In 1990, B&R was the prime contractor for AT&T in the shore end instalation and diving work for the first fiber optic submarine communications cable in the Dominican Republic. In 1994, the group provided all of the local engineering and logistics support services to Shaughnessy & Co. of Seattle, WA. for the transportation and installation of a Paceco container crane for SeaLand from Port Everglades Florida to Rio Haina, Dominican Republic. Also in 1994, the group was selected as the prime contractor for the installation of two large diameter seawater inlet pipelines for a 260-acre shrimp aquaculture project in Barahona, Dominican Republic. B&R is the managing partner of the startup dredging firm of Dragados del Caribe, S.A. (Back to index) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Technology B&R's office operations are highly automated, and the group's guiding philosophy is one of being able to interface its IT capabilities with those of any of its transportation partners. For instance, B&R's computer network is on-line 24 hours a day with several of its principals, through leased lines and a VSAT satellite dish on the roof of the building, and we have been able to successfully mix IBM mainframe, DEC and Apple hardware in our accounting, documentation, equipment control and MIS networks. The bulk of the companies? applications have been migrated from a mainframe environment to a client-server system running on an Oracle Database. As an example of B&R's leadership in this field, the group was instrumental in the formation of a highly successful container demurrage billing and collection agency in the Dominican Republic ( Despachos Portuarios, S.A.), which relies on a real-time data transmission and processing capability linking computer terminals at each of the port gates with a central office via high-speed modems, fiber optic cable, microwave relays and cellular backup. The project involved considerable software development, the requirements of which were determined in-house by B&R, and called for highly innovative engineering approaches that fully engaged the capabilities of both the local Verizon telecommunications subsidiary and the hardware supplier IBM. (Back to index) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Insurance & travel The group has a small, wholly-owned insurance brokerage firm, B&R Corredores de Seguros, S.A. and operates a full-service IATA travel agency, Viajes Corporativos B&R.
