engineering workshops, Holyhead Marine also provides essential services for local industries. Fibreglass ovens for Peboc, fabricated gangways for Octel, the linkspan for Holyheads own fishdock, plus the ongoing maintenance work on the ferries to Ireland are some examples. More specialised work due to the groups experience in running the Single Buoy Mooring at Amlwch on behalf of Shell UK for the full 13years of the contract means that BHP in Liverpool Bay rely on Holyhead Marine for all their floating hose testing, maintenance and storage requirements. These services include the testing, maintenance and repair of flexible floating hoses and associated equipment for the transfer of oil. Hoses of up to 24” bore with an overall assembled length of 350m can be handled. Facilities are available for testing in accordance with OCIMF rules. The company’s Quality Management System has been approved by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance to BS EN ISO 9001:2000. For an insight into the refit of an Archer class Royal Navy warship take a look at our case studies pages. s :HOLYHEAD MARINE: Marine Services Home New Vessels Refit & Repair About / History The Facilities Latest News Jobs Contact Us Links Spares Support ABOUT / HISTORY In the Beginning Founded in 1962 as Holyhead Boatyard Ltd by John Meade in 1962, Holyhead Marine had very sparse beginnings as can be seen from the photographs shown here. The site had previously been used as a dock and warehouse to bring in coal and flour and the same vessel used to also carry passengers to and from Liverpool. By the 1960’s, the surrounding buildings had fallen into disrepair, and the site was a scrapyard. Before work could begin a huge clearing up operation had to be organised. The original method of lifting vessels was through the use of a crane whose motive power was provided by two men taking turns on winding the handles. The vessels were moved around the yard through the use of an old jeep and Goammel truck, a variety of chains and sheer muscle power – a far cry from the modern technology currently employed at the yard. The yard’s first job consisted of the conversion of a fishing boat into a motor sailing yacht. Once this was completed more jobs followed and the next few years consisted of back-breaking work and scrimping and saving to raise the money to improve the yard and build decent workshops. The Early years By the end of the 1960’s the yard was able to invest sufficient money to fill and rebuild the dock, repair & reinforce the sea walls, build a new office block and construct a big new workshop, now known as shed 1. A further storey was added to the offices in 1976. Pictures from current website of early days including shot of Travelift and Renner lift in 1970’s. The Company Today Mark Meade took over from his father as Managing Director of the Holyhead Group in 1992 having joined Holyhead Towing Company 10 years previously following a career at sea. A restructuring of the group took place in which Holyhead Boatyard Ltd became the holding company responsible for the administration and quality control of all the operational companies within the Group of which Holyhead Marine is one. Holyhead Marine has grown from repairing and refitting pleasure craft in the 1960’s to the complete overhaul programmes for commercial vessels such as Environment Agency Survey vessels, RNLI lifeboats, RAF Pinnaces, Royal Navy Archer class warships, pilot and harbour boats, fishing boats & tugs and many other types of craft. The year 1994 marked a significant milestone in the companys’ history for in this year Holyhead Marine built their first commercial vessel, a 21.5m steel multi-purpose vessel. Since then the yard has constructed a wide range of vessels in steel, aluminium and GRP for a variety of commercial customers including the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Berkshire Fire Authority, the Isle of Man government and their own sister company Holyhead Towing. A selection of these vessels may be seen in the Newbuild section of this website. x :HOLYHEAD MARINE: Marine Services Home New Vessels Refit & Repair About / History The Facilities Latest News Jobs Contact Us Links Spares Support :HOLYHEAD MARINE: Marine Services Home New Vessels Refit & Repair About / History The Facilities Latest News Jobs Contact Us Links Spares Support LATEST NEWS - HOLYHEAD MARINE Offshore Raiding Craft to be constructed by Holyhead Marine 21-06-04 The Ministry of Defence has announced the award to Holyhead Marine of the contract to construct the replacement Offshore Raiding Craft(ORC). Holyhead has a bulk terminal jetty which receives raw materials for the local aluminium smelter. The bulk carriers delivering to this berth are normally in the handysize range (25,000 to 40,000 d.w.t.) but vessels from small coasters to panamax sizes can be accommodated. The jetty can take vessels up to a maximum LOA of 235m, with the minimum depth of water alongside of 13m at LWS. Discharge of the cargo is by overhead suction booms that clear to the hold floor. The discharge rate varies with the type of cargo, from about 4000 to 8000 tonnes per 24 hours. The discharge is carried on round the clock, including holidays. :HOLYHEAD MARINE: Shipping Home Bulk Cargos Cruise Liners Offshore Hydrographic Surveys Holyhead Port Port Costs Latest News Jobs Contact Us Links CRUISE LINERS As the local agency at Holyhead, HSA looks after the majority of the visiting cruise vessels, not just at the port, but also at Caernarfon, Llandudno and Conwy. HSA also works with North Wales Tourism to arrange the ground tours for their