Figaro a large Pure Car and Truck Carrier CMP forside Frontpage | Contact | Search | Links | Danish-Swedish dictionary Figaro a large Pure Car and Truck Carrier CMP is an active port handling a great variety of cargo. Turnover amounts to 15 mio. tons of cargo per year. One of CMP's business areas is New Cars. Handling of New cars via CMP has developed rapidly - it is almost unbelievable During 2005 CMP will handle almost 350,000 New Cars via ship and rail. This figure shall be compared with the 2001 turnover of 26,000. During the four year period CMP is established as an International Hub for the distribution of New Cars. In container business the Hub concept has existed for some 20 or 30 years. In the 1970ties and 80ties the system with port operating Ocean going vessels and feeder vessels was developed. Ports co-operating perform the widely accepted transport mode for containers. In transportation of New Cars you have a different situation. Container transport has been developed but a similar system is being copied in transportation of New Cars. Today that business is setting standards for future transport. Being Danes or Swedish we can be proud that CMP is part of this development. On this Sunday December 11th two Pure Car and Truck Carriers and one feeder vessel EMS Highway called CMP. In order to promote Malmo, Sweden's third greatest city, as a new player amongst exciting cruise destinations, a new Cruise Malmo Network was established on November 22nd 2005. Malmo is located in the Strait of Oresund just opposite the well-known cruise port of Copenhagen. The two cities are bridge connected and it takes only one hour by train or bus to reach one city centre to the other. The ports are both operated by the joint company: Copenhagen Malmo Port AB and in order to take advantage of the synergies available, the new Network will apply for membership in Cruise Copenhagen Netwok. During its twelve years of existence this Network has achieved great success for the Region. The Cruise Malmo Network has of today 14 members and Mr. Per Schmidt, General Manager Cruise Dept, Copenhagen Malmo Port, was elected chairman and Mr. Lars Carm n, Managing Director of Malmo Tourism, was elected vice chairman. The leader of the Secretariat in Malmo will be miss Katarina Olsson. "We all have great expectations of Cruise Malmo Network. Last year Malmo had 2 cruise calls and we expect over a few years to welcome 10 - 20 cruise calls in Malmo every year" says Per Schmidt, the Network's new chairman. It is known that Cruise is the fastest growing tourist industry, especially in the Baltic area at the moment. The cruise industry is a global business and world-wide a total of 400 different ports are called at. As we also know for a fact that international cruise lines are constantly looking for new destination, it is believed that Malmo certainly is a good choice for cruise passengers in the future to come. Copenhagen Malmo Port (CMP) is the leading Cruise Port in Northern Europe. In 2005 a total of 282 cruise vessels carrying 380,000 passengers visited Copenhagen. The port has obtained great expertise which will now be used in strengthening synergies in future developments of the Oresund Region. Copenhagen was awarded 2 prizes by World Travel Awards, viz: "World's Leading Cruise Port" and "Europe's Leading Cruise Destination" at a big event in Royal Opera Hall in London last week. The terminal's main customer on Nordhavnsvej at the moment is MultiBrand Support, which represents brands like Nissan, Chevrolet and SsangYong. SkandiaTransport prepares the cars for the market and delivers them to the dealers. All three brands arrive in Copenhagen by ship. Toyota cars for Funen and Sealand are also processed at the new terminal. SkandiaTransport prepares the cars for the Danish market too, but in practice, that work is done at Toyota's terminal in Malmš, where the Japanese automobile giant's ships call. "Of course we would prefer to take care of both preparation and transport for our customers. When we are in charge of both, it cuts the time to market," explains Lollo Ellebaek who is in charge of the transport side. The Copenhagen Terminal delivers cars to dealers 3-4 days after they arrive in the port. "Herringbone" The new terminal has room for about 1,000 cars. They are lined up in a "herringbone" pattern, which takes up a lot of space but makes it easy to "pluck them out" when they are ready to continue their journey to the dealers by lorry. The terminal consists of over 30,000 m2, a 1,800 m2 preparation centre and a separate car-wash facility so water and steam are kept separate from the actual workshop building. "Everything is brand new and the latest technology. The environment is one of our top priorities, so we recycle water from the carwash, and the extractor unit in the workshop is extremely efficient, Ellebaek explains. "The cars are handled in such a way that we minimise the risk of damage and we apply the lessons we have learned at our plant in Sweden. One example of how the whole design helps cut the risk of dents and scratches: the roads in the parking area are all one-way, so there is no oncoming traffic! Investing in growth SkandiaTransport expects to have won a major share of the Danish market within five years. The number of cars is expected to rise from 10,000 in the first year to 30,000 two or three years down the line. "We want to attract new brands as well. More brands would mean a more even workflow. It fluctuates significantly at the moment depending on when car ships dock. More car brands would also make it easier to exploit empty space on transporters, e.g. from Copenhagen