PORT OF LISBON THIS IS NA EXCELLENT DEEP WATER NATURAL PORT IN THE RIVER TAGUS, ON THE ATLANTIC COAST. IT HAS ONE OF THE BEST EUROPEAN LOCATIONS ONLY 15 MILES AWAY FROM THE MAIN SAILING ROUTES, AND AS SUCH A PRIVILEGED STRATEGIC AXIS FOR ANY SAILING OR TRAFFIC OF GOODS (BE IT IMPORT OR EXPORT) ACTIVITIES AT A WORLD LEVEL. LISBON HAS BEEN, FOR OVER A MILLENNIUM, THE MAIN GATEWAY TO PORTUGAL AND STILL CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE MAIN EUROPEAN PORTS.WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERFACED TRANSPORT, THE PART LISBON PLAYED BECAME EVEN GREATER. IT IS PRESENTLY A VITAL TRANSHIPMENT AND CARGO DISTRIBUITION CENTRE, HAVING REACHED NA AGREEMENT WITH A 2ND LINE INTERFACE TERMINAL WITH THE GOAL OF CREATING A GREATER EFFICIENCY IN THE TRANSIT OF CONTAINERS. LOCATION LATITUDE: 38? 42 N LONGITUDE: 9? 11?W THE ALCANTARA TERMINAL SANTA APOLONIA/XABREGAS CONTAINER TERMINAL CHARACTERISTICS THE SANTOS TERMINAL ROLL-ON/ROLL-OFF BULK TERMINALS SOUTH BANK LIQUID BULK GOODS NORTH BANK LISBON IS, AS A CARGO MOVEMENT POLE, THE ENTRY TO ONE OF THE GREATEST CONSUMER AREAS OF EUROPE THANKS TO PORTUGAL HAVING JOINED THE EUROPEAN UNION IN JANUARY 1986. THE ADVENT OF THE SINGLE EUROPEAN MARKET (JANUARY 1993) ALSO OPENED NEW IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS BETWEEN LISBON, SPAIN AND THE REST OF EUROPE VIA ROAD, RAILWAY AND CABOTAGE. THE TRADITIONAL OCEANIC ROUTES HAVE KEPT THEIR IMPORTANCE FOR LISBON, WHICH CONNECTS IT TO OTHER IMPORTANT GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS SUCH AS: AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND; NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA; WESTERN AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE END FAR EAST. LISBON S PORT OCCUPIES A SUBSTANTIALPART OF THE TAGUS ESTUARY, BEING 25 KM LONG AND 2 TO 14 KM WIDE. THE PREAMAR HAS A MAXIMUM VALUE OF 4,4 METRES. THE MAIN ACCESS CANAL TO THE PORT HAS A 14.5 METRE DEEP BOTTOM REFERRING TO THE HYDROGRAFIC ZERO. LISBON IS A MULTIPURPOSE PORT THAT YEARLY MOVES ABOUT 13 MILLION TONS OF MARITIME TRAFFIC. THE TRANSIT OF CONTAINERS IS PARTICULARY IMPORTANT FOR LISBON, WHICH POSSESSES REGULAR EUROPEAN AND SPANISH COASTAL SERVICES. IT ALSO HAS A GREAT NUMBER OF DIRECT SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE MAIN CONTAINER SHIP LINES. NATIONAL SHIPOWNERS ALSO WORK IN THESE AREAS, CONNECTING LISBON TO THE AZORES AND MADEIRA, AS WELL AS THE PALOP S (AFRICAN COUNTRIES WITH PORTUGUESE AS THEIR OFFICIAL LANGUAGE). THE ALCANTARA TERMINAL ITS DOCK IS PRESENTLY BEING PROLONGED BY 20 METRES (IT IS 1,100 METRES LONG), AND WILL THEN HAVE TWO MOORING POSTS FOR BIG CONTAINER-CARRIER SHIPS WITH 14 METRES OF LOAD DISPLACEMENT. PRESENTLY IT ONLY HAS ONE MOORING DOCK 300 METRES LONG AND 13 METRES DEEP (ZH). THE REMAINING DOCKS ARE 330 METRES LONG AND 11.5 METRES DEEP (ZH). IT HAS TWO RAIL POST-PANAMAX ENTRANCES AND ONE ON TYRES. USING ROLLING BRIDGES, THE IMPROVEMENT IN THE DOCK THAT THE PRESENT WORK WILL CREATE (ESTIMATED TO BE FINISHED BY MID-2000) WILL INCREASE THE PRESENT CAPACITY OF THE DOCK FROM 170,000 TEUS/YEAR. THEN IT WILL BE ENDOWED WITH TWO NEW POST-PANAMAX DOCK ENTRANCES, WHICH ALLOW SHIPS OF UP TO 18 ROWS OF CONTAINERS TO BE HANDLED. THE PORT OF LISBON HAS ITS OWN RAILWAY BRANCH, 300 METRES LONG AND CONNECTED TO THE NATIONAL NETWORK. 