passengers. If the deep-water berth is unavailable, larger vessels can still take advantage of the shelter provided by the Breakwater at Holyhead, and stay at anchor for the duration of the visit. The ship's tenders then run back and forth to Holyhead Fish Dock, which provides sheltered floating pontoons for the safe landing and embarking of the passengers. :HOLYHEAD MARINE: Shipping Home Bulk Cargos Cruise Liners Offshore Hydrographic Surveys Holyhead Port Port Costs Latest News Jobs Contact Us Links OFFSHORE Because of Holyhead's central location in the Irish Sea, and with the supporting infrastructure coming into place, an increasing number of research vessels, anchor handlers, and supply vessels are using the port as a support base. With our satellite-based navigation systems, we can offer unrivalled accuracy for all types of marine works. Our personnel can install and configure the equipment for works such as hydrographical and geophysical surveys, dredging, construction, salvage, rig positioning, seafloor engineering, ferry guidance, and general oceanography. Pre-plotting, calculating local datum transformations, post-processing and editing of the raw data and plotting of the results are all undertaken in-house. Master GPS Reference Station Comprising of an Ashtech G12 GPS board and L-band antenna, which uses dedicated, separate and parallel channels to receive up to 12 satellites' almanac and ephemeris information. The differential correction data is then calculated and transmitted via a UHF data link which can cover an area of up to25 Km radius. The master station's location, if unknown, can also be established to within centimetre accuracy using the same equipment over a period of 24-72 hours. TidalLite Portable Tide Gauge System , For the measurement and logging of the local tide information. A UHF datalink is also provided to transmit the tide information directly to the mobile stations. Mobile DGPS Survey Station Comprising of a model 5012 DGPS receiver and data logger, plus helmsman controller. Various peripherals can be interfaced directly to the 5012 and their data logged along with the DGPS positions and times. The positional information can also be displayed on the helmsman controller's screen, which can also display survey lines, vessel shape, dredge area, buoy position information, etc. GPS positions can be transformed to a local co-ordinate system, and displyed as such. Peripherals to the 5012 receiver include tide gauge receiver, compass, echo sounder, track plotter (or laptop), plus the helm display and differential UHF data link.receiver. Mobile DGPS Navigation Station Includes a CSI GBX-PRO high accuracy GPS/Beacon receiver, UHF data link receiver, helmsman controller and sophisticated Datalux thin-screen display, (which can display fixed positional information such as coastline etc., as onboard the Mobile DGPS Survey Station) plus tide gauge receiver. These could be installed, for example, onboard a dredger, where the driver can monitor the positional information and tidal heights. The instruments can also be interfaced with the dredger's own equipment to control the digging depth etc. Data Processing The logged data can be post-processed and plotted using various different techniques, such as 2- or 3-D plots, TIN representations, cross-section or by volume, etc. The poweful software can edit the data, removing obvious anomalies, creating smoother fits. When working in a local datum, rather than the satellites' own WGS-84 datum, geodetic transformation programs enable the calculation of the shifts between datums. This increases the accuracy of the positioning in the local co-ordinate system. :HOLYHEAD MARINE: Shipping Home Bulk Cargos Cruise Liners Offshore Hydrographic Surveys Holyhead Port Port Costs Latest News Jobs Contact Us Links Holyhead Port The New Harbour is a large area of sheltered deep water - 650 acres (over 260 hectares) with a basin of over 10m water depth at LWS. This vessel has been designed around the aluminium hull form of a 6.4m Workstar for the Royal Berkshire Fire Authority to provide a solid platform with a very shallow draught for operating in restricted waterways. It is ideal for use as a rescue launch, survey vessel, harbour maintenance launch & multi-purpose workboat. The vessel is powered by a lightweight Steyr 164 Hp marine diesel engine coupled to a Hamilton 241 waterjet through a Hurth HSW 450 A gearbox giving an impressive power to weight ratio resulting in speeds in excess of 25 knots for a duration of up to 4 hours. As a result of careful selection of equipment and its lightweight yet solid structure the vessel is light enough to be launched and recovered through the use of a trailer. A large open foredeck provides sufficient workspace for a crew of 4 to work the vessel & stow equipment up to a combined weight of 1 tonne. In its role as a fire & rescue craft the vessel has sufficient deck area to recover and carry as many as 3 stretcher borne casualties whilst allowing the crew of 4 to cox and man the vessel effectively. Lockers in the bow and stern provide watertight stowage space which may be adapted to suit the requirements of any inventory of firefighting, rescue or other equipment. At the transom, the vessel is fitted with a jet-guard doubling as a recovery platform from which a Jasons cradle may be deployed. The cut away transom area means that any casualties or equipment coming aboard may be moved quickly and efficiently inboard. A small towing post attached to the aft end of the engine box gives the vessel the ability to tow with a bollard pull in excess of 0.5 tonnes.