to Kalundborg." "Right now, it is all about getting the terminal up and into top gear," Kollo adds enthusiastically. He is one of three Swedes currently working in the terminal, which employs a total of 10 people. Difficult market SkandiaTransport is currently negotiating with several automobile manufacturers in an attempt to lure them to the terminal. Competition is extremely fierce in automobile logistics, an industry with a tradition of short-term contracts and tendering on price and delivery. "Time, quality – e.g. as little damage as possible - and especially price all play a major role in our industry," production manager Ulf Broqvist says. He has borne the brunt of establishing the new terminal in Copenhagen. Car news CMP forside Frontpage | Contact | Search | Links | Danish-Swedish dictionary Car news Norwegian car company opens in Malm Autolink, the market leader in preparing and transporting cars in Norway, has acquired Copenhagen Malm PDI AB (CMPDI). The Autolink MD, Lars Olsen, accounts for the move by noting that more and more of the major automobile manufacturers are centralising their Scandinavian distribution and preparation of cars – including Toyota and Honda. He also thinks that several other players are on their way to Malm . "Autolink wants to be part of this development, and the acquisition of CMPDI will make us one of the market leaders in automobile logistics in the Nordic Region," he says. The Malm plant will take over work currently done in Drammen but the idea is also to strengthen Autolink's position in Denmark and Sweden for the preparation of cars for the market. Honda rolling New Hondas bound for Scandinavia have been passing through CMP since October. The cars arrive in Malm from Ghent in Belgium twice a week. They are dispatched to dealers in Denmark and the South of Sweden in transporters, to the north of Sweden and Norway on special car trains and to Hang in Finland by ship. Nordisk Motortransport, which has opened a new 130,000 m2 terminal in Malmš, deals with the PDI. Harbour basin as parking space CMP has applied to Malm Council for permission to use a basin at Frihamnskajen as a landfill site to provide 50,000 m2 of parking space and meet the need for extra space to cope with the many new cars being landed in the harbour. The idea is to use landfill materials that will be relatively easy to remove again, so the basin could be opened up again at some point in the future if necessary. Super week In the week from 5 to 12 September, 14 car ships called at CMP: 10 feeder ships and 4 overseas car carriers. They loaded and unloaded 9,500 passenger vehicles. New car manager at CMP Bart Steijaert (29) will be the new head of cars at CMP from the New Year. Bart comes from Toyota, where he was Assistant Manager and helped set up and run Nordic Hub Malm . The current car manager, Tommy Svensson (62) has worked in the port for 41 years. After New Year, he will be involved in other projects. Rail news CMP forside Frontpage | Contact | Search | Links | Danish-Swedish dictionary Rail news New traffic on the rails A combi-terminal in Malm and a new Copenhagen- rhus link have increased rail traffic in the port CMP has hit the rails in recent months – quite literally! CMP in Malm opened a combi-terminal in June. One of its clients is the European train operator TX-Logistik AB. The terminal services the discount chain Lidl, which is expanding rapidly in Sweden. The goods arrive by interchangeable containers from Germany, arranged by the Nord shipping company. The trailers are then put on train carriages and driven to a distribution store in Eskildstuna, where trucks deliver the goods to Lidl stores. The trucks are operated by DFDS Transport. Lidl already has almost 100 shops in Sweden, a number expected to rise to 350 in the next few years. At the moment, goods are unloaded in Malm twice a week. The whole process consists of a collaboration between CMP's Container and Ro-Ro departments. The actual unloading is done by reach stackers with special combi-yokes. In Copenhagen too In July, a container service started between rhus and Copenhagen Freeport. At the moment, three trains run in each direction every week. The trains are full-length - 450 metres with 22 carriages. In fact, the Monday train is 900 metres but because of the state of the tracks, it has to be split in two before it rolls into the Freeport. The transports are arranged by Railion. In rhus, the container carriages are processed in the two container terminals serviced by APM and rhus Stevedore Kompagni. The new route is used for transport purposes by Maersk, MSC and others. Railion now only solely operates between the ports in Copenhagen and rhus and has closed its container terminals in the two cities. Routes with a future "The new Copenhagen- rhus link is already in full swing. The feedback suggests it has brought benefits to everybody involved in the project" CMP's container manager, Brian Kristensen, says. "In Malm , we are hoping that volume will grow, so we can offer the new service five days a week. We want to build up a combi-terminal that can be extended later on when we move to the North Harbour at some point," Kristensen explains. The plan is to concentrate the Nord ferries and the container terminal in the North Harbour, where there will also be easy access to railway tracks. The date for the move has not yet been set. Container Service CMP forside Frontpage | Contact | Search | Links | Danish-Swedish dictionary Container Service Service station for containers Condane sets up in Copenhagen as part of their Scandinavian growth strategy "We are here primarily because our