25% OF THE CONTAINER TRAFFIC EXISTS THE PORT THIS WAY. LISBON HAS TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THIS CONNECTION WHICH ALLOWS IT TO FEED AND RECEIVE GOODS FROM VIGO AND THE NORTHERN PART OF THE COUNTRY. THERE ARE 110 CONNECTION POINTS FOR REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS. THE ALCANTARA DOCK WAS ALSO THE ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE POINT FOR VARIOUS LINERS THAT MADE HISTORIC CROSSINGS OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THIS CENTURY. IT ALSO PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE PORT OF LISBON. PRESENTLY, TOGETHER WITH THE PASSENGERS OF THE GREAT CRUISING LINES, THE MOVEMENT OF GOODS (MAINLY CONTAINERS WHICH IS A CONCESSION GRANTED TO LISCONT TILL THE YEAR 2015) PLAYS A VERY IMPORTANT PART NATIONALLY. SANTA APOLONIA/XABREGAS CONTAINER TERMINAL UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF THE MARITIME-PORT POLICY, THE BIDS WHICH HAVE BEEN PUT IN FOR THE CONCESSION OF THIS PORT (THE CONCESSION INCLUDES THE PRESENT TERMINAL AND THE EXPANSION WORK BEING CARRIED OUT IN THE XABREGAS TERMINAL ARE CURRENTLY BEING EVALUATED. THE PRE-ESTABLISHED PROJECT HAS TWO PHASES, WITH THE FORESEEN DATE FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE CONCESSION FOR THE NEW TERMINAL BEING AWARDED IN SEPTEMBER 2000. CHARACTERISTICS 870 METRES OF WALL, SERVED BY THREE DOCK ENTRANCES; 8.5 METRES OF DEPTH AVAILABLE; 80,000 M2 OF TOTAL AREA FOR THE HANDLING AND STORING OF CARGO; MOVEMENT CAPACITY OF 135,000 TEUS / YEAR; 3,500 TEUS OF STORING CAPACITY; 110 ENERGY POINTS FOR REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS; 300 METRES OF INTERNAL RAILWAY NETWORK WITH CONNECTION TO THE NATIONAL NETWORK; A 30,000 M2 WAREHOUSE, OUTSIDE THE TCSA, AVAILABLE FOR UNLOADING AND STORING; AVAILABILITY TO OPERATE ROLL-ON/ROLL-OFF SHIPS WITH A LATERAL RAMP; AFTER THE WORK IS FINISHED, THE FUTURE CONTAINER TERMINAL WILL GIVE THE XABREGAS AREA A MOORING COAST OF 450 METRES WHICH WILL BE 10 DEEP (ZH). IT WILL ALSO HAVE A 15 HECTARE AREA OF ARTIFICIAL PLATFORMS. SEVEN OF THESE WILL BE NA INCREASE CREATED BY THE NEW WORK, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED BY THE END OF 1999. THE SANTOS TERMINAL THIS IS 464 METRES LONG AND 8 METRES DEEP (ZH). IT IS COMMERCIALISED BY TRANSINSULAR WHICH HAS ITS OWN FLEET OF SHIPS (BULK GOODS AND CONTAINER-CARRIERS). IT IS EQUIPPED WITH THREE RAIL CRANES AND HAS 90 CONNECTIONS FOR REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS. THE STORING AREA IS OF 1,500 TEUS. THE MAJORITY OF GOODS COMING AND GOING TO MADEIRA, AZORES, CAPE VERDE AND OTHER PORTUGUESE SPEAKING AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE HANDLED AT THIS PORT. ROLL-ON/ROLL-OFF THE LISBON PORT HAS A TERMINAL ESPECIALLY FOR ROLLING CARGO SITUATED IN THE WESTERN AREA OF THE ALCANTARA DOCK. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH A 40 METRE LONG FLOATING PIER WHICH IS 25 METRES WIDE AT ONE END AND 20 METRES WIDE AT THE OTHER. THIS TERMINAL IS SITUATED AT THE END OF NA ADVANCED DOCK AND HAS ITS OWN STORING AREA. THE CARGO CAPACITY OF THIS PIER IS OF 100 TONS. THE LOADING RAMP IS 10 METRES WIDE AND HAS A 2.5 METRE SLIPWAY. BULK TERMINALS THE LISBON PORT HAS TERMINALS FOR SPECIAL CARGO ON BOTH SIDES OF THE RIVER, WITH THE HANDLING OF LIQUID BULKS AND OTHER SENSITIVE CARGO