Amundsen came to Portugal, from T nsberg Norway, in January 1955, to work for one of the leading Port Agents at the time "Otto Wang Lda" who were general agents for Wilh Wilhelmsen for whom he had sailed previously. He became a partner of this company very soon and developed their business on the Cruise and specialised cargo side. The first Cruise Vessel handled by Mr. Amundsen was the "Stella Polaris" from there on many other vessels, called Lisbon consigned to Mr Amundsen, including Meteor and the Royal Viking Line Vessels. Mr Amundsen was asked to take care of the Norwegian Consulate in 1969 and was nominated Norwegian General Consul in 1972. Royal Viking Line was incidentally the only Cruise Line, with Amundsen's guidance, to Visit Portuguese Ports without changing their schedule, in the turbulent times after the Portuguese Revolution 1974. Amundsen had the pleasure of overseeing the first call of a RoRo vessel the "Lalandia" in Lisbon in 1973. Amundsen's Agency activities grew with the handling of more and more specialised cargo vessels and Passenger Vessels consigned to them. New company's were formed and consulted Amundsen on their activities relating to Portugal, Sea Goddess, Seabourn Cruise Line as well as joint ventures like ScanMel , ScanAustral, Scancarriers and ScanDutch as well as countless others consigned their vessels to Amundsen. With the break-up of these joint ventures Amundsen was in a position of having a large company which needed streamlining and when Nedlloyd were looking to purchase an Agency, they bought Amundsen's Otto Wang Lda in 1990, to day it is P&O Nedlloyd Portugal. Amundsen started procedures to establish a company after he had served a period as Managing Director for Nedlloyd, but opted to look after a friends, Company "Lasal" where his son was employed. Amundsen had the pleasure of all the principals he represented in Otto Wang moved to his new setup within 3 weeks. The Amundsen Father and son team were working together for the first time. They made more new friends and got involved in the Fruit trade representing Dole and CapeSpan. Amundsen established a crew change department, which managed to make a crew change on a Seismic in less time than it would usually take to clear the vessel in and clear it out of the Port. Amundsen always stayed on the forefront of the Portuguese shipping community. In 1997 the Amundsen's decided to establish their company and did so together with Partner. The Principals this time followed as well, the slowest taking a week. This prompted the closure of Lasal and Amundsen employed all the staff who did not retire as well as purchasing a large amount of the assets. Amundsen Agentes de Navega o Lda is called this because in a conversation with a principal Amundsen was commenting with the principal that he had not decided on a name for the company and the Principal said. "Amundsen is a known in our circles as "Shipping in Portugal" Amundsen has the honour of being the only agent to have had a cruise ship call the resort town of Cascais just outside Lisbon. Amundsen is also the only agent that was able, after taking full responsibility with the authorities, to have a Turnaround in Cascais Bay as well as bunkering at anchorage During the Pilot Strikes in 1998. These operations saved the principals considerable amounts of money as they would have to wait until the strike ended, to Bunker. Or they would have to seek a Spanish Port to land the passengers and change all the repatriation arrangements.