container customers in rhus Port want us to be. But it is also part of our Nordic expansion strategy," says Per B ch Andersen, divisional Director of Condane, which maintains and services containers. He has spent the last six months commuting between rhus and Copenhagen to set up the company. Since August, it has been operating out of Kattegatvej - on the far edge of the North Harbour and with a view of Sweden. "We are highly satisfied with the tremendous support received from CMP and the Port of Copenhagen during the start-up phase. It has been a very positive experience," says the Director who only has a handful of staff in his new department so far. Part of the transport chain The new container unit will work in line with Condane's other three departments in Denmark and the one in Gothenburg. "It is, first and foremost, a question of service – and of understanding the customer's business. When the driver comes to collect the containers, they have to be ready, of course. It is incredibly important that we provide the quality customers expect," Per B ch Andersen (43) says. He used to be a machine engineer, spent 17 years as a major in the Engineering Corps and seven years in the IT industry before he assumed the manager's role at Condane two years ago. He also thinks that the trend in the industry is clearly towards fewer but bigger customers. Refrigerated containers are examined and repaired, e.g. if they are to be used to transport medicine, and millions are at stake if the cooling system fails. Containers are cleaned and any damage repaired. Less attention will be paid to traditional storage of empty containers, however. "We expect the greatest possible throughput of containers," says Per B ch Andersen, who says that the main priorities in the container industry are service and trust but that small price margins also play a very important role. Script for growth Per B ch Andersen has drawn up a detailed script for the setting up the business in Copenhagen - and nothing has been left to chance. Condane wants to be involved wherever the largest number of containers are being processed in Scandinavia. Oslo and Helsingborg are other potential sites for new facilities but the company also has the Baltic Sea in its sights. "This is the first of several new start-ups – we want to be directly represented in more localities. Our customers want our familiar service at a greater range of localities," he concludes. Ambitious growth plans CMP forside Frontpage | Contact | Search | Links | Danish-Swedish dictionary Ambitious growth plans Ambitious growth plans The CMP business plan for the next five years aims to increase profits by 50%. Opportunities for growth and expansion in the Baltic Sea Region are to be studied. 2005 will be a good year for CMP. According to its five-year plan, the Port will make a profit of at least SEK 40 million this year. This will represent the fifth straight year of improved turnover and profits. A new business plan for the next five years expects continued progress and has set a target of an annual turnover of at least SEK 800 million and a profit of at least SEK 60 million, corresponding to growth of 50%. Lars Karlsson considers the financial result far more important than the turnover in terms of volume: "Not to put too fine a point on it, I would prefer to increase turnover by a single new car rather than by a pallet of general cargo. Processing 10,000 cars will do more for our bottom line that 10.000 pallets of general cargo," says the Port Director. He is baffled by colleagues who still focus more on volume than on profit margin. It corresponds to a major cleaning company bothering about how many rooms or mirrors it cleans per annum. No more easy profits Revenue per member of staff has increased year after year. Rationalisation was also a major component of the first five-year business plan. In particular, a number of traditional warehouse and general cargo activities have disappeared. Some high-volume customers still remain, though. "Obviously, the point was to get rid of activities that were clearly bad business. Of course, the potential for that type of rapid rationalisation is far more limited now than it was when CMP was launched five years ago," he says. In the next few years, the car business, which has gone through a stormy growth period, will be optimised with attention focused on the financial results. "We will also pay particular attention to the Container Terminal. Volume has increased significantly, so our resources are utilised better but the overall profit level is unsatisfactory. This will be turned around by investments in new equipment and partnerships with our customers. All of our business areas are expected to make a positive contribution to the overall result during the coming five-year plan." "It also has to be borne in mind that the owners might want to use the container space for other purposes if it isn't making a positive contribution to overall profit," says Lars Karlsson, hinting at the Port of Copenhagen's interest in building offices and homes on the waterfront. Growth opportunities Lars Karlsson bases his belief in continued growth on a number of facts. The cruise ship business continues to break record after record. CMP is now an established Scandinavian hub for new cars. The major Toyota terminal is expanding its activities. Two customers are opening new car terminals. Negotiations with new car importers about setting up in the port are ongoing. Transit oil is one area of business with major growth potential. The routes to Germany are increasing their capacity. "Within the next couple of years, it will be possible to open a new route to and from the port. We are working hard to accomplish that," says Lars Karlsson, who refuses to go into details. Need for investment CMP's desire to keep on growing presupposes new infrastructure investments. The approach to the oil port in Malm needs to be improved so that bigger and broader ships are able to enter and so that the dependence on wind direction and currents can be reduced. More cruise ships means more quays will be needed. CMP is set to lose quay space to urban regeneration projects in Copenhagen. "Without new quays, there will be a lack of capacity and a subsequent risk of some shipping companies choosing other harbours as their homeports. It is a fiercely competitive market. But I think that the Danish harbour owners really do understand the necessity of extra quay capacity. We are approaching a point in time when we will be able to finalise the funding and the timetable for an extension. " Lars Karlsson expects agreement with the Port of Copenhagen by the end of the year about leasing new bulk areas at Pr vestenen on Amager. On the Swedish side, he also expects an agreement with Malm City Council by the end of the year about the relocation of the container terminal and traffic to and from Germany. The move will make it possible to build a big new logistics centre in the North Harbour. Acquisitions and partnerships Lars Karlsson is aware that the ambitious targets cannot be reached by means of organic growth alone. Other options include buying new facilities, buying other ports or stakes in them, etc. He cites the example of the Port of Gothenburg's involvement in G vle and the prospect of new operators at the Oslo container terminal. "Our eyes are on the Baltic in the first instance. It would, for example, be interesting for us to operate terminal activities for one of our existing customers from another location – e.g. in the Baltic States." "CMP is now so well consolidated and self-sustaining that we can now contemplate taking on projects of that type. But the purpose is to create profitable business – not to increase turnover for the sake of it." "New customers would also help us reach our targets – the Toyota agreement was a wonderful example of that. It will not be difficult to achieve our growth target is we attract new customers," he adds CMP 360o december 2005 CMP forside Frontpage | Contact | Search | Links | Danish-Swedish dictionary CMP 360o december 2005 Cruise ship award CMP's cruise-ship staff are over-excited. The port has been awarded the title "The World's Leading Cruise Ferry Port 2005", and the city of Copenhagen has been awarded the title "Europe's Leading Cruise Ship Destination". At last year's World Travel Awards, the port was named "Europe's Leading Cruise Ship Port". CMP's cruise manager Per Schmidt accepted the accolade at an event in London on 13 November. The award of two of the travel industry's Oscars was justified by the fact that the city and port both work extremely well - separately and together. Moving to new HQ CMP is ready to move to its new HQ – newly-built offices in Copenhagen Freeport. On Monday 9 January 2006, CMP will be up and running from Containervej 9, P.O. Box 900, DK-2100 Copenhagen . All telephone numbers and e-mail addresses will remain unchanged. Shipping companies in new surroundings Unifeeder and Clipper have moved into new headquarters designed by the popular Danish architect Kim Utzon – son of the famous J rn Utzon, who designed the Sydney Opera House. An old crane, which Unionkul operated until the new building was finished, has been preserved and renovated in front of the beautiful new headquarters. Christmas ship at Langelinie The 2005 cruise ship season will not draw to a close until Saturday 10 December, when P&O's Aurora docks at Langelinie in Copenhagen at 08:00 with 1,800 people on board from England, who have signed on in Southampton and will arrive in Copenhagen via Amsterdam and Oslo. The ship will set sail for home again the next day at 18:00. CMP and the agent, Maersk Broker, hope to attract more Christmas cruises to the port in the future. One of the attractions for the passengers will be the Tivoli Christmas Market. Stable cargo turnover More cars, cruise ships and containers but smaller volumes of coal - seems set to be the pattern for 2005. Total turnover in terms of volume will be more or less the same as in 2004, i.e. approx. 15 million tons. The number of new cars processed is growing rapidly and is expected to hit 350,000 this year. 2005 will also be another record year with 283 cruise ships. Due to refurbishment, Amagerv rket in Copenhagen has consumed a significantly smaller volume of coal than last year, and the increase in oil volumes has not been able to make up for the shortfall. Stena grows in Denmark Swedish-owned Stena Jern og Metal continues its growth in the Danish market for scrap iron. I ts most recent acquisition is Roskilde Jernv rk and its 35 employees. Its main business consists of buying, processing and selling iron and metal for recycling purposes. Cruise ship network A new cruise-ship network is taking shape in Malm with CMP's cruise manager Per Schmidt as its first chairperson. Per already chairs Cruise Copenhagen Network. Cruise Malm Network held its inaugural meeting in November and has 14 members in the South of Sweden. The Malm Tourist Board acts as secretariat for the new organisation, which hopes to attract at least 20 cruise ships per annum in the next five years. There are several terminals at CMP, each having its own advantages and special capabilities. Port of Copenhagen (Denmark) - CMP - Copenhagen Malmo Port AB