MAINLY CONCENTRATED ON THE SOUTH BANK, AWAY FROM THE CITY. OTHER SPECIAL PLACES FOR BULK GOODS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED ON THE NORTH BANK AT VILA FRANCA DE XIRA. THESE GOODS INCLUDE CEMENT FACTORIES AND CEREAL SILOS. THE BULK GOODS THAT ARE MAINLY MOVED AT THE LISBON PORT ARE: CEREALS, CEMENT, IRON AND OTHER MINERALS; COAL AND COKE; OIL PRODUCTS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES; AND ALIMENTARY PRODUCTS. THE BULK GOODS ARE HANDLED IN SPECIAL INSTALLATIONS WHICH EXIST AT PRIVATE AND INDUSTRIAL TERMINALS. SOMETIMES THEY ARE HANDLED IN DOCKS DESTINED FOR THE COMMON USER. FLOATING CRANES AND BARGES CAN ALSO BE USED WHENEVER NECESSARY TO TRANSPORT THE BULK GOODS TO AND FROM THE SHIPS THAT ARE MOORED ON THE RIVER TAGUS. SOUTH BANK SOLID BULK GOODS ATLANPORT THIS IS A 750 METRES LONG DOCK WITH A DEPTH THAT VARIES BETWEEN 9 AND 10.5 METRES (ZH). SEIXALINHO THIS IS A 49 METRE LONG DOCK WITH A DEPTH VARYING BETWEEN 4 AND 8 METRES (ZH). IT HANDLES MOSTLY ANIMAL FOODER, FERTILISERS AND RAW MATERIALS AND FINISHED GOODS FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. NATIONAL WELDING IT HAS A 350 METRE LONG DOCK WITH A DEPTH VARYING BETWEEN 4 AND 5.5 METRES (ZH). HERE MOSTLY IRON ORE AND COAL AND COKE ARE HANDLED. TRAFARIA THIS DEEP WATER TERMINAL OCCUPIES AN AREA OF 14 ACRES AND IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST IN EUROPE, WITH A TOTAL STORING (MAINLY CEREALS, OIL PLANTS AND OTHER AGROALIMENTARY PRODUCTS) CAPACITY OF 200,000 TONNES. IT CAN RECEIVE PANAMAX AND CAPESIZE SHIPS. ITS MAIN DOCK IS 254 METRES LONG AND BETWEEN 14 AND 17 METRES (ZH). THE SECONDARY DOCK IS 235 METRES LONG AND 12 METRES DEEP (ZH). PALENCA IT HAS TWO MAIN DOCKS ONE TO RECEIVE SHIPS UP TO 80,000 DWTS AND 14.5 M OF LOAD DISPLACEMENT AND THE OTHER TO LOAD AND TRANSFER CARGO IN SHIPS UP TO 35,000 DWTS. LIQUID BULK GOODS BANATICA IT IS 105 METRES LONG AND 11 TO 14 METRES DEEP (ZH). PORTO BRANDAO IT IS 288 METRES LONG AND 11 TO 14 METRES DEEP (ZH). ROSARINHO 30 METRES LONG AND -7 TO -9 METRES DEEP (ZH) PORTO DOS BUCHOS 45 METRES LONG AND 10 TO 12 METRES DEEP (ZH). BARREIRO 215 METRES LONG AND 6.2 TO 8.5 METRES DEEP (ZH). NORTH BANK BEATO IT HAS A STORING CAPACITY FOR 120,000 TONS, AND IS ABLE TO RECEIVE SHIPS UP TO 30,000 DWTS. IT HAS A RAILWAY LINE THAT IS DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE NATIONAL NETWORK AND THAT ALLOWS GOODS TO BE DELIVERED DIRECTLY. IBEROL THIS IS A FLOATING DOCK WITH MOORING FACILITIES AND A DEPTH OF 3 METRES (ZH). IT IS MAINLY USED FOR THE IMPORT OF OIL PLANTS. MOAGENS ASSOCIADOS THIS HAS A 140 METRE LONG AND A 3 METRE (ZH) WIDE DOCK-BRIDGE. ITS CONCESSION-HOLDER HAS SILOS WITH A CAPACITY FOR 20,000 NOS. PASSENGERS AS A CRUISE PORT, LISBON COULD NOT BE BETTER PLACED. THIS PORT IS CLOSE TO THE MEDITERRANEAN AND GIVES EASY ACCESS TO MAROCCO, THE CANARY ISLANDS AND MADEIRA. IT ALSO IS ADEQUATE FOR CONNECTION TO THE NORTH OF EUROPE. THE LINERS CAN MOOR AT ROCHA AND ALCANTARA (950 METRES LONG IN TOTAL), AS WELL AS IN THE MODERN SANTA APOLONIA TERMINAL, WHICH LIES NEXT TO THE MAIN TRAIN STATION. THE MOORING ALONG ITS DOCKS IS ALSO AVAILABLE AT PERIODS OF GREAT TRAFFIC. THE THREE TERMINALS LIE WITHIN EASY WALKING DISTANCE OF THE TOWN CENTRE WITH AN EASY ACCESS FOR ORGANISED EXCURSIONS AND OTHER SERVICES. PLEASE CHECK BEFORE FIXING.
