Maersk Sealand began regular service to Venezuela on February 16, 1994 with the call of the Maersk Lima at La Guaira and Puerto Cabello. The original frequency was semi-weekly and shuttled between Venezuela and South Florida. By Maersk's fourth year in Venezuela, calls at Maracaibo and Guanta were added to La Guaira and Puerto Cabello. Current services are Venezuela Service, Vengulf, East Coast South America (ECSA), French Antilles/Europe Service and North Coast Express (NCX), North Coast South America II (NCSAII) . During 1999 Venezuela averaged one port call per day and we still keep this record. During year 2000 the Europe service started on a weekly basis. This same year the North Coast Express Service (NCX) started calling Guanta twice a month. The NCX was upgraded in year 2002 to a weekly service, allowing export cargo from Guanta have direct connection to Europe and other principal ports in the world. Maersk Venezuela S.A. has own offices in Caracas (headquarters) and Valencia and O.P.S.A. Operadora Portuaria S.A. in La Guaira and Puerto Cabello. Third party agents have been appointed in Maracaibo and Guanta. Trucking business was initiated in May 2002 and is now operated by join efforts of Caracas and Valencia offices by the intermodal service. A terminal company was opened during 2000, and it handles Maersk Sealand's and other lines operations in Puerto Cabello and La Guaira, but is expected to initiate operations in other ports for year 2003. Other services handled by O.P.S.A. are M&R (Maintenance and Repair) and pre-tripping activities for dry containers in Alcatraz Yard. Conacentro and La Guaira Terminal Services are Maersk associated container yards in Puerto Cabello and La Guaira respectively, this are fully modern and secure yards, that are ready to store dry and reefer containers. Total Maersk Sealand staff in Venezuela is 65 persons and about 182 persons in the afiliated companies, including fully trained bilingual professionals